Degas was known in his lifetime for his inventiveness with materials. One critic in 1892 noted with excitement the unknown “secrets of the ‘recipe,’ the artful and exciting mix of materials for which Monsieur Degas has a penchant.” Explore Degas’s innovative pastel practice in portraits, landscapes, and ballet subjects with the curator of “French Pastels: Treasures from the Vault.”

Degas in his days already latched onto "digitizing" images for editing & experimentation, he would have loved photoshop for color variation, spatial placement, copy-and-paste, rotation, texture modification, etc. Nonetheless, without imagination & creativity, photoshop is still only just a tool. Degas's pastel paintings are out of this world, timeless, that's why he's a master. Thank you so much for this lecture, I have learned a great deal about Degas and his less known landscape.

Why do curators insist that pastels are sensitive to light? They are not, in fact they are hardier than most mediums. If anything, it is the paper they are on that is affected by the light. They need to make that distinction.

They really promote the idea of art as therapy, as moral uplift, as the work of geniuses. All three might be true, but not as true as they promote it.

Are you afraid to say “spiritual”? It’s not just a material object; he’s trying to portray the spiritual aspect perhaps not painting mouth nose lips etc. Just a thought, good video cheers
