I've owned my MGB GT for over 7 years now and several other 'B GTs before it so I describe some of the main reasons why I like the MGB so much. It's a great little classic sports car with plenty of charm and period features plus it won't cost the earth to buy and maintain! Sure it won't have the performance or reliability of a more modern car (MX5/miata are a similar proposition but a better choice for performance and reliability) but the 'B is special in its own quirky way and is a great hobby car!

I've had my BGT for 46 years. I'd never sell it. Love to drive it. I feel like I'm 25 again every time I get behind the wheel. Almost every time I park it, someone will come up and say " I use to have one of those, wish I still had it!"

It's an Aug. 73 car which I bought in Sept. 74. It was delivered to a Canadian visiting UK who drove it around there while on vacation. It was then shipped to Canada. This was a tax dodge scheme popular at the time. Volvo used to do it as well. It was my main vehicle for several years and suffered the brunt of quite a few winters here in Ontario but is still going strong. It's been repainted 3 times and still runs fine. I fitted an OD 6 years ago. You get to know a car very well when you own it for so long. One of my kids will inherit it. Just getting it ready to be put away for 4 months.

@@garethgoodchild2643 Lovely story. I ran a roadster in Toronto for 2 years and then drove down to NY & crossed to Seattle & Vancouver where I sold it & returned to UK. Once home I replaced it with a White GT & then another roadster. Fond memories. Today is MX-5's for me, I have 2 x Mk1 turbo's [150bhp & 204bhp] and a standard Mk2. With a lotto win I'd have a new MGB electric for daily buzzing around, a company nearby builds them.

@@peterbonnez That must have been a great trip across to Vancouver. We never went that far in the GT but regularly ran down to Cape Cod for a long weekend. 1200 miles return. I too like the B roadster. Had a 1970 model (brand new) for four years before buying the GT. My wife complained it was too cold so the GT was my solution. A lot of people migrated to the Miatas. Certainly a lot more comfortable and reliable than an old MG but lacking the charm. Yes an electric B is interesting but I’d miss the exhaust burble!

I think you've nailed it. I had a GT from 1982 to '87 and drove it to work every day. In the early 70's I caught the bus every day from Abindon to Harwell where I worked, and sat on the upper deck so as to see into the MG factory yard as we pulled out of Abingdon. Amazing days - I couldn't afford an MG of any kind until much later, but I always liked them, even though the performance wasn't good. I think the engines changed from a 3 bearing crankshaft to 5 bearings and that lost it a few bhp. Also some early ones had two 6 volt batteries rather than one 12 volt and in the 60's and 70's when we had real winters, that caused no end of problems. In 1982 we took ours on the Santander ferry to northern Spain and whenever we parked in a car park, it gathered crowds of people. Thanks for posting, I'm off to check prices.... :) :)

I had a B GT in 1981 and now I'm about to turn 70 I've been gifted a 74 chrome bumper in citron yellow which has been in a garage for 15 yrs,it needs loads doing but the body is good and the car is solid and everything works, I haven't died but I've gone to heaven 🙂🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You hit the nail on the head. Easy to work on plentiful parts. Raced at LeMans and Steve McQueen raced in one. It doesn't get any better.

Plentiful parts? Yea maybe in Europe or England. Sucks having to source questionable parts from EBay or pay and wait weeks for parts to ship from England. A lot of people here do half assed 12v swaps due to not being able to get 6v batteries here and often burn up a lot of wires. But that was my experience back in early 90’s with my 72 B took me 3 weeks to find a clutch and cost me more in parts and shipping than the whole cost of replacing the clutch in my new VW golf.

In 1969 I bought a 1967 MGB GT - wire wheels, blue with blue interior with white piping, and of course, no synchro in 1st gear. It was fairly easy to maintain and I loved driving it around. I wish I still had it. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment! Wow, I’d love to have driven an almost new ‘B, I always wonder if they ‘felt’ newer to drive than the examples I’ve had more recently, they’re only ‘factory fresh’ once I suppose!

