Great news, Keith! Hope you love them as much as I do. You'll hear some people say they're not worth the money, but the beauty of the Empys is overlooked by people measuring sound quality by perceived (in-your-face) detail I think. Their ability to provide all the details, but in such as organic and relaxed (not thick or sloppy) way is constantly enjoyable for me.

Thanks for a great review. I also have the Empyrean and it is my favorite headphone. I mainly listen to classical, opera, and jazz, but far prefer the leather pads. I really don't like the sound of the velour pads at all. A worthwhile upgrade is the Meze copper upgrade cable for the Empyrean. They also have a silver coated cable, but it sounds too bright to me. I once auditioned a Focal Clear at a local shop, but found the treble harsh and fatiguing. The only Focal I like is the Stellia, which I also own. The Stellia is closed-back, and almost neutral with just a bit of extra treble. My second favorite headphone is the Dan Clark Ether 2, which is perhaps even more neutral than the Empyrean, and costs $1,000 less. Often, I prefer the Ether 2 depending on the music. For those who would like to own the Empyrean, but can't afford the price, the Ether 2 is a less costly alternative.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Robert - they're very helpful. I've looked at the Meze upgrade cables and wondered how they might sound. The Clear definitely can sound a bit edgy depending on the source you're feeding it with. I'm yet to try the Ether 2 in a suitable (non-expo) environment, but your description has me very interested.

I have my Stellia's on eBay since I bought the Empyrean's and I'll not be going back. I found the Stellia's a bit too trebly for me, although I can EQ that out in Roon and they are technically excellent headphones. Very good with the type of music you mention - especially vocals - and very comfortable too. I am considering the Copper Upgrade Cables rather than the Silver for the Empyrean as I am also concerned the silver might be a bit bright. Your comment may have saved me a few hundred £ so thanks :)

@@PassionforSound From what I've read the Arya were actually originally supposed to be a collaboration with Drop (formerly Massdrop), they were going to be called the HE1000x (there's even pictures out there of the HE1000x that look just like the Arya). But it comes down to is they're similar to the HE1000 line but in cheaper clothing, but people that have actually tried both prefer the Arya. Sure it's plastic instead of metal and wood but that makes it lighter, that and the headband is softer and conforms to your head better (thus better weight distribution). So comfort wise and price/performance wise the Arya hit a sweet spot.

I'm very curious about the Empyreans but the price and the fact that you like the NightHawks and the NightOwl Carbons is somewhat of a red flag. Try as I might the NightHawks/NightOwl Carbons didn't do it for me. I burned them in for the recommended 150 hours but I found that did little, if any, to change the sound signature. As I recall Metal571 pointed out their tuning was way off with too much emphasis in the upper bass and lower mids. That's what I thought too but of course that's subjective. As you have pointed out; we all hear and listen to music differently. Regardless I think you are one of the best reviewers on KZbin.

The Empyreans and NightOwls/Hawks are vastly different, even though I enjoy both. Hi Lachlan, just wondering what your thoughts on the Empyrean's layering and stage? GoldenSound brings up lack of layering and issues with drum impact and acoustic music in general. I'm considering them, but I'm not in a location where I can demo them so any thoughts you may have are appreciated. For reference, "Meze Empyrean Review - The most beautiful headphone you probably shouldn't buy" GoldenSound.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Hi Heath, I watched that a while back and don't completely agree with him. The Empyreans aren't the perfect headphone technically, but they're very, very good. It felt to me like Golden had a preset idea about the Empys before the review because he mentions other headphones that do better, but never actually says what those headphones are. The Empys have a bass-lifted response that's fairly flat from about 200Hz. That means they'll provide excellent weight and presence in the bass at all frequencies. If you compare them to a headphone like the Utopia, the Utopia has a mid bass bump and then rolls off down low. That makes them sound punchy on drums, but the drums also lack substance and weight due to the bass roll-off. Personally, I find that the Empyreans sound better on drums than headphones like the Utopia that use a mid bass boost for punch. As for layering, the Empys aren't class leading, but they are exceptional as a headphone in general. If you compare to the Susvara, they can't match them, but they're better than anything else I've heard in lower price brackets. I've heard almost every major brand's top end headphones, including now the Meze Elite and the Empyreans still remain one of my favourite all around headphones. Only the Elite has bested them for me as a headphone that can be enjoyable and engaging while also providing great imaging, soundstage, detail retrieval (more mid than treble-focussed) and tonal accuracy. If I had to pick a weak spot, it would actually be tonal accuracy in the mid-bass where the bass shelf is a little too close to the midrange and can slightly over thicken the mids, but it's very minor and only noticeable with direct comparisons

