That’s because back in colonial times they could intermarry with the natives and their kids would not be born slaves, Mind you at one point their was more Africans in Mexico than Meztizos, And the natives were still recovering from the diesases brought by Europeans, Had they chosen not to intermarry Mexico would have a solid black population.

@@BernieSanders-bn5dk That's cap many indigenous people survived because they fled to the mountains, canyons, and other isolated areas away from their cities. When a black slave led a resistance, the Spanish granted him freedom and those who lived in their new village free as well. During the resistance many of them would have died so the remaining ones would have to rely on the indigenous communities to help them survive. Just like Europeans did not know how to grow food in North America they relied on the natives to teach them, the same happened with these afro communities who would have relied on the neighboring indigenous communities to teach them how to grow corn and beans etc. Also there are 2 communities in Mexico that did not intermarry so they are full african but they are the minority compared to communities that did.

I felt so "othered" my boyfriend who was Mexican had to threaten a few people for the way they were acting towards me. @@1fault Mexico has a lot of white people. And it all depends on where you live as to whether you'll get the strange looks. It's the same as small town America. These people in small towns anywhere can be very tribalistic. I fit in perfectly in Puerto Vallarta where I live for several months. I don't like that many whites own everything there. But going to a small, depending on where it is, you might have a different experience. I love Mexico. It's a big country made up of many states and it definitely can't be painted with a broad brush. Each state, city, are different. When I stayed in Guanajuato, many weren't mean or gave me weird looks, they just weren't as friendly. I loved Guadalajara when I went for a summer study abroad program in 1993. I lived with a Mexican lady--it was there where I was lavished with so much attention from older women and Mexican men. I've never been kissed so much. They were enamored with my black skin. And the guys came on to me more than the other white girls I went with. And they made it known to me that all the guys liked me. But it was like I was a purple bird amongst all yellow birds. I was different they are used to seeing Mexican women and white women, but not black women. It was an amazing experience. I want to go to Oaxaca next.

It's not because of colorism. In Mexico and most Latin American countries everyone is mixed. In the same families you will have black, brown, and white. The racism that existed in the US didn't exist in Mexico and Central America. Every Latino has DNA of all three groups European, Black and Native American. In Mexico the genetic contribution is higher on the Native American side, lower on on the European and even lower on the African. In contrast, in the Dominican republic the genetic contribution is higher on the African, lower on the European and even lower on the Native American. Then in Argentina is higher on the European, lower on the Indian and even lower on the African. Depending on the overall genetic makeup of the population that determines how the people look. In Mexico people look like Native American, in Dominican Republic they look Black and white in Argentina. But they all have all 3 racial makeup. You also need to remember that Mexico has over 120 million people, 1 million having African roots is still a pretty low number and the part is they are not all concentrated in specific regions with some very few exceptions that's because people were not segregated from each other. Blacks mixed. They took Indian partners and sometimes white European Spanish. In my family we have all colors and mixes. We don't defined ourselves by the American or European standard on race which is very foolish when you tried to apply it to a society that wasn't segregated or kept oppressed like they did in the United States.

My family looks like the United Nations as well with various hues of skin, body types, and mostly wavy hair textures and globally it doesn't matter whether one defines themselves by the American or European standard since race was and still is a social construct. Slavery, eugenic practices, those who procreated with other groups willingly or unwillingly, those who "passed" as the majority, as well as physical displacement will continue to be the manner in which the determining factor in how a person "sees" or places value on another. Having family, friends, and colleagues from various ethnic backgrounds and cultures etc; the one constant be it locally or globally is the skin currency that lighter skin has afforded others and it's relation to beauty, desirability, value, and whether or not you're perceived as a threat. Be that as it may, there's NOTHING foolish about applying it since generations upon generations of people were under social hygiene laws, mainstream perceptions of beauty and cleanliness, in addition to who was labeled as the working class on a global scale whether one was segregated or not or what their native tongue was. There's a horrible caste system in India based on skintone where one is considered "dusky" or a "darkie" if the skin is more tan since that denotes that you work outside and you don't have the preferred more milky complexion of Aishwarya Rai. Alot of Latinos who were never endlaved don't claim the African diaspora in their mix although we know it exists and lighter skin is favored in Asian culture as well. I've had the extensive conversations regarding racial identity etc with these individuals so I didn't pull it out of the air and getting it straight from the horse's mouth holds more weight and value than perception since it's often not the reality. Regardless of origin, disparaging remarks are still made about the texture of people's hair, facial features, and origin and since I know what I and others have experienced coupled with the scholarly research, it's quite foolish to negate that colorism doesn't exist everwhere because it's very much alive and well. While it's ideal and healthy for us to define ourselves, others do so quite negatively which is most unfortunate.