Last week I took delivery of a 1967 B GT in Sandy Beige (very rare early GT only colour), which I last owned in 1988! Yes you heard that correct. So nice to be reunited after all these years. It perhaps needs a KZbin channel on its own, it's so original, original paint etc. Lovely to realise its past owners have looked after it so well.

I’ve only had mine 3 weeks and it really grown on me and I’m very glad I made the decision to buy one. It’s totally immersive motoring, as you say you have to plan to go out in it and the ongoing maintenance and tinkering is all part of the joy of ownership. It makes you realise just how sanitised the majority of modern cars are. Coincidentally my other car is a 2004 XKR Convertible which I love but it’s a totally different experience. Keep up the good work.

Great video thank you for posting up, thinking about buying one and this has some great reasons to do so. Work on my Royal Enfield Trials so doesn’t seem to far a leap on for home maintenance but would still keep the bike. Had a MX5 but did not have the character that I was looking for.

Glad you enjoyed the video, personally I love these cars, not fast but if you get one in reasonable condition they are fun to drive and you can spend as much or as little as you like keeping it going and bags of charm.... just be prepared for the random chat at every petrol station, car park and supermarket delivery if parked on the drive 🤣

Greatly enjoyed your talk on the good old MGB. I used to own a beautiful british racing green BGT till about 10 years ago, when I had to let her go to free up funds to pay for a Harley-Davidson with sidecar. I'd owned the BGT for almost 20years. after giving her a thourough "going over" when I got her, she proved absolutely reliable, no further corrosion issues, would always start the same way (run pump, choke out, starter on...1,2,3 there she is...) I loved the way one could run a car very similar to a late 40ties, early 50ties vintage but with at least some 70ties advantages like having disc brakes and 12v electrics.... thanks to the MGOC, I had a very beautiful leather&wood interiour, bolt-on wire wheels and a slightly tweaked engine to get hp just above the 100 mark ;) that was fast enough then. well, as you can see, the idea of running a british made car stuck, thats why I got my XK8 this spirng! the collection sure has moved on in the past 10 years, but I still have very fond memories of my MGB.

I've had my '71 GT here in the US for 10 years, although its been waiting for me to finish rust repair since late 2014. I daily drove my car, including through a very cold and snowy Chicago winter in 2013 with no problems whatsoever. It really is about the most practical vintage British sports car you can buy. - Parts are very easy to find (I can get many at my local chain auto parts store) and it is very easy to repair. - If the rust worm gets you there is no body part that you can't get a replacement for, right down to a full brand new shell made on original molds from the Heritage Society in the UK. - If the engine isn't powerful enough, the Rover V8 fits in with minimal modifications (and was offered by the factory as an option the last few years) and the GM 60 degree V6 family from the mid 1980's through the mid 2000's is an easy fit as well. Personally as I get back to work on mine I have a 2.8litre V6 from a 1987 Pontiac Fiero that I will be fitting to mine along with a GM 5-speed. - The interior is quite spacious. I'm 6-4 and have plenty of leg and head room. - Because of the hatchback design you can carry a very large amount of luggage or boxes or whatever, easily as much as a classic Mini.

I just came across your video, Googling a '67 MGB GT. It was the first car I ever bought (2nd hand of course)! I was so proud of my little roadster. Wooden steering wheel and all that lovely chrome. That was a long time ago in a different country, and now feel I'd like to own one again. Thanks so much for your video. Your car looks amazing. Very inspirational!

Wow thanks for the comment! Thankfully the MGB is still relatively affordable and easy to work on so I think it’s a great hobby car, mine looks ok from far but getting a bit crusty nowadays, needs a bit of TLC but that will be after I sort the Lotus out 😱

That's a nice car and I've always liked them! The house I live in now in the '80s when the old timer used to live here had an MGBGT and a Ford Ranchero. I would love an MGBGT someday, But since I already have a 1972 Beetle, family owned since new, I decided to buy an MX5-ND2 RF. It kind of reminds me of an MGBGT, and I feel the Miata pays homage to the MG at once parked in this driveway.

