Hey Stuart! AFAIK the struts have to be mounted with the reservoir (thick part) downwards, else the oil inside won't lubricate the seals properly. Correct me if I'm wrong please!

These are awesome! Think you’ll need some thread-lock on the nuts & bolts in the wings (or Nylock nuts). You might want to consider some nylon washers under the metal washers to protect the paint (if you’re bothered?) Nice mod 👍🏻 Would love to be considered for the set of these you are giving away 👍🏻 aka I’d love these!

I’d just be worried about damaging the paintwork with those metal bolts, nuts, washers etc. Even without moisture, metal on metal, unless it’s the correct composition, can cause corrosion.

Yes in my opinion it needs rubber or felt washers both sides of the bodywork, it was my first observation.

Aren’t the struts you fitted upside down? I fitted struts to my 38 Ioniq a few years ago. Best move as I keep my charging cable and 12 v battery booster under the bonnet so can easily open now with one hand
@stuart_thomas Жыл бұрын
I thought that originally, but they arrived that way around even though I did unscrew the fixtures for demonstration and the ‘wonderful’ photographic instructions supports that too 👍

Hi Stuart. Many thanks for this. I've now been the proud owner of a brand new se lr for 5 whole days and have just completed this mod thanks to your instruction vid. I've gone for the red as I've got the red mg4, looks awesome. Such an easy uograde ( when you know how 😉👍), although I was briefly caught out with the 'a' hole being where the sound deadening securing peg goes. Whip out the peg, screw in the strut ball joint and away you go!! Awesome, many thanks, much appreciated. Have you still got the MG4 ? and how are the struts holding up? 😁👍

That’s fantastic! Nice choice of colour to match the car. I still have mine and still going strong, although I don’t seem to drive it as much as I used to as I have access to other EVs which I’m either videoing with or my wife’s Tesla MY. Still love the car though ✊

Going to ask a boring question, would this modification affect the warranty?, also assume would need to inform insurer as well? Seen lots of people modifying MG4s, including someone adding a self opening/closing boot kit.
@stuart_thomas Жыл бұрын
Great question Dale, the car hasn’t been changed in it’s original form as such. All the original ‘secure’ components are still in place, nothing drilled or replaced and nothing to affect any existing components but it’s worth a shout with insurance company to be sure.
@alfonsodelgardeo2422 Жыл бұрын
So there's no storage space under the bonnet, and there's no oil/water to check so I would imagine that once you've showed all your friends that there's nothing to see under there the requirement to open that bonnet would drop to (approximately) never?? Hardly seems worth the "upgrade".
@stuart_thomas Жыл бұрын
It’s a fair way to look at it. The other way of looking at it which I try to portray is, if your not able enough, or struggle with heavy objects, these make it easy to open/close. Now that might be once or twice a year for windscreen wash but it’s better than the current offer. It’s quite a heavy bonnet so this will really aid a lot of people.
@alfonsodelgardeo2422 Жыл бұрын
@@stuart_thomas They've just announced these cars here in NZ. I think they'll sell like hot cakes. Good looking, good spec and not quite as "deliberately odd" as an Atto3 or GoodCat

@glennmorrell8964 Жыл бұрын
Hi, looking at how the strut is opening an closing I can see now that the strut body would hit and jam on the car panel preventing the bonnet from closing so maybe it is correct, cheers
@martiangod Жыл бұрын
Nearly all struts are fitted this way up they're supposed to be so the oil sits against the seal and lubricates

I brought a set of struts for a to be purchased MG4! Since change to a ZS so if any one is interested I have a unopened strut kit. £30 including postage mainlands UK. Despatched on receipt of payment.
@helenoliver3689 Жыл бұрын
I bought these for my Trophy. Unfortunately my car has an extra layer of what I can only presume is sound deadening under the bonnet and it is clipped into the same holes that are used above for the struts. Given the choice of removing the deadening to add the struts I have left the deadening there. (To be clear - I could possibly mess around a bit and remove the clips to fix the struts to also hold the deadening - but I paid a lot of money for the car and don't want to go messing around too much!) Oh and no fault/blame is aimed at Stuart - these would be great!
@stuart_thomas Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the sound proofing yet on the MG4. Are you able to detach the sound proofing and then add holes where applicable for the fixtures and then fix it back in place?
@helenoliver3689 Жыл бұрын
@@stuart_thomas I'm going to guess (I'll go look again in a bit) The hole used above (the top one) is (I think) one of the holes that the deadening fixes to - the large holes are present but the two smaller ones seem to have those plastic fixings in them.
@helenoliver3689 Жыл бұрын
As I thought - the upper holes (the small ones) are indeed used by the plugs for the sound deadening. Had a bit of a nightmare though - the first one (literally) pinged out and fell into the gap behind the front valance. Until I took off the plasic cover I couldn;t actually see it - right heart in mouth moment. The washer from the ball joint however is the same size as the plug that was there - all is good. (After mny scare losing the plug though I stopped while the going was good - finish off tomorrow 🙂)
@bitmanev4331 Жыл бұрын
That just begs the question why to install gas struts on a bonnet whats not a frunk? The only time you need to open it is to add screenwash. My previous Nissan LEAF was the same and never found it a problem of not having gas struts. Different story with our current i3 amd Model3 who does have frunks storing the charger cabels...
@everuss Жыл бұрын
Thanks Stuart... Just fitted to my Trophy ... you need to remove the associated black plastic bung at the relevant point. Also I used the larger hole which is a little further out. this meant I didn't need to bend the flexible steel holder to get it aligned..

so from a curiosity point of view, if you ever wanted to remove these, is that an option? i saw that there was a tool with a locking nut attached to a bar, and made me wonder if there was an easy way to do this? the main reason i ask is that if a part ever got damaged and you just wanted to revert back to factory setup, or had to return for end of a lease
@stuart_thomas Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, all bolts and nuts can be removed 👍
@lizziesharks1 Жыл бұрын
I guess the factory set up (the manual strut) will always be there in any case. I know what you mean though…..if the bonnet ball joints were removed then would the nuts then fall into the bonnet cavity and rattle around forever more? I suspect the answer to this question might be yes. However, as all the individual components of this set up are readily available then you could leave the struts on the car (my MG dealer said he would be delighted to sell it on with this mod still attached) or remove the struts and bottom assembly leaving the bonnet ball joints attached for the next buyer to fit new gas lifts if he so desires.

Did you take the sound deadening panel off to fit these. Or did your car not come with one ? My se does not have one. It seems to be 50/50 as to weather your SE or trophy has one. Regardless of when it was built or shipped. I presume you have to slightly modify the sound deadening panel to get these to fit if you have one ?

I must have a duff set of fittings as the boo Tom ones that fit on the body just fall or ping off. The locking things do not work and release as soon as the strut is moved to the upright position.