Hi, I bought the Empyreans second hand, and I was warned it had less detail than say the Stax L700, others answered: you must hear it with a silver cable please. So before I received the cans with stock cable I ordered the Lavricables Grand Litz. I listened to the stock cable some days before the Grand was in the mail. With the stock cable I used the leather pads as they are called more analytical, but with the silver cable I use the velvet pads, since it doesn’t lack any detail, and why choose analytical when you can have sheer beauty? I was warned the Grand is like an Audeze Lcd-4: too heavy, but that is the photo, it is not too heavy. So I will be still a bit careful with delicate silver. My Stax L700 cable has a lot of silver in it. High end music listening seems not possible without the benefits of silver. Thanks Yoram
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yoram, I actually have found things a bit different to what you've been told about the pads. The leather create a richer, warmer sound while the velour bring the upper mids out a bit more which, to me, equates to a little more perception of detail/transparency. To me, where the Empyreans shine is their layering of detail. They don't push anything in your face, but if you want to listen analytically, there is a lot of detail and info you can hear that's just sitting there for you if you want it. I love mine with a copper litz cable. I've found silver cables to be too much sometimes so I haven't gone down that path with the Empys and found the copper litz a notable step up from the stock cable. I might have to try a silver cable on them one day though...

Thank you for taking the time to review this headphone. I particularly appreciate the comparison to the Focal Clear. This is my current headphone, which I really enjoy, but have been thinking about upgrading for one main reason: Jaw Pain. The clamping force on the Focal Clears causes quite a bit of pain in my jaw after 7+ hours of daily use. I work as a therapist, seeing clients online, and the open back headphones help me to hear my voice while I talk to my clients. With the Clears, the combo of the clamping force with talking all day gives me quite a bit of pain in that jaw area. Do you by chance know how these headphones perform in very long listening sessions, particularly while communicating with others?

Hi Trillium, my pleasure. I do think the Empyreans are better for overall comfort than the Clears, but it's such a personal thing that I don't know how they'll go for you specifically. Can I suggest a cheap headphone for calls with clients and keep the Clears for listening? The HD560S might be a good option if you're able to work with two different headphones. They sit off the jawbone a little for me so any pressure is higher up on the head, but they don't clamp much.