My favorite LBC of all time. I've driven AH 3000's, XK-E's and many others. This is still my favorite. The only changes I would make would be electronic ignition, hardened valve seats and a 5-speed manual. I don't need the extra power but I do need the simplicity.

Your MGB is exactly what I would want in an MGB - the colour, minilite wheels, wooden steering wheel, useable but still lovely condition.. wish I’d bought one a few years ago, they seem to be beyond my budget these days! Good video!

Nice! I liked your reasons for owning and it is a pretty car. I had a Midget which I loved for many of the same reasons you gave for owning your BGT. I now have a 1985 Turbo Esprit and I envy the room around your engine with which to work in!

I love the look of that blue BGT racecar with the flares and minilites. I equally love the stock wheels on my 99 XK8: funky minilites for sure: I would never replace them

Absolutely love this body style. Caught a ride from Dallas to Ruston, LA with an Air Force Major headed to Shreveport when I was in college. Killer ride, great interior and an altogether killer gran tourer imho. The only other Brit Sports cars I’ve lusted after are the after are the TR3 and the MGTF.

Very nice car Mark, and all your comments are spot on. My wife had at least three MGBs I was never a fan because they were so unreliable, and we used a specialist garage to maintain them. But they always had great charm and looked wonderful. Thanks for the videos.

I had a '67BGT from '72-'96.Loved the looks and handling,but the lucas electric and only 95 hp and no overdrive kept me from keeping forever.Now I drive a turbo 4 banger with 245hp that cruises at 80 at 2k rpm.If only....

We got a 76 coupe for 3k a short while ago. Took it to Caffeine and Machine last weekend, a 160 mile round trip and it was a fantastic experience. I'm now in love.

Yes I have one excellent car, and now I am retired, will sell the modern car to get full use of the MG, but I am not a purist, I do intend to fit with power steering. thanks for the video.

Granblogismo, good video and explanation of why you brought one. The opposite logic for the lotus then ? Very nice looking example of the MGB breed. I always remember my father had a two tone silver/grey MGC, became unreliable and unfortunately didn't make it but will always remember that car. Keep up the great videos regards Damian

Had a 1969 "B" GT, right hand drive (I was living in England at the time) I loved it!!!!! Yeah, they have their quirks, lots of quirks, but what a great car.

Nice! ‘69 was a good year for these having the better gearbox but before the later styling changes, agree there are lots of quirks but all part of the ‘experience’ I suppose 🤣

@@granblogismo I just bought a BRG '68 already fitted with a modern 5-speed conversion using a Nissan Z gearbox (very few B's in the States were fitted with O/D, 10% or so, and it is expensive to fit), and an aftermarket A/C system. It was refurbished by previous owners, e.g. new interior and paint and rechromed bumpers and the rebuilt engine has about 5k on it, starts on the button and runs beautifully. It has wires but I am intending to fit alloys. It's a wonderful car 😊

Beaut GT mate 👍. I'll be buying an MGB shortly after a long string of MX5's , 4 in total. Everyone seems to say that MX5's are very reliable and yet I've had 3 cars leave me stranded and all 3 where meticulously maintained. My NA had a water pump fail. My NB, the clutch slave cylinder went kaput leaving me stranded on a freezing cold night 😆and the same thing happened to my NC, in a peak hour Sydney heat wave commute. All three required towing and a fair amount of maintenance compared to every other car I seemed to have owned... Window motors, rocker cover gaskets, suspension components I'd say all premature failures... I can't imagine a simple well serviced MGB could possibly be any worse for me. Happy driving 😊

I would love to hear about your two previous MGBs. What were they like, why did you decide to sell them again, what makes your current one so soecial that the previous ones did not live up to? I drive a late '71 Mk III GT myself and love it, but I guess there is always room to improve it.

From a Yank in Southern Calif, thanks for a great video exhibiting one of the prettiest and most practical sports cars ever devised by a Brit. I wouldn't be at all opposed to owning a later model with the plastic bumpers. The well proportioned lines are still evident. My other option would be a later model TR6 with hardtop. But I'll bet they are pricey nowadays. I agree with you that the old cars are lot more agreeable for "shade tree mechanics," given all the space in the engine bay and the simplicity of operation. I'm curious about the carburation in yours. It doesn't look familiar to me ... but I'll bet its easier to tune than the dual carbs. Maybe the power and fuel economy are a bit better? Do you know if anyone has ever tried an aftermarket EFI system (presumably with electronic ignition) with that engine?

