The VRR can’t be replaced by any software updates. “VRR can greatly reduce screen tearing and stuttering, which can be distracting and frustrating when playing games.” For me, this is the main reason of return + bad speakers. The display has a lot of stuttering resulting generating for me and unpleasant feeling like dizziness.

This was probably the most helpful review I've seen so far. Thanks! I've been going back and forth trying to decide Ally or Go and I think I'll go with the Ally after watching this. I know a lot of comments are saying that the issues with the Go can be fixed, but I believe the average consumer (like myself) wants things to just work out of the box and not have to deep dive into settings to make a $700 purchase operational (although I know the Ally has its out-of-box issues as well).

Good luck navigating without the touchpad lol just use the sticks or touch screen. And oh, and if you're gonna use an SD card, just forget it. It will be toasted in no time. Worst is Asus already acknowledged this issue but won't be fixing it 😂

This video seems awfully biased. I'd have no problems with it, if you gave your reasoning for returning the Legion, but your premature judgement on which product is objectively better is laughable. 1. Comparing a tech product on software maturity, when one has just released and the other had 3 months of updates, is not fair. Give the Legion Go three months for parity. 2. Yes the Ally has quieter fans, but at least the Go doesn't fry SD cards. Again, through software updates adjusted fan curves could give a more quiet experience. 3. The higher resolution of the display and the ability to take off the controllers make it the perfect multi-media device. Want a tablet, you got it. Want to game, perfect. Hook up a Bluetooth keyboard, now you can use it everywhere for work without looking like a gamer. No one is forcing you to use the maximum resolution for gaming, but you can definitely use it for media content. 4. The Steam Deck also doesn't have VRR and no one's complaining there.

Legion go has had 5 months to perfect their product over their competition lol so that argument is flawed, the sd cards dont fry if you set the manual fan curve, keep its tempreture to below 60.C with ease which also is still quieter then the legion go, even if the fans do go loud the speakers go louder then the legion go. The joysticks may detach but they also have shite dead zones and wobble like fk you sound like youre simping hard for the legion go 🤣🤣🤣 cope boy

That game you are playing is running nowhere near 30ps on the Go, let alone 60, so I don't know why you expect it to be smooth. From what I've experienced and all the videos I have seen in direct comparisons show the Go beating the Ally by 5-10fps in like settings. I think you're doing something wrong. I had the Ally and had to have one replaced because the sd card slot. I was so afraid of it happening again I had the fans pretty much full on again. The vrr definitely helps on the Ally, but once I got the settings dialed in, I was surprised how smooth the display could be without vrr. Also, I've seen a Legion Go update forecast from Lenovo which shows the timeline of when they think software issues will be addressed. For example they are releasing the new graphics driver next week.

Brother it’s way too early for u to make this vid. When the rog ally released armory crate was a buggy mess + performance was way worse due to the bad bios. The legion go hasn’t even got a month for them to sort it out. Also VRR shouldn’t cause what u just showedw with mafia 3. A software optimization should fix that. Most of our displays never had vrr it’s like a 2 year old technology. It’s meant to reduce screen tearing - nothing to do with smoothness. So u should give it a few months so u can have a fair comparison.

As for mafia, you are playing on 1200p on the go and 1080 on the ally. Which is not an equal comparison. But what you are right in is that if you want the best windows handheld right now, then the ally is the winner for sure. But I really think that the GO will be the better system once they optimize their software and add a lot of the features you are talking about. Minus the VRR of course :) by that time, the ally 2 might be out so there is that too.

As I said before, all that matters is having fun, however, I don't get why Ally users are so damn toxic, you can see plenty of people on KZbin channels comparing his toy against Steam Deck arguing with huge power, now that Lenovo Legion Go it's as powerful and has better battery life (something important for a handheld) now the problem it's the damn speakers or vrr, but they don't talk about Asus support or burned micro SD cards. I got my Ally refunded and got a Steam Deck mainly because I travel a lot and some powerbanks are not allowed on planes. If I was going to spend 800$ I would go with the Lenovo Legion Go without a doubt, yeah VRR is cool, great sound too but the tweaks you have to do to have a good experience, the damn bios, battery... Doesn't make me wanna buy again a product for them, and even wasting the same amount of money as the Lenovo Legion Go, they don't include a case, come on people, I know that some games looks awesome on the Ally but you can't argue me that returning Lenovo just for the speakers it's justified, it's not a single month since it's release, I'm sure that they're working to tweak things up, you have to be stupd or low on cash 😐

Its a little unfair to compare fans in this way since the ally does not boost the fans until the system is under load, As an ally user I can say the fans do get pretty loud under load, as soon as you put load on the system in fact Asus locks the fan 1 speed to 70 percent as a solution for the SD card issue. For sure it looks like the legion go fan is crazy though, even with no load that thing goes crazy. For me all the windows handhelds are unrefined though, I’ve been using an ally for 6 months and have left my deck on the shelf and yes gaming on the ally was better, but not because it’s more powerful but because it’s a better visual experience. The reality with these windows handhelds is yes they are more powerful but they are not powerful enough, AAA games still struggle, you still need to reduce resolution much of the time, still need to reduce settings and the trade off to having that extra performance is you get more noise, more heat and less battery. Indie games are what shine on all these handhelds and for that reason I’ve decided to drop the ally, ignore the legion go and just order a OLED deck, when playing the games that really shine on these handhelds the deck is still king, way better software, better community support within steam itself, custom control schemes etc, much better efficiency so games like dead cells for example can play at stupid low wattage that windows handhelds just can’t reach and stay stable so you get much better battery life and less heat and noise…. Then valve dropped the OLED… improving almost all the deck downsides lol I just dont see why I should keep the ally, the software has improved but it’s still tacked on like all windows handhelds, it still has issues like keyboard pop up blocking things on screen, armoury crate responding slowly at times, no small details like battery life expectations etc, they are just so unrefined, valve really just know what they are doing. If I had a choice between ally and legion go I would probably choose the legion go but after seeing all the issues like dead zones and that fan, jeez, the windows devices just dont have that magic do they.

