MGF power steering: on or off?

My MGF didn't have EPAS from new. Big mistake, I pulled a muscle in my arm parking it in a tight smooth-surfaced underground car park in Cannes. So when I got home I had EPAS retrofitted and it made a great improvement. Don't forget that the cars not fitted with EPAS at the factory had a different slower rack.

Yes, to be honest I think the only time you really want power steering is while parking. Being able to turn it back on just before parking would be great.

More MGF videos please, possibly any modifications you would plan on doing? Maintenace video guides would be great as everything is forum posts, and for a noob like me who wants to get into DIY car stuff videos are far better.

The TF should be the same, but it also has a sharper rack so you might not feel it necessary after all!

What kind of tires ( size ) did you have when you made the test ??? I actually drive with 16" 215 x 40

R15s: 185/50 front, 205/50 rear Standard early VVC spec

I drove mine for a few months with power steering, was so much better when I took out the fuse. I put it back in for the mot and on a long motorway drive it actually felt scary how light it felt. Not sure if it malfunctioned or somthing, but felt fine when I pulled over and pulled out the fuse again.

Doesn't it deactivate over 30 mph like the TF?

Mgf has slower ratio rack compared to tf. Try it on a tf & it's too heavy.

I will have to try this on my VVC, I have heard from a couple of different sources that it's better without EPAS

Ex power steering.... speedometer stops working? Possible the other way round , without Speedo operating power steering out of action..... discus?

Good question. If the speedo stops working then the PAS stops working. I had a temperamental speedo cable which caused the power steering to come on and off at random! Naturally I removed the fuse and soon got used to it without. But if you remove the fuse and your speedo is fine then it stays working.

@@EGMedia1 if the speedo cable or speed sensor fails the power steering defaults to permanently on which is a nightmare at speed as it’s far to light.

If the engine speed is high for a few seconds but the speedo reads zero, the EPAS unit assumes the speedo signal has failed so it turns off power assistance - you wouldn't want maximum assistance at motorway speeds. One year, my VVC failed its MOT because the EPOS fault light came on while they were doing the fast-idle emissions test. I had to explain to them how they caused the light to come on. They are an MG garage, they're supposed to know this stuff! I shouldn't have to have to explain how it works to them.

Doesn't the power steering stop assisting above a certain speed, which would make pulling out the fuse a bit unnecessary?

It is speed-variable, but there's always some assistance there. It's noticeably heavier even at 70mph.
