I love the way this video portrays how the child sees things and his perspective of the harsh, ugly world around him, & his mom just sees "normal" life because its what she's grown used to seeing her whole life. She is desensitized & blind to what it really is that has him terrified..

I was a new mom the year this song came out and this video devastated me. The song brought out this sense of nostalgia, mourning my childhood and anxiety at having to be a grown up and take care of this baby who needed me so much. The dangers of the world really come into focus when you're a first time mom and wanting to protect this precious baby from everything but knowing you can't- at least not forever. Now my "baby" is 16 and I'm having to learn to let go as she grows into an amazing young woman. It's scary. So here i am watching this video and crying, again.

I feel this very much, I was in my early years of college when I heard this, and now I'm almost 33. A lot has changed for me since then, for the better and for the worse. Back then I was much more free. @@callumjerry I did. It's ridiculous. If you think that shows he was ok, you are deeply mistaken. The simple fact that mommy is there to tell him monsters are ok, sending him to them is a fundamental trust breach. Kids this age have no way of processing, of differentiating fake from real, it will get back at him and bite him in the ass as anxiety, trust issues, etc. This is really shameful. Maybe the fact that he can review the video as he grows up will help him process that. Maybe.
@ezakustam3 жыл бұрын
@@yanaantonio42 Ostensibly, the issue is more that he wasn't even afraid of them. He doesn't equate them with danger. I have an injured friend who literally looks like a model with a zombie face, and neither one says a thing about her character. In any case, editing can hide a lot. What we do know is that in the making of, he didn't really seem upset by them, but in the video itself, in places he does. We don't see the whole picture. It did make me furious before I saw the making of. It would be one of the greatest videos of all time if they actually avoided traumatizing the kid.

i feel like this song really talks about how children need to be protected from the world even if the world consists of good people. for example, look at the guard. he is also depicted as a creepy guy despite saving the boy. mgmt is showing how the child is innocent and in a foreign, new environment, everything is scary. their parents have to be responsible for their safety and well-being. or maybe im just overanalyzing lmaoo

Probably right about it being a scary foreign world for kids.. but that's a part of life. Coddle your child too much and you'll raise a person that will break apart from the slightest things..
@becknamitth4 жыл бұрын
The analysis goes: mother = narcissistic, self pre occupied. Kid = gets no attention and feels it (attention = knowing a responsible parent is watching you if something scary happens). To a kid that is left alone unintended the world becomes a scary place. People who have no intention of harming you seem scary because you don’t know that and if they are dangerous there’s nothing there to prevent them from harming you, and that makes everything scary. Except mgmt.

Here to relieve the commenters concerned about the child actor: he was completely fine during the music video. There's a BTS video that shows him laughing and playing with the monster animatronics before they even attempted filming him. The mother was always close by in case he got too scared. The crying parts were mostly of him being upset at other things which were edited in post to make it look like the monsters were scaring him

As someone who grew up with a negligent mother, this music video describes the feeling perfectly, especially the animated part where you view the mother as divine, where her divine love is unattainable. And because of this figure, you get limited protection from this big bad world, and you are overrun by fear from everything. I know they maybe did this kid bad, but honestly this music video is such a good piece of art, and the song describes the same feeling accurately. Considering if they didn’t completely traumatize the child, this was an incredible take on how scary the world is when ur young. Specially with such a vivid imagination already… I love how they portray the mother as oblivious too…. Like our parents will often write off children’s fear of monsters, or when they say they see something in their room and say something like “oh, you just have an . overactive imagination”… Exactly.. & that’s what makes it all the more terrifying… doesn’t make it any less real to that child

The phrase "if you gaze long enough into the abyss, the abyss gazes back into you" is often attributed to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It conveys the idea that when one is confronted for a prolonged period with dark, unfathomable, or disturbing aspects of life or existence, it can have a profound effect on the observer. The phrase suggests that such contemplation can lead to a personal, internal reflection of the darkness or complexity being observed, potentially impacting one's own psyche or being. It is often used to express the concept that prolonged exposure to negativity or darkness can have a transformative influence on an individual

For the ones who care about the toddler: The video has been criticized for its treatment of the toddler who appears to be truly frightened throughout the video, although it is stated on the MGMT website, "No children were harmed in the making of this video." Stereogum noted that the video "essentially polarized everyone old enough (but not too old) to know what the internet is." While MTV noted that "They really don’t make videos like this any more … mostly for legal reasons", The band later released a "behind the scenes" video through their official KZbin channel that shows the toddler laughing while interacting with the puppets and actors in monster costumes. ~Wiki

The year this song came out, I was just 3 years old. and yet, this song must have slipped into my subconscious to this day. It may sound strange, but today I heard it for the first time in life and found out that it came from this band. And it's something that many have said and I don't think I highlight this over the others, but it's like that synthesizer tune transports me to my childhood, something that I miss and implore to return to. where everything was innocence and what mattered was playing, having fun, making friends at school, visiting grandma and feeling incomparable excitement at Christmas. Now that I'm almost 18 years old, I realize how valuable it was to have enjoyed my childhood more. I love

This is amazing and crazy at the same time. I liked MGMT a lot in my teenage years and today, watching the video clip (perhaps for the second time) but with today's awareness, I realized that this boy was me, and not only with things that frightened me in physicality but also abuse in other dimensions because I saw many "not so good things", until as an adult I was able to cope better and realize that I can look at my shadows. Anyway, many of us who are super sensitive as children and are being obsessed in some way, whether karmic or not, end up asking to stop seeing. On reflection, there may be someone out there who makes sense to you. You are not alone and they can cease to exist as soon as you lose your fear of them, and you are super special!

I've recently read about them and that those most successful songs, kids, electric feel etc. Are basically the intentionally most generic sounding pop songs, made as an ironic statement in their college time. So it is double the irony that it has gotten as far as it has. I applaud them.

Sure they created the skeleton of the songs intending them to be cliche, but of course by the time they were producing LP they were clearly more authentically engaged with the whole creative process. If they wanted the final release to be trite and uninspired they surely could have done so, but they put some real craftsmanship into making one some of the only mainstream millennial music that'll really stand the test of time. The hook may be simple af but nothing remotely like this was in mainstream rotation before, and i think by the time it came around they were absolutely hip to all that.
