This game is great, not as just a rouge-like, but also it’s one of the best WIZARD themed games out there. When you think about it, there’s not that many wizard themed games so Wizard of Legend really scratches that itch for me.

It's a little and far from perfect game but "Spellcaster University" is really nice to play if you like wizards (magic school managing, with a card system to randomize a bit each game)
@NightmareBlade10 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I agree. I really like how they handle the player using magic as a basic attack. In most RPGs they'll have you sitting in place while channeling a fireball or a bunch of random projectiles that function near identically to each other. In this game you actually get to actually "use" the magic without being bound by an abritrary mana system and casting "spells". It's almost like you're actually manipulating the elements like the guy said.

I used to be so obsessed with this game some time ago and even when i don't play it that much anymore i still feel so attached to it that it's painful. I know that it's made by two people and they are probably doing other things by now since i don't see any news from them on social media anymore, but i really wish that one day they'll make another game that shows us more of the world and it's lore. By the way it's sad you haven't mentioned the dev commentary mode that you can select when you are changing language. I would love to see them create a sequel to this game that’s an RPG or ARPG. After playing a ton I’ve found it doesn’t really scratch that “rogue-like itch” as different runs don’t feel substantially different. The combat, spells, and animations are way too fantastic not to be utilized in an adventure game. I could see the wizarding world being expanded as well.

I still do like the rogue like aspect, but really the biggest thing for me was finding and unlocking new abilities and trying new builds. The sheer amount of spells left you with a ton of shit to try. Wish I could just give these guys a bunch of money and just ask em to keep updating it! Haven’t played anything like it yet.

My favourite thing about the aggressive playstyle design in wol is the fact that the signature spell is a use it or lose it kind of thing. Where once it's charged, the bar continues to drop until you either use it, or you lose it. Making it so that you end up using your super cool finishing move most of the time, or get punished by losing it instead :P

I am sold on it's concept revolving around Avatar alone honestly. At some point it would be cool to see it finalized with maybe an element referred to as Order. Which would effectively be light. Got this game not too long ago and have beaten normal mode once and the boss rush once, and it's definitely one of my favorite roguelikes that I've played. Been looking for an actual wizard game for some time, but most seem like they're very slow or just have the same spell with a different element (limited in what I can play though, only have an Xbox), so the fact that this game has quick combat _and_ varying spells is amazing. Had so much fun playing and I will ideally collect all Chaos arcana sometime soon. Also, can we talk about just how epic Sura's boss theme is? Definitely portrays the power he has, I feel. Mostly just wanted to rant about the game, it's very fun. Also, I may be several months late, but fantastic video. Really didn't expect a single person to have so many videos covering many of my favorite games, but I guess there always is a chance for anything.

This video is great and I've been looking for a game like this for a while, I need to write this down somewhere so I can get the game when I have time Also if you like vr then Rumble is probably the best earthbending game in existence. The barrier to entry is high due to how precise you need to be to execute any move in the game (rotation and position if your hands are important and the game does NOT compromise) but its very satisfying to improve at and it will make you feel like YOU are an earthbender, not that your character is. I highly recommend it if you're willing to push through the barrier to entry

Honestly, when I played this game for the first time, I wasn't really sold on it. While I liked the fact that you had legitimate starting spells and I liked how good the combat felt I wasn't really sold on the game. That is, until I fought a major boss for the first time. A lot of roguelike bosses have attacks that are either functionally threatening but don't feel all that threatening or feel threatening without having a legitimate threat behind it. For example, Slime Boss's Slime Crush and The Guardian's Hyper Beam feel very threatening in Slay the Spire because they deal a lot of damage, but it's usually possible to deal enough damage to them such that they don't get to use those moves. On the flipside, The Concierge and Conjunctivius in Dead Cells never feel all that threatening because it's so easy to kite The Concierge with a range weapon and/or gadgets with ranged attacks and it's so easy to dodge Conjunctivius' attacks when he doesn't have his tentacles out, but they are very threatening because they can deal a lot of damage if they get the right hit(s) in. In Wizard of Legend, the bosses both felt threatening and were functionally threatening. There are, of course, some other roguelikes that did this well too (Darkest Dungeon and Rogue Legacy come to mind), but what also made Wizard of Legend's bosses special is that they felt like they were far too powerful. The bosses keep using massive attacks that are hard to dodge but also make the bosses look super cool while doing them. But it's also not just that: they taunt you mid-fight, which gives you an opening to fight back and get your combos on. I feel like Wizard of Legend has my favorite collection of bosses in any roguelike, and I haven't even fought the final boss yet (I skipped over that point in your video so I didn't spoil it for myself), and I feel like the bosses really pushed the game into being one of my favorite roguelikes, so I'm mildly upset that you didn't talk about them at all. Also, the game technically has mana. It's just that you build it up over time and use it to cast the enhanced version of your signature spell.