Hi Shannon! Thanks for the comment, I used to have a later car with rubber bumpers and really liked it, those cars make more sense as a daily driver too! The TR6 is nice but yes a bit more expensive! The carburettor in mine is a Weber 45 dcoe which is a popular modification for race MGBs as power is slightly improved at top end, but it makes no difference and perhaps worse for street use than the standard SUs but you’re right that the tuning once set is easier than the SUs and I think the sound it makes is lovely! There are or were some EFI conversions around, expensive but efficiency, reliability and performance all improved from what I heard 👍

I don't think there will be as many Mazdas running around in 50+ years as there is the MG,they look more stately ,I've been through & own various classics & the GT will always be in my collection for the reasons you listed,great little car that keeps up with everyday traffic also..Nice video & you have a lovely example of straight MG 👍

Thanks! Yeah I love the MG, but some people might feel the same about the Mazda so I think they’ll have a long term following, 50 years? Not sure, maybe 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for the comment, what year/colour GT do you have? I’m always interested to hear about other folks’ cars 😄

@@granblogismo Like the Mazdas but jurys out on if the electronics will last,time will tell ...She's A 1969 gt Tartan red\black vinyl roof,red original leather,wire wheels,chrome bumper.overdrive.She's a weekend driver & I've kelt her as straight as possible.

@@k.h.5520 Back in the early 70's I owned a '69 TR6 and MG's are great as well. Mine spent much of its life in the shop. One thing after another went out. Regardless, I miss it. However... I can you that with certainty the Mazda Miata is well built with solid electronics and a total delight to drive. Why do I say this? Because I own a 2020 MX-5 Miata 100th Anniversary version. They are well known for getting to over 200-250K miles with little to no issues. My 4th Gen MX-5 has 181 HP stock, the engine is naturally aspirated and only weighs ~2350 lbs. It's a blast to drive and you can drive it hard and it will respond. Steering is VERY responsive... I added an aftermarket cat-back exhaust which has been dyno-tested to add ~8 hp. Of course that will be at the hi-end of the engines powerband which revs to ~7500 rpm. The Miata's soft-top is manual and goes up or down in 5-8 seconds. It's extremely well-engineered and the best out there IMHO. Lastly, the 6 speed manual tranny is one of the smoothest shifting, top-rated manual transmissions EVER... check it out if you don't believe me. Gawd, I love all these old-school Brit sports cars and may still pick one up at some point, something like this MGB. however having said that, don't EVER discount what 40-50 years of tech and engineering improvements have done for the breed... that being open-top motoring which is the next best thing to motorcycling, and far, far safer... just sayin'... 😉😉😊😊

Would love to get another MG. Purchased a 72 MGB when I joint the army in 92. Loved the look and style but was a bit unknown was how hard it was to find parts. Here in America MGs are as rare and expensive as they come. Especially a hardtop. Or the GT. Basically can’t find a decent MG under $10,000 here. Even non running parts cars will run a few thousand.

NOTHING make a British Roadster look better than a GT roof. See Spitfire, Jag etc. But best of all was the MGB-GT. I bought my first MGB in 1976 and I am just now selling my last one, a '74 GT.

You have a nice looking GT. Did you consider the Triumph GT6? It was what I had and sure liked the inline 6 instead of the MG 4 cylinflder.

Yeah I like the GT6, would love to have one for sure! There’s just something that pulls me to an MGB GT though, maybe I prefer the styling but also the GT6 was about twice the price of a similar B when I was looking for one, maybe one day 🤞

Granblogismo: I heard that lead free fuel [which is the only fuel available in New Zealand] ruins the valve seats in those B series engines.Do you have that problem?I had an old Metro and used an additive which was supposed to protect the valves,but they burned out anyway on the A series engine.

