I am just as amazed by how well designed the tripod/periscope sights work. Notice in the first video clip that they can adjust the legs so it's leaning against a steep muddy bank and yet the MG3 is still stable. Does anyone know its field of fire at 50 meters? The side-to-side movement seems surprisingly short.

Tommy Sands.....the SS were the masters at it as were their paras. The actual concept of camo uniforms was first used and applied in the Spanish civil war as all know German troops took part. The range of patters also changed throughout the war, again the Waffen SS, the arguably best modern fighting soldiers separate to actual special force units lead by the Liebstandarte LSSAH, Das Reich, Hitler Jugend were the arguably best front line shock soldiers in the war. The OKW General's always called for the LAASAH/Waffen SS to go in first and hard cos they were fanatically relentless and fought fiercely. My great Grandad fought against them in Greece, and I'll never forget he said they were the most honourable soldiers he'd met. Australian troops fought in Greece and Crete and many were taken prisoners. In the beginning the entry level standards for the LSSAH were simply staggering, If you look at early pictures especially at their Berlin barracks Licterfeld [which is still there minus the 2 giant soldiers at the entry gate and has been a US facility since the end of the war], the actual physical height of these soldiers was nearing 7 foot. They had to have zero fillings, and trace their ancestry bloodline back generations. If anyone is interested I've been to German several times, all over, and Berlin at least a dozen times, as a 14 year older by myself as a backpacker that my parents had to sign for permission to go, and I was able to go to Ost Berlin, checkpoint charlie and east berlin, back before midnight as were the rules. To get to Berlin obviously cos it was a pocket inside East Germany you had to catch the train, I will never forget at the border going into east Germany to get to Berlin it was like WW2, German Shepard dogs, wooden towers, my passport was checked with a weird machine on the train. I was able to go to the fuhrer bunker too, and gave US 20 to a policeman who let me walk down into the main entrance, I have wonderful pictures and a piece of bunker rock, amazing memories and I'm not even 50. The museum in Bastone in France is staggeringly kitted out, you can see SS and other uniforms, weapons, the first real sub machine gun and a version that could shoot around corners, cars, you name it, Hitlers cutlery. The Imperial War Museum in London also has a staggering collection.

a little about the tripod - it is 18 years ago now but i "somehow" can remember the most details... so first of all the MG3 is considerd a light machine gun. "Light" - because its still ~11kg. i i forgot the exact wheight of the tripod but i think it was around 12kg. Range in Bipod Mode is around 800m effectiv. With the tripod however it is considerd a heavy MG and then battlerange is extended to 1200m. On the tripod itself there is some kind of angle limiter. Its basicly two screws , one for each side of the slider wich also shows the angle degrees. The middle is zero and then you have your angle degrees on the left and right. Lets say you are in position and you expect the enemy to pas a field 600m away. You can now prepare the MG3 on its tripod in such a fashion that the weapons mobility to slide left and right is exactly how much it needs to spray the far left and far right of that field. Also inclination and declination can be prechoosen the same way (but it is some kind of screw mechanism with counter nuts to both ends) One could now ask :,, why would i limit the weapons firing angle?" But it is simple - that given field 600m away has turned into dead mans land with such a calibration. You KNOW that you only have to slide the weapon to the left and right to spray that field. Elevation or declination ( in case of higher position) is set beforehand to match the exact distance. So everything you need to do is to observe alittle with periscope or Binoculars to correct your lead. If i remember correctly the the Periscope sight was also magnifying but i dont know by how much. Anyway - God help ya if you are on the other side trying to cross that field!

Possibly-since 1934- the best infantry machine gun system still in existence. Some technologies and tactics are born to last and the German army's machine gun squad, after eighty plus years, is still hard to improve upon.
