Actually, to fully understand the relative positions of sun, moon and the earth which causes the phases, a 3D animation is required. In 2D, the full moon phase appears as a lunar eclipse as the moon is shown "behind" the earth, although in a full moon all three of them are not in a straight line.

From 1:31 to 2:23.: On the animation the moving direction of the Moon around the Earth is wrong. The Moon moving around the Earth to the opposite direction. When the Moon stand in the first quarter you can see that the right side of the Moon is bright and the left side is dark. In the third quarter the right side of the Moon is dark and the left side is bright. The Lunar Circles begins from the '"New Moon". After this the Moon is "growing". In the hungarian language : "swells". Increasing in size of the illuminated parts. This goes completly to the "Full Moon". After the "Full Moon" the Moon is wanes: have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size. In this animation the order is reversed.

It is really frightening how people can't simply see the absurdities in this model; first, 1:01 is not this just excatly the explanation of the lunar eclipse??????? Second, how on earth is the bottom part illuminated while the upper part is not?????? Lastly, the so called rotation of the earth is deliberately not taken into consideration cause otherwise we sholud see more than one phase of the moon every night !!! as my country's position in space every day; for example, if at 6:00 pm I see half of the moon lit, then at 4:00 pm, as the earth has rotated miles, my country's position would have been moved miles away from the moon and we should face the moon from a completely different angle and see the moon in a different phase and every single day from our country we should see the whole phases of the moon as we face the moon at all angles cause of one full rotation of the earth every single day and this does not happen at all !! Finally, then what about the lunar and the solar eclipses now!! Compare them to this model and u will know how naively we believed in such silly imaginative models. Wake up people.

This short piece was created for Epigeum's 'Learning Technologies Online' course, really just to show how an animation or multimedia may be used as part of a lecturer's course. Not specifically designed to be completely representative, unfortunately accuracy may have been slightly overlooked due to time constraints (although being a keen astronomer, perhaps I should have clocked this!). Thanks for your comment though Andrew - much appreciated!

A great video - one criticism however! At 1.12 when you show the moon phases, the New Moon is half shaded in. Understandably this is representing the side that is reflecting the sun's light. However pupils could get confused that this is a third ' half moon' ... if you get me!

27.3 days for the moon to orbit the earth, the actual time between lunations may range from about 29.18 to about 29.93 days.
@blakesnipe5347
@blakesnipe5347 8 жыл бұрын
This is because it take 27.3 days to orbit the Earth relative to the stars - but in that time, the Earth has orbited around the sun - so it takes an addition 2.2 days or so for the moon to line back up in the same position relative to the Earth and sun - for a total of about 29.5 days on average. The 27.3 day period is called the "sidereal month" - meaning _relative to the stars_, and the 29.5 day period is known as the "synodic month" - or _relative to the sun_. The same thing happens with the Earth's rotation. There is a sidereal day and a solar day. Caused by the same thing. The Earth rotates once relative to the stars (its ACTUAL rotation) in about 23 hours and 56 minutes (and change). This is the sidereal day - the amount of time it takes for the stars to reappear in the same position they were the previous day. However, in that time, the Earth has traveled in orbit around the sun, so it takes an extra 4 minutes for the sun to be back in the same position as the previous day - for a total of 24 hours - which is the solar day that our calendars are based on. If we based calendars on sidereal days, we would lose 4 minutes every day - and half the year, it would be dark at noon.

@blakesnipe5347
@blakesnipe5347 8 жыл бұрын
The moon orbits the Earth in a plane that is tilted by about 5 degrees relative to the plane that the Earth orbits the sun in. So it goes "through" the ecliptic (the ecliptic being the plane the Earth orbits the sun in) twice on each orbit. Once coming from the bottom up, and another time (about two weeks later) coming from the top down. On most full moons, the Earth is between the sun and moon, but not blocking light from the moon. A few times each year, the Earth DOES block this light giving us a lunar eclipse. These only happen when a full moon occurs at the same time that the moon is very close to crossing the ecliptic plane. The same applies for solar eclipses and the new moon. Most of the time, the moon is not in the ecliptic, but if a new moon coincides with the moon crossing the ecliptic (or very close to it), we get a solar eclipse.

Earth rotates 180 degrees in 12 hrs but Moon will take 14 days to go to the opposite side. So earth on one particular day sees pretty much the same phase of the moon.Of course it changes but it insignificant. How important 12 hrs compared to 14 days?. That how much it changes. to further clarify, remember moon takes 28 days to go around earth and earth takes only 24 hrs to rotate around it self. just like the sun, moon too rises from the east sets from the west

The moon's orbital plane is tilted 5 degrees relative to Earth's, so the moon usually goes over or below the Earth's shadow, but sometimes it crosses it, and then the lunar eclipse happens.

In Hungarian language C) "Csökkenő" = decreasing, shrinking D) "Dagadó" = swelling, growing, etc as a kid I learnt this: when the moon looks like a letter C its "decreasing, shrinking" so going to be "dark" when it looks like a letter D its growing ... so its going to be full moon... there could be some English words too that has first letter is C and D that has similar meaning.... maybe C - Ceasing moon.... I don't know a good one for D as "growing" moon in the animation looks like it's the other way... the first "phase" he sow was a letter C so it should be the "last" (ceasing) phase... Oh yea on southern hemisphere people are upside down:D so when i see C they see D ....and D when i see C:)

ok i admit i am ignorant but tell me this.. if it is a clear night and i cannot see the moon, does this automatically mean it is a `new moon`? or could it be in a different phase (full moon for example)and just on the opposite side of the earth??
@vayarre
@vayarre 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you and well done. Contrary to some of the earlier comments, this is (largely) accurate. The early part showing the Moon's and Earth's orbits were shown from a northern hemisphere POV. The latter part, showing the Moon's phases was shown from a southern hemisphere POV. (Hints: (a) The Moon is orbiting and the Earth is rotating clockwise and (b) look closely at the image of the Full Moon.) The earlier criticisms are probably northern hemisphere dwellers who are ignorant of the fact that only half of the world is seen from their perspective. The one inaccuracy is that lunar elongation is counted only from 0°to 180° (east while Moon is waxing), and then back from 180° to 0° (west while Moon is waning.)

