This place is a 'must visit' because without it a visit to Gangtok is really incomplete. 'Marg' in Hindi means 'Road'. So MG Marg named as Mahatma Gandhi Road or MG Road.
The road is lined up with glittering shops, restaurants, cafes & bars on both sides. Many tourists take a table on a roadside restaurant and watch the activities on the street. It's like a carnival like atmosphere out here. The annual Gangtok Food and Culture Festival is held here at MG Marg in December. The first thing one notices when on this approximately 1 km stretch of road is the cleanliness. The entire area is free of litter, smoke and vehicle. It's a pedestrian only zone and vehicles are not allowed on this approximately 1km stretch of the road.
Shops in MG Marg are open from 8am to 7pm. The market here is closed on Tuesdays. At one end of MG Marg is the Sikkim Tourism Center. Further down towards Tibet road is the taxi stand where you get taxis for local sightseeing tours.
About midway is an imposing statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Other eye-catching additions are the Victorian lamps and various benches along the path. Gangtok's MG Road looks stunning after dark when the lights are lit making it a much-thronged place in this quaint hill town.
How To Reach MG Road, Gangtok?
The NE Taxi Service offers taxi services just like Uber and Ola and is a good option. However, the cab will drop you a little away from the main market as no vehicles are allowed on MG Road. Usually A taxi charges from Taxi stand to MG Marg 150 Rupees.
How to Reach Gangtok?
The nearest Airport to Gangtok is in Bagdogra and one can hail a cab or taxi from there to Gangtok. The nearest railway station from Gangtok is in Siliguri, which is directly connected to the major cities of the country Like Howrah Railway Station Kolkata, West Bengal. Taxi and bus services are available from Siliguri to Gangtok.
By Air it takes 1 Hour 15 Minutes (Nonstop) from Kolkata, West Bengal. By Train it takes approx. 10-12 Hours from Howrah Railway Station Kolkata.
Taxi will charges 250 rupees per head from Siliguri Station (Taxi includes 10 Person). It will take 5 hours to reach Gangtok from Siliguri. Bus ticket price approx. 120 rupees Per head.