I have indeed played wizard of legend. I liked the stone fist ability, I used it a lot while calling myself "the punching wizard" a particular build I have been unable to replicate in any other game. This ends the only positive thing I have to say about this game. As you have stated, wizard of legend is a rouge-like. This is the game that taught me what that means, and more importantly, taught me how much I hate it as a concept. The randomly generated levels that become repetitive after only a few runs. The randomly generated loot that rarely helps you on your run. The fact that all progress will be reset after a mistake that usually isn't even your fault. I hate how they all look like they would be fun, tricking me into playing them. And worst of all, I hate myself for constantly falling for it. Now moving on to criticisms aimed at this game specifically. Not all, but some rouge-likes will reward the player with buffs that help you get even farther. This might include increased health, defense, base damage, or whatever else. Hades and its God mode does this really well, which is the only positive thing I have to say about THAT game. Wizard of legend does not do this, like at all. It's almost insulting. You are expected to progress through skill alone, which is hardly a fun experience. You can unlock new moves, relics, or cloaks, but they only replace what you have, you can't take anything more on top of this, and they rarely help. I know this because I almost exclusively use the dirt brown cloak that allegedly increases health and damage resistance, and I noticed no substantial increase in my survivability. As you said, this game promotes a very particular play style. You consider this a positive thing, I do not. If you won't or can't learn this play style, then you are out of luck. My personal play style as the punching wizard, involves aggressively charging enemies, occasionally tanking what most might call "avoidable damage" this is how I play not just this game, but almost every game where it applies. It is just to ingrained into my personality to change now. Pair this with the common rouge-like trope of having a weird, almost crippling fear of letting the player heal, and I rarely have enough health to clear the next encounter, let alone a boss fight. Also, this game is hard, unreasonably hard. You WILL get stun locked and there is nothing you can do about it. No, I do not consider high difficulty for the sake of it a good thing either. I have gotten far enough to at least see the first wizard boss, repeatedly in fact, but after seeing what I'm meant te deal with, I just gave up. Before anyone tries to tell me to "git good" know that I tried, I really did. But the game offers little reason for me to try. I don't find get stuck in a corner fun, just like I don't consider bashing my head against the wall fun. Lastly, there is a particular item I want to address, I forgot what it's called, but it removes knock back from your attacks. As someone who probably killed more enemies by pushing them off the edge than dealing damage to them, I consider this a cursed item with no pluss sides. Most spells will move the player, and when the player moves while the enemy doesn't, you move into the enemy's space, taking unavoidable contact damage. This item was poorly thought out and reflects negatively on the game as a whole.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Its true the game demands a certain play style. I am guessing balance can be hard if you open too many play styles. There are items that heal you and allowing too much could open up a build that is basically invulnerable. But you could say why not allow it so people can get to experience the game they paid for. A challenge mode vs easy mode is a good way of having both.

God I only just remembered about this game. Probably one of the greatest rogue likes that I have played.

Wizard of legend has amazingly satisfying combat and endless customizability with your move set. It’s got gorgeous pixel art graphics and fun co-op for local play or steam players with steam’s “online local” multiplayer functionality. The only sour spot is that the level design can be a bit bland, but the combat is so fun that it doesn’t really matter. Free updates improved the game even further, with a surprising recent update quite a long time after I expected the devs to move on completely. Easy 100+ hour game, pick it up!

5:00 Dale North. I wouldn't say his music is brilliant or genius, but he's very good at "reading the room"