Hi, thank you for the review, what a good timing - you may remember from my previous comments that I had the NightHawks and the T1s 2nd gen and was looking for something "next level" which would sound less artificial than the T1s. I got the Focal Clears and was happy for a while, but to be honest, I find myself listening to them less and less which makes me question all the money I spent on them. They are, I'm sure, technically the best headphones I've ever heard, but they are getting kind of... boring. I find myself analysing music through them (listening with my brain) as opposed to feeling it which is the case with the NightHawks (listening with my heart). The NightHawks make me feel like I'm embraced by the music, it's so personal, so visceral, almost physical. The Clears (perhaps due to being fully open) sort of play the sound close to my ears as opposed to inside me (some people would prefer it this way, I like to feel the music inside me). However, as you rightly pointed out in one of your videos, one can have the Clears for experiencing the clarity of music, and the NightHawks as the the pair of headphones which brings more joy. But even then, what stops me from being satisfied is: 1. Narrow sound stage - it's just straight in my face, it gets boring and irritating after a while, stops me from getting sucked into the music as it feels a little artificial. I would like to feel like there's no limit to where the sound goes and where the instruments are placed around me. 2. Boring treble - yes, easy to listen to, but somehow unengaging. I could not continue listening to the T1s after I'd heard the Clears (the tonality and sibilance...), but their treble would sometimes send shivers down my spine. 3. Lack of sub-bass. The Clears can be quite punchy in certain songs, but the lack of sub-bass presence makes some songs sound quite hollow, too analytical and too dry, I find myself skipping songs as they're just not "meaty" enough to put a smile on my face. It's quite ironic how I initially loved the Clears for the lack of colouration and "weirdness" that the NightHawks offer, but with time I found that due to the above reasons I am not fully satisfied with them. But something with a bigger (and deeper) soundstage and proper bass presence could hopefully finally give me what I've been looking for... Do you think that these Meze headphones could be my holy grail? I would only consider spending that amount of money on a pair of headphones if it was something truly special, an addictive experience, not just an analytical tool. I have also heard a lot of good things about the HEDDphones - have you had a chance to listen to them?
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michal, I haven't heard the HEDDphones, but I've read some mixed reports about their comfort and that's a real problem if you want to lose yourself in the music because, ideally, you want to forget your wearing headphones. I personally think the Empyreans are outstanding because they are so technically strong, but only if you actually listen for it. They're kind of opposite to a Clear or HD800 where the Clears, etc. draw your attention to the technicalities, the Emperyeans let you immerse yourself in the music and it's only if you listen critically that you realise how good they actually are. In fact, I've had a few occasions where I doubted that they were THAT special so I've compared them with the Clears and gone "oh yeah, that's right, they're miles ahead" but I'd forgotten because they're so much about the musical experience. Based on your tastes, I think you'd love them. Which country are you in?
@MistaLova-Lova4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSoundThank you for your reply. Hm, the fact that you sometimes doubted if they were in fact so special is a little concerning to me, because that's how I decided on keeping the Clears - their tonality sounded so much better than everything else I had at the time. So, in direct comparison, they sounded like everything I could ask for, but on their own, after a while, I'm missing the things I've mentioned above. The vision of spending a crazy amount of money on the Emperyeans and then possibly "doubting if they're so special"... I would only consider such a purchase if every time I put them on I went "DAMN!" :) I live in Scotland, perhaps I've not done enough research but I don't think there's a place nearby where I could audition different audiophile headphones (especially now with the COVID restrictions...).
@MistaLova-Lova4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't what I wrote is very clear - what I meant was that I also doubted if the Clears were in fact so special, but then their clarity and tonality always surprised me when compared directly to the other pairs of headphones I had access to at the time. It is also important to mention that I do not have superexpensive DACs and amps, I get my music from FLAC files on Tidal and have an Asus Xonar Essence STX II sound card with very powerful amps on it (never had to use the highest setting, even on 600ohm T1s) , but surely it won't be as good as audiophile DACs and amps. Taking this into consideration, perhaps there's no point in me looking for anything better than the Clears with this set-up. What do you think?
@MistaLova-Lova4 жыл бұрын
*I don't think (just cannot spell today...)

Hi Michal, firstly, the Empyreans are definitely a "Damn!" extracting headphone, but they also happen to be very easy to listen to so apologies if I made it sound otherwise. I think we'll grow accustomed to any headphone given time so what you're describing is very normal. Now that I know your setup, I'd say to invest in some better source chain gear first (i.e. amp/DAC). You'll be amazed how much better the Clears can sound and also smoother too. Have you got a budget available? How much could you comfortably invest into an amp (and what currency e.g. USD, AUD, etc.)?

Today, I went to the mall to get my iPad Pro checked and went into Stereo, a local shop that sells headphones, IEMs, DACs and amps etc. I tried the Empryean with IFI Diablo and it sounds great, the best I’ve heard so far. Would have love to hook it with their IFI Pro DSD but my wheelchair can’t access there. By best, I am comparing this with the Clear MG and Arya Stealth Magnet. Would have used the monies to buy this instead as the Clear MG is sounding a little too bright and is heavy for my broken neck.

Hi Gavin, a headphone like this needs a top quality source to really shine. Buying them to use without a proper headphone amp is like buying a Ferrari to drive to the local shops. It will work, but you'll never enjoy what it's capable of. So, to answer your question, the difference is huge when using these with a good DAC and amp versus an output from a phone, computer or even most hifi receivers where there's a headphone output thrown in as a convenience.