Nice video, this is the first time I have seen this tiny part of Black Mexico along the gulf coast. I live in the heart of Black Mexico in the Costa Chica de Guerrero, municipio de Cuajinicuilapa, along the pacific coast, and it is so interesting to see the similarities between the Black communities on either coast. However, the one difference I do note, is that where I live in the Costa Chica, it is a little more primitive, more "wild west" and definitely more insecure. It shouldn’t have taken you 5 hours to go back to Veracruz especially if you were driving. Next time stay in Xalapa, the state capital and much closer to Coyolillo - a 40 minute ride. That was very interesting. There’s another town, Yanga, closer to Veracruz, which is famous because of the rebellion of blacks against the Spanish during colonial times. It’s now recognized as one of the first struggles for independence in Mexico’s history.

Ey you should check out my family's village in Los Guajes within the municipality of Juchitlan (state of jalisco) it's been modernized in recent years but low key has a ton of history like this that dates back multiple generations. i cant got into detail about it's history, but it's a fun place to be in all honesty. That or puerto vallarte but i heard it's tourist dominated now.

In my younger days, before the internet, I attended a Nation of Islam speech by Khalid Mohammed (he's since passed away). He spoke of all things pertaining to black people. At the end, he allowed questions. One question was , "Are there black people in all countries on earth?" He answered yes. They may not be identified as black, but locally they are known and discriminated against just the same. Also, I was friends with a dark skinned man from India. I ask him that very question. He told me to take a good look at him. Then tell him. I refused because I respected him too much to offend him. He told me he is black. There are lots of black people like him in India and they were discriminated against in India. He said a lot of darker skinned come to the states to get away from the discrimination, not just education and jobs. White Americans don't discriminate against them as being black. He said that's was their way of passing, but he wouldn't do it. I'm guessing a lot of people in the world who are black, and not from Africa, come to the US and become caucasian. I'm in LA, and I'm a black person from Louisiana. I see a lot of hispanic people who have black ancestry in them, and its recent.

Afro community in México is only 1.4 percent, it is a tiny community in a very large country of 130 million people! It's very possible that a lot of Mexican ppl don't know about this community. USA ppl with their racial paranoia, always has to look at things thru skin color, and turn things into an ugly racial thing! They are so pitiful!! Especially in Mexico, I am Mexican and part Black, my mother's side of the family's history is escaping African slaves came to Mexico to be free, the Mexican government and the Mexican people protected these human beings, the Mexican government gave them land and resources to sustain themselves. So there is the original indigenous human beings, the African descendants human beings there is also Irish influence, for example Canelo the boxer is of Irish descent, he does not say: " I'm Irish Mexican " he just says I'm MEXICAN! As my family of African descent say: " somos MEXICANOS " we got it like that! MEXXA Y QUE!!!!!!!

The largest slave trade of Africans were in mexico. A lot of black people and white people and especially Latinos have no knowledge of this. A few years ago Mexico allowed Mexicans to identify their African roots and the Mexican census. Thank you for doing this podcast.

No, it's not that he didn't want to speak about his African heritage. I was there and I met lots of Afro-Mexicans. They're just careful about opening up to any Gringo because they don't know what they're up to. But once they know that you're truly interested in their story they open up to you. Don't forget they're really being discriminated against in Mexico and it's now that some Mexicans are fighting for their rights in Mexico City. As of 2019 when I was there, in some of their communities they didn't even have in door plumbing let alone drinkable water. And I came back to the States with tons of projects in mind to go back and help as an African myself. Then, Coronavirus came and disrupted everything. So, my experience is that even if they cannot tell you anything about their African heritage, they will readily tell you of their African extraction. They do like Afro Iraki in the city of Basra in Iraq or the Afro Indians in tribal areas of India. So, if you're young and interested in their story, I will highly encourage to go research them yourself and then go to see Afro Peruvians and Ecuadorians in South America. I visited a town outside Lima Peru, it was as if I was back to Africa or your'e in downtown Baltimore or Oakland before gentrification or Harlem for that matter. Food for thought. Peace.