It’s true that unleaded fuel wears the valve seats but reconditioned cylinder heads often get hardened ones so that they can run unleaded without issue, plus if you get the machine shop to port/polish the ports at the same time it’s a great way to get a bit more power 👍

No idea! As far as I’m aware it came with the car 🤷🏻‍♂️ if you’ve tried the usual suspects like Moss, MGOC and other parts suppliers maybe try eBay since I doubt it was only used in the ‘B and might get one the same or very similar from other models from the same time?

I had a MGB GT back in 1979 and enjoyed driving it all over Europe . A great car , reliable and good to drive. However it rusted had poor brakes and is under powered. But in the day it was good.

Sold my MGB GT (1968, teal blue) for € 2.750 some 20 years ago. Big mistake even though I had no storage at that time. Big emotional value which I still feel, but that’s life I guess.

I want one of these as my first car but I'm scared of buying one that has rust because I am not experienced in rust repair. They are beautiful cars tho and I hope that I will be able find a relatively rust free one.

Yep rust is probably the most costly thing to fix and can end up being many times the value of the car, body condition should be number one priority when looking at one since all the other mechanical bits are relatively cheap to sort out 👍 good luck with your search!

I once took my GT6 to a car show at Sledmere House, the ad said open to all, but there was my GT6 and a TR6, and every other car was an MG 🤣 Did we get some looks, will never forget it. Was a great day out. I couldn't justify buying a GT6 now, the values have gone silly!

@@terryc8164 Interesting to hear you had a GT6, I restored a MK3 over a period of 6 years from 2006 -12, I then sold it to a classic car dealer in late 2018 as I wanted something different. I bought myself an MG CGT, I'd preferred an Austin Healey 3000, but my budget wouldn't go to that, so the C is a poor mans Healey. It's now going under a full restoration. Comparing the C to the GT6, the C is a much better grand tourer than the GT6 could ever be, but the Triumph engine is far superior, silky smooth and much better torque. As for the MG B's, they're the blandest sports car ever made especially the roadster. The GT version is far better with Italian styling. The MG B's were obsolete by 1970, there performance is dire compared to the sports saloons being made in the 70's! If people now want a good MG sports roadster buy a TF, I bought one as I wanted a soft top for sunny days! They are brilliant far better than the B could ever be , there road handling is exemplary and the K series engine is a peach of a power unit - as long as you regularly service it. Oh yes the classic car dealer who bought my GT6, sold it for over £19k, so as you say the prices have gone silly!!

@@stratac30 I sold my GT6 for just over 3K, some years ago now though. Was a mk2. The values didnt do much till 4 or 5 years ago I think, then they went bonkers 🙂. I only sold it because I could not get new door seals back then, they were shot, and I used her all year round, and I got fed up with drying the carpets out all the time and repainting the floors inside every spring time. She was my daily driver. Went all over the country in her and in the hot weather that was fun, like being in a an oven 🤣 but I loved it, so wore shorts from May till Sept each year!

I was just looking at my dad's MGB GT yesterday thinking of working on it. It's just in an enclosed trailer away from home so it's difficult to get to to work on. It's one he bought probably 15 years ago and never worked on it. I'd love to get it running and driving I'm just not sure what that'll take at this point. I've got the 76 Mini and a 63 CJ5 I want to work on too. But thinking about it, the GT is the closest to good, so that's probably the next place to start after I get my Esprit back together.

Wow that sounds like a lot of projects! Thankfully the ‘B isn’t too complex mechanically to get sorted, bodywork is the time-suck on these cars so if the body is ok I’m sure it won’t take long 👍👍

@@granblogismo Only body damage is the front right fender is pushed in a little. The rest is fairly rust free and straight. I think it was a carb problem originally since the intake manifold is off and the exhaust manifold is loose. I've got a rebuild kit for it but I'm wondering if just buying some reman ones is a better way to go. I've got an 87 YJ and I tried rebuilding the carb and it just never ran to my satisfaction afterwards.