We had a smiling moon, or "wet moon", or "Chesire moon" here in Oklahoma, USA 1-22-15... I only remember seeing these since about 2013 or so. I started reading up on them and apparently it is visible during winter in the northern hemisphere. So why haven't i ever seen any in 30 years? And now it seems like i've seen half a dozen since 2013? In the past it was either a ( ,...or shaped like a ) ...maybe 90 degrees to 45 degrees but never 180 degrees before like \____/ ...So has anything changed over the decades, or was I really blind for 30 years?

Then every picture after full moon is drawn wrong I think. Dark side should be illuminated. Size of the illuminated parts are correct it's just sides that are illuminated wrong.

The earth should be rotating faster, and if you scaled the speed of the earth's rotation to the orbit and speed of spin of the moon to that of the earth, it would not explain things so perfectly. The earth spins rather fast, especially at the equator. Yet the phases of the moon look much the same, at the same time, wherever you are on the world.

Can anybody explain why the moon always shows the same appearance. (the craters etc) Is it because the moon didn't rotate itself?
@blakesnipe5347

The moon rotates, but its rate of rotation is in sync with its orbital period. In other words, the lunar day is the same length as the lunar year because it is tidally locked with the Earth. If you were on the moon, you'd see the sun (and stars) rise and set every 27.3 days. It also takes the moon 27.3 days to orbit the Earth, so by the time the moon has rotated 90 degrees around the Earth, it has also rotated 90 degrees in the same direction, showing us the same face. So on and so on.

The Moon is tidily locked with Earth. Which means only one side of the Moon faces Earth. The Moon kinda rotates. Ever time it finishes an orbit, technically, it has spun all the way around, but not in one position. So the Moon is tidily locked so you always see that one face. :) Answered?

not really, when the moon is visible at day with a telescope you could see better the same face, hence when does it rotate that we just can't catch up with? I ve heard it moves around us but with only one side visible which is more logical.. :-)

the other day i was able to see the moon and the sun close to each other and the moon was half lit, how do you explain that.
@blakesnipe5347
@blakesnipe5347 8 жыл бұрын
The relative position of the sun and moon are closely monitored. The short answer to your question is - you didn't see what you are claiming to see - or you didn't see what you think you saw. When the moon is exactly half lit, the sun and moon should be about 90 degrees apart in the sky. Since you can see pretty much 180 degrees of the sky at a time, it is possible and even likely that the sun and moon will be out during the day at the same time. I wonder what you mean by "close to each other". Again, if you want to claim that they were 10 degrees apart and you saw half the moon lit, then you didn't see that. It didn't happen. Again, these things are tracked.

what about crescent moon after sunset? on the model this can not happen, or gibbous moon during day?

***** Just a few days ago again, the moon was half lit at like 3 pm , and the sun was on the right of it , so the earth wasn't even inbetween

man I have no explanation, if you seen what you said then I can't say why and that is why I ask how can I see crescent moon after sunset. So far no answer...

Peter Zak i can see it pretty much any time the moon is out in the day.. the other day i was on the beach at around 3 pm and my rfriend noticed the moon half lit up in the sky... then on the right about 45 degrees was the sun. You could have probably taken a picture and fit both the sun and the half lit moon in the same pic. It wasn't even opposite 180 degrees , but more like 45

So, the Earth too changes shape, if watched from the Moon

The Earth's phase seen from the Moon is always the exact _opposite_ of the Moon's phase seen from Earth. That means that when the Moon is full, the Earth is new, when the Moon is in its first quarter, the Earth is in its third quarter and so on.

@@fromnorway643 Absolutely right, one thing I like to mention to flattards is that when the moon is a crescent, you can often see the non-illuminated part of it as well, which is called earthshine. It's basically sunlight that is reflected off Earth, to the moon, and then back again. It's no surprise that when the moon is almost new, the Earth, as seen from the moon, is almost full, therefore reflecting a good chunk of light onto the moon.

Why is the earth rotating clockwise? and why is the moon going around the Earth clockwise? This is rediculous
@blakesnipe5347
@blakesnipe5347 8 жыл бұрын
First off, the Earth rotates and orbits the sun in a counterclockwise direction; not clockwise. Of course, this is really arbitrary - it's just that most astronomers would define the direction of rotation from the top looking down - and from that perspective, the motion is counterclockwise. However, if you viewed the system from the bottom, it would be clockwise - and just as valid a description. For our purposes, we will use the top-down perspective and call it counterclockwise. And the reason : Because the angular momentum of the system is conserved. Before the solar system formed, the entire system had angular momentum in a counterclockwise direction. Because of this, all the planets orbit in a counterclockwise direction - as well as rotate in a counterclockwise direction - except Venus. It is thought that Venus DID rotate in a counterclockwise direction, but was hit by something that knocked it "upside down" - it's still rotating the same direction it always was, it's just flipped over.
