MEXTRÓPOLI 2017 | Peter Zumthor

Se formó con ebanista, diseñador y arquitecto en la Kunstgewerbeschule de Basilea y en el Pratt Institute de Nueva York. Trabajó en el Departamento de Conservación de Monumentos del cantón suizo de Graubünden como consultor de construcción y planeación y analista de arquitectura de pueblos históricos, además de realizar restauraciones. Desde 1979 tiene su propio despacho en Haldenstein, Suiza en donde todavía trabaja junto a un pequeño staff de 15 personas.
Es profesor en la Accademia di Architettura dell'Università della Svizzera Italiana en Mendrisio, Suiza, y ha sido profesor invitado en diversas universidades de todo el mundo como University of Southern California Institute of Architecture, en la Technische Universität, Munich y en la Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, entre otras.
Entre sus obras más importantes destaca: cubrición del yacimiento arqueológico romano (Chur, Suizza, 1986), capilla de Sogn Benedetg (Sumvitg, Suiza, 1988), viviendas para jubilados (Chur-Masans, Suiza, 1993), termas (Vals, Suiza, 1996), Kunsthaus Bregenz (Bregenz, Austria, 1997), pabellón de Suiza en la Exposición Universal (Hannover, Alemania, 2000), centro de documentación `Topografía del terror’ piezas prefabricadas (Berlín, Alemania, 1997; proyecto interrumpido por el gobierno regional), Kunstmuseum Kolumba (Colonia, Alemania, 2007) y capilla Bruder Klaus (finca de Scheidtweiler, Mechernich, Alemania, 2007).
Su obra ha sido recogida en exposiciones, y numerosas publicaciones especializadas y en la monografía Peter Zumthor: Works, Buildings, and Projects 1979-1997 (Lars Müller, Baden, 1998). Ha recibido el Premio Pritzker de Arquitectura 2009 y la Royal Gold Medal de arquitectura 2013.

What a terrible question session from the two interviewers! No real connection between consecutive questions and general lack of understanding of Zumthor's body of work. Did they just skim read through the first few pages of 'Atmospheres'? "Can you tell us something about the architecture of your childhood?" Give me a break... I'm sure a lot of people would give up a kidney to get an opportunity to pick his brain, instead we get generic questions that have been addressed in every interview over the past two decades. Even Zumthor called them out on their unpreparedness.

Sometimes when dealing with a genius it is better to ask asinine questions that allow the guest's thoughts to wander and provide some insight into their thinking and process. The person who shows up thinking they have just the right question at just the right intellect is frequently the fool. They were provided access to the gentleman by some higher power than themselves (there is a director). I am sure there was some understanding of what the discourse would be like. Realize that in the back of the audience there is some woman who is concerned that the architect will take away the iced tea she likes to purchase while taking advantage of her museum membership on one of her days off.