Yeah carbs are not something I’m that familiar with working on and always seem to have loads of bits that could be broken or assembled upside down! Some refurbished ones by a specialist is the way I’d go then setting them up with someone who knows what they’re doing 🤣

Thanks for a great video. 👍. I'm very much looking forward to getting an MGBGT in the near future 😀. I have had a classic mini and an early 70s Beetle in the past. From experience I think I will have to wait until I can sort out some covered storage for an MGBGT to avoid the rain 🌧 and minimise the rust.

You might just about fit, best to try one! If I were you I’d look at a slightly later car since they had reclining seats which early ones didn’t, could always retrofit them I suppose!

I've often been tempted to get a GT, maybe a tatty rubber bumper one as a Sebring project. All your cars are British design icons. You just need an old Land rover now...

Ha yes! I’d love a Land Rover or an older Range Rover or maybe even a classic Mini! The rubber bumper ‘B is actually alright, apart from the ride height and heavy bumpers it does have some welcome improvements and the engine bay is setup better for v8 conversions, great cars to tinker with and tax/mot free now in the UK

It’s not as reliable as a modern car generally speaking, you can certainly get a garage to work on it but it might frustrate you if you’re not interested in fixing it yourself especially if wanting to use it as a daily driver

I’m 5’11” and a bit so just under 6’ and seems ok, the seat is pretty much as far back as it will go though but think the later cars had more adjustment, taller folks do drive them, there’s a chap called Kieran I think who has a Instagram feed called ‘molly_the_mgbgt’, he’s pretty tall and seems to cope ok, hope that helps?

Hi Stuart! It’s ‘Old English White’ or something very close to it, I had the car resprayed about 5 years ago and there was a beautiful Austin Healey 100 in this colour so went for the same shade 👍

It’s funny you say that! When I got the car it was a couple of different shades and snowberry was potentially one of them 🤣 the yellow mostly comes from the video editing I think where sometimes the colours are pumped up a bit on cloudy days!

Why, oh, why didn't you buy one in BRG with chrome wire wheels? At least you had the good sense to buy a '67 with the unpadded dash and marvelous Smiths instruments. But does yours have twin SUs? I don't see the massive air filter hoods.

Haha, personal preference I suppose! The UK cars never came with padded dash thankfully, mine came with wires which I’m yet to refurbish but truthfully the minilites are easier to clean/maintain so make sense most of the time even if not as pretty. I’m also on the fence about chrome wheels, quite like the painted look 🤣 The car originally came with twin SUs but previous owner fitted the big Weber 45 which is there now, makes a nice noise but no real-world performance advantage so only really makes sense on race cars.

It’s a Weber 45 DCOE, it was/is used mainly as a race carb since it gives better performance at the top end and stays in tune once set up properly, for day to day driving it probably isn’t worth changing from SUs although it does sound better 🤣

Hello, I just watched a video {The Smoking Tire} of a GT with a supercharger, giving 112BHP at the wheels, which is a good upgrade and won't overly stress the engine internals, should you ever want a bit more shove.

Yes I’ve seen that video a few times, lovely car! I was looking at superchargers before Christmas actually, something I think I will do at some point, they’re expensive but seem to be good ‘bang for buck’ as well as putting power where you want it rather than all ‘top-end’ 👍

Great stuff! One bit of advice, avoid the early rubber bumper models(1975 ish)! The steel used in these cars was really terrible and they did not come with the improvements like thermostatic fan, better brakes, engine bay to take the V8 and other refinements, the later ones had arguably a less classic looking dash but old style dash can probably be retro-fitted with a bit of effort if desired 👍

Haha, if it’s not a daily driver then it’s really not costly to own since you can just put it away until you save for things to be fixed, parts are also quite affordable, bodywork is the most expensive part but that’s true for most classic cars 👍

@@granblogismo well I guess that's true, plus the fact that these beauties used to cost next to nothing in the coupé configuration until very recently when people started asking 20k euros or even more means they'll remain a dream of mine. It is true that they look like Aston's Little cousins though 😅 that front grill is superb.

Sadly from 2030 on all the combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one single station per city or county...allmost same story with the USA (califorina banns combustion cars from 2027 on and stops selling fuel and oil...)