@@InitialFailure yup I do enjoy them, hollow knight is great, ori is great, games like hades are great, rimworld is great, virtual pool 4 awesome in handheld, persona 5 awesome in handheld… the list of amazing indie games is nuts and they run amazing on handhelds… So while people struggle to play Alan wake 2 and cyberpunk on a deck or ally at toilet settings I’ll play those games on my 4090 pc and all the games I ignore on my pc like those above I’ll play on handhelds. There is no “best option” for AAA games in the handheld space because every handheld on the market today struggles with them, low settings, low resolution, low framerate… the 7840u/z1 extreme are not powerful by any stretch of the imagination, they get floor wiped by most cheap laptops so for me… if you are realistic with what you play on handhelds you can have an amazing experience… or you can go toilet settings in AAA games and pretend it’s amazing to be getting 40fps.

@jinx20001 it IS amazing to be getting 40 FPS on a AAA title on a handheld regardless of settings. It IS underwhelming to get a mobile game (indie side scrollers) to run on a Deck. To each their own, my friend. You do seem to be more obsessed with maxing out settings for the sake of making out settings rather than playing games. We have a 4090 mentioned but nothing about the rest of the build, using a Deck to play mobile games but poo pooing Ally/Go. Ever see Flashgitz PC Master race? It might feel like a personal documentary to you. Edit: I missed Persona being "indie" to you, lol. Stretch before you make that reach or count Cyberpunk2077 in, too 😀

@@InitialFailure well obviously we have different standards on what is amazing. I don’t think 40fps at 720p low settings is amazing. A game being a side scroller does not make it a mobile game, many of which a purpose built for pc/console gaming, you equate mobile gaming with visuals alone clearly but then say it’s amazing that AAA games running at 40fps is amazing knowing full well you have to degrade setting quality most of the time to get there… settings mind you that are so low they would likely work on a modern mobile phone, how ironic. I also find it ironic that you say it is ME obsessed with maxing out settings rather than playing games when I am the one advocating for indie titles here while you “poo poo” them off because you believe they are mobile game rubbish… so clearly it is you that does not play games and focuses on AAA trash only, and thats what the AAA gaming space is… trash, go back to enjoying modern warfare 3. And I mentioned persona not because it’s an indie game but because it’s clearly a stylised game not focused on looking the best it can be… a similar game would be sifu… both of which run amazing on handheld. Indie covers much more than “side scrolling” lol Also I’m certainly not shitting on the rog ally here… I own one, what I am doing is pointing out that AAA games are clearly not designed with weak mobile hardware in mind and that is what handheld hardware is today, it’s categorically weak… it’s the best we have ever had absolutely and it’s amazing we can play any game we want on them… it’s a leap over mobile gaming of yesteryear when the psvita had to have games specifically made for it as it couldn’t run the full game of that day… so yeh, it’s all great I’m just saying there is more to it than power, way more to it.

@@jinx20001 yea, it's ironic that you aren't amazed to see a AAA title run at 720, 40 FPS on a handheld-again, a hand held, yet are enamored to play what could have come out 20 years ago and see that as a feat. Yes, that is ironic. Yes, side scroller indies can be played very easily on cellphones as they have no issues running on a Retroid Pocket that is effectively an android device, i.e., a cellphone. You mentioned Persona because you needed to strengthen your argument beyond a 2D sidescroller but forgot that Atlus is as "indie" as CDPR. Gotta be careful and not hurt yourself when you make such reaches. I guess my question is, why doesn't a AAA game running on a handheld not fascinate you? Is it because it's too mainstream now? Did you get the Deck "before it was cool"? I'm not trying to sound mean, your argument just doesn't make any sense.

From all the videos I've seen so far the biggest problems and deal brakers (for me at least) are: lack of VRR, the display is by default in portrait mode, it's quite big and heavy, controllers can be wobbly and loose depending on the unit you have, button placement is infuriating...you can't hold the console properly without accidentally pressing a button somewhere that opens/closes/messes up something.

I have a gaming laptop i use for competitive fps games, i bought a handheld pc expecting to be a able to comfortably play casual fps in bed, now im debating getting a lap pad to play with lenovo fps mode in bed?? Not great. I wont say its bad.. but these sticks need work asap and it seems like it wont be fixed by the 11/30 update. There's no advantage to either device; there's only preference. I like the portability of both, but I prefer a bigger screen. Bye-Bye ROG!! BA! Also, yes...out-the-box the LEGO is half-baked, but if you have a "bakery" at home, the updating, tweaking, and tinkering is tolerable, low key enjoyable, and worth being patient. Both devices have had, and have, their issues during their first six months after release. The LEGO is just starting out, the ROG has been out for five-ish months. We will see where the LEGO is at come March/April 2024. Lastly, I prefer the OEM color of my handheld gaming console to be BLACK [even though I will eventually purchase a dbrand skin or two]. Both are great devices. I wonder if both Lenovo and Asus will follow suit with Steam Deck and release a refresh in a year or so...
