What type of respect is this? Those who see this respect would not believe that it is just "respect" but worshipping them. Do worshipers have in mind primarily the person represented by an image, or are some images viewed as being superior to others? The attitude of worshipers is an important factor to consider. Why? Because a key difference between an “image” and an “idol” is the use to which an image is put.
