There’s dozens of examples of where two people will be trapped in a life or death situation, and they’ll report feeling like a third person was there helping them make decisions. Your brain will “project” an image of your expertise outside of itself to guide you in extreme stress, essentially. Venom is in the exact situation where he would create a Third Man. “Someone” external to help him remember what to do. It’s also important to note, this can happen with 1 person or groups of people. Ishmael was always just a projection of Venom’s own psyche helping him. And, to be clear, I don’t mean he made a ghost who actually did shit, like Psycho Mantis at the end of 4 or something. I mean he hallucinated Ishmael throwing the silencer he, Venom, actually threw. Because the stress of the situation was too much for his barely conscious recently comatose brain to handle and it needed an external locus of control in that moment to survive.

Lol yeah and I doubt Kojima himself even truly knows what’s going on. A lot of the story across these games, and even within individual games, doesn’t really make sense and has quite a lot of gaps. Way back when I first played MGS 1 on PS1, it became my favourite game. After that I bought a PS2 just to play metal gear. And same for PS3. I never got a PS4 but got a pc instead and MGS 5 came out on pc too so there was no need to buy a PS4. I wonder if we will ever get an MGS 6.

I know people don’t agree with Venom and Big Boss being extended versions of the same character but if Big Boss was whole why the rumors about him being a cyborg in MG2 and being rebuilt in 4. Also why does Big Boss wonder if Zero hated or fear him if Zero wanted him to live. I’m curious if this taking place in Big Boss’ or Venom’s mind can other characters be an extension on what is going through the mind. It’s also hard to believe Kojima would forget about Big Boss’ fighting style and the time stamps in the ending. Ever MGS game lies to you but only V never comes clean or does it? Ultimately it’s up to the players to come together with their own “truth.”

I'd like to note another similar character situation: Viktor Reznov. While his false existence is fully explained, I think Ishmael works in the same way (just replace hypnotism with a piece of metal touching Venom's brain). They're clever plot devices that add character and background without being boring. While Reznov was a bit more involved in the story, Ishmael is sort of just a tutorial character that adds room for speculation.

If I may add to this excellent theory: A) How would big boss find and identify digoxin in a hospital ward so quickly? B) How would he know exactly what digoxin is used for? C) How would he know how long it takes for digoxin to kick in? All immediately after a 9 year coma? On the other hand, the subconscious of Venom would have had all of his previous knowledge as a medic! Also! Both times that Venom gets a dislocated limb, Ishmael fixes it for him. After the prologue, when you get these exact same dislocations Venom snake uses the exact same technique as Ishmael to fix it. Almost as if they share the same medical knowledge ;) P.S. Moments ago The Third Boy pilots a wrecked helicopter and uses it to decimate a squad of soldiers, then suddenly running over the man on fire with an ambulance is somehow out of the question? The entire game features men torturing each other then faltering right when it’s time to “from hell’s heart I stab at thee”- in other words “pull the trigger”. Skull Face has dozens of chances to end the rivalry betwixt him and Big Boss and never does. Venom lets Huey go despite the whole of Mother Base going under, erasing a game’s worth of progress. This is after he has to deal with the events of “Shining Lights, Even In Death”. He doesn’t even kill Skull Face. It makes sense. You convince yourself you’ll tear the place apart when you finally get fired, you’ll punch that bully in the mouth when you get the chance, you’ll tell the family how dad really was at the funeral, but you find yourself hesitating at the last second, smiling and keeping the peace like always. Even the man on fire doesn’t take his revenge after 20 years of waiting. It’s like my old Buddhist teacher used to say, “it feels good to hate”. It’s actually difficult to find nuance, to not let yourself hate, and to realize the person you despise has a lot more in common with you than you’d like to admit.

I would also like to add a few things if they haven't been pointed out before: - If Ishmael were really there and if he was the real Big Boss, why didn't he pick up the gun the doctor dropped in that room on the way out? The only gun "he" picked up was a completely identical gun to the one you picked up. - If Miller was constantly talking about "Revenge" why wouldn't have Mantis picked up on that emotion? Because Miller was working with Cypher the whole time and playing his role, he never felt those emotions, Eli, Venom, Volgin and Skull Face were all fighting for control, but nobody else effected Mantis, not even Miller. - The cassette player next to your bed in the hospital was used to implant alot of those memories you heard on cassette from Ground Zero and TPP, sort of like how the cassettes were used to effect the parasites, which would also be the catalyst for the nanomachines later on and how they were used to control those they were implanted with. Also the sheer fact that he introduces himself by saying "Call me Ishmael" after the doctor says that Venom is checked in under the name Ahab. Captain Ahab is the main character of Moby Dick and his first line of dialogue is "Call me Ishmael". As soon as I heard that line delivered in Kiefer Sutherland's voice I felt like it was pretty clear that Ishmael is your subconscious trying to protect you.

This is crazy! But I noticed many of these little details too, especially Ishmael. The eye, the knife to the shoulder without a wound, the pee getting Venom discovered rather than Ishmael. It would make sense that Ishmael is a projection of himself, to deflect his betreyal of The Boss's wish. It's why all of the mentions of Boss is met with apathy. He created another person to live through (our avatar) so he didn't have to deal with his knowledge of Boss "putting down her gun" in Peace Walker. She betrayed all that he stood when he found out that she did that, and Big Boss became a lie. He was never her succsessor, and was incapable of ever being anything other than a solider. Putting down her gun meant she was more than herself, and he never understood that until he died at her gravesite.

There is a group of French youtubers, all the way since late 2015 early 2016, that came to very similar conclusions about the “truth” of MGSV, analyzing philosophical references inside the game, saying that what is presented to us is certainly not the truth. Recently one of them, using his knowledge in philosophy and literature, stated that nothing said or seen in this game can be trusted. Especially when you consider that this game might only be a memory of Snake just before operation Intruder N313. (The scene we see when we lauch TPP for the first time) Those guys got hours and hours of one of the most interesting content about MGSV on internet, it’s too bad they barely translated anything in English in their work, I’m sure you and your audience would have loved their videos.

It's not about what MGSV could have been. The game was deliberately constructed to leave more questions than answers when looked into. It doesn't matter that it's not baked into the actual plot, it's more like a puzzle. We have a game with a story laid out to us with enough discrepencies to generate theories like this to try and solve the puzzle. It's really neat actually.

If the timing of when Big Boss leaves after talking to Ocelot is before the hospital event after all, then it's possible one part of the plan meant Venom could have been killed in the hospital and everyone would believe Big Boss himself had actually died.

Ishmael could be only a vision, brought on by Medic as a coping mechanism by his subconscious to make sense of the Big Boss tactics he was brainwashed with. Without reference of what to do in a situation, the false memories literally manifest as a guardian angel. I dont believe Medic would be able to get out of that situation without the big boss memories. The shrapnel in his brain most likely has something to do with it. Its a saying that we can not create a new face in our dreams, that faces are always of someone we've seen before. It makes sense that Ishmaels face is covered up then. Think about it. If medic believes he IS big boss, why would he see himself guiding him.

i kinda want a DLC that expands on venom snake's character after he becomes aware that he's not big boss, ending with his death in zanzibarland. ofc it wouldn't really feel right without kojima unless done impeccably well, but it would certainly make for a neat character study.

It makes sence. + the scene where he meets Eli and betrays the man on fire could relate that his powers are conducted by people's hatred and revenge, Eli had an even bigger grudge with Venom, and Mantis saw an even better duo to fuel his powers, both linked by destiny. Then the Paz illusion scene could just be Mantis making Snake remember what he lost (by killing her again in front of him), just to make him even agrier.
