Samantha Wong From my experience, we used to use special small black mics for drum sets that are set up behind the drum kits/can’t really be seen from the audience... in one shot you can see some wiring leading into the area of the drum set, plus all the other instruments have live leads as well. I don’t doubt that they are live, considering this award show has the capacity to do so. The reason for music shows not allowing live instruments is because it takes too long to set up unfortunately, considering they have bands recording in the same section/time frame as performance groups, plus the time frame/capacity to sound check for instruments is too hard- even with wireless mics. :(