Best video to date describing the Empyrean outstanding job.. I have many headphones Utopia, Z1R, HD 800 and the Empyrean and with the Empyrean you get great impact, perfect soundstage and detail retrieval. I like that you can play them very loud and you do not lose anything by doing so everything is still there with NO FATIGUE at all for instant a song from System of the Down "Chop Suey" no problem crank it up and for the first time you can hear the detail of the song without any fatigue. And I think the number one best feature from the Empyrean is that it can play all music genres very well and even poorly recorded 80's stuff if I tried with the Utopia's my ears would bleed. instagram.com/p/B72RfTXJ9M0/

Hi Paul, glad you liked it! 🙂 The Empyreans provide an excellent soundstage. It's not huge, but very well described and with good instrument separation. The Clear is slightly larger, but less focussed and probably less layered. The HD800S is obviously much bigger and at least on par for focus, but at the expense of any soul/realism in tone. I haven't yet tried the Auteur, but the other headphone I can mention is the Utopia which is very similar in staging to the Empyrean with perhaps a touch more focus due to its insane detail retrieval.

@AstroFantastica4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound It is rather expensive I agree, but I got a good deal on it (second hand). They do change the sound signature noticably, which was surprising because up until the Empyreans I never really saw the value in different cables. The silvers make them sound a lot faster, and shifts the tonality slightly into the upper mids. It's for sure a more analytical sound at the cost of some slam in the sub-bass (though by no means are they bass light). I find it a lot more pleasing for female vocal and classical due it their more open nature. EDM is more fun on copper though :) Hope that helps. Hi there I am thinking of purchasing the dcs Bartok headphone amplifier for these empyrean headphones, with a view to integrating this into my system as a 1 box solution eventually after using it purely as a headphone amplifier, thinking it will be the best way to listen to the Bartok given that speakers can run into 10s of thousands of dollars to get the best result. Are the Empyreans a good match for the DCS Bartok?
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi fizywig, I haven't tried the Bartok, but I would expect it to do a good job given its price and implied level of performance. The Empyreans scale incredibly well so you may find an external HP amp fed from the Bartok can take the system even further, but starting with the Bartok should be great. I think it's false economy to spend that much on a headphone, but cut costs on your amp and DAC. If you plan to upgrade your sources at some point then go for it, but otherwise it's kind of like buying a Ferrari to just drive up to the local grocery store. If I had that budget, I'd probably buy a pair of Focal Clears, Beyer T5 3rd gen or similar and then a Schiit Bifrost 2 and a Burson Soloist. I think it would sound noticeably better than the Empys with the Modi/Heresy combo, but that's just me. If you decide to go ahead you'll have a truly brilliant headphone that will sound better than most other gear around even if it's only running at 80% of its max performance

Hi William, I think a couple of things might have been going on for you to experience them that way. Firstly, the Alcantara pads sound quite different from the leather pads and I think the leather pads are where the magic happens. Secondly, the Empys are like other top tier headphones in the sense that the source you use will dictate their performance and they'll only show their true potential on a high end system. Finally, they're not a headphone designed for wow factor so much as lifelike reproduction of sound. They don't do things like throw a massive soundstage or have any significant peaks or troughs in the frequency response to make them sound exciting. What they do really well though is provide a coherent, detailed and realistic reproduction of the music in a slightly warm and engaging way. It's something that I think is appreciated over time more than in a short demo and will depend a lot on what you're used to and what you're expecting. Of course, they also might not be to your tastes and that's fine too. 🙂

Thanks for sharing about the ATs - I'll have to see if I can try a pair. Back in the days that I also used speakers, I always preferred cloth tweeters to metal tweeters despite that theory.

Have you tried them before complaining?I'm not saying ADX00 are bad but comparing with Meze is a joke! When you buy Meze you are expecting a whole package in the price: high quality, top sound, inovation etc. I'm sick paying for plastic and same old design. For me Meze are the end of the road. Looking foward to see their next project! Peace!

I agree about the Empyreans being end of the road. They are about as perfect a headphone as I can imagine.

@@PassionforSound Thoughts on empy vs arya and susvara?
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I haven't yet tried the Arya or Susvara, but I'd expect the Empys to be comfortably better than the Arya based on what I've read. Not sure about the Susvara.

Thanks Smood! I've got a bunch coming up (in no particular order): Grado RS1e, HD800S, Monolith 1060 V2, Koss PortaPro, HE4XX, AKG K712

Bloated mess, expensive as fuck. If you want bad sound, just take relatively neutral 50 dollar headphones and EQ them like Meze Empyreans.

Price is still the factor. Not worth it

That's always going to be a personal and subjective call which everyone had the right to make for themselves 🙂
