You kinda missed the mark (in a reversed way) in the 1st and 2nd halves of the movie. When he was wooing Rita the first time it was for completely selfish reasons. After he tries to kill himself he begins to show signs of actually becoming a more caring person. When he speaks to Rita while’s she falling asleep he talks about wishing of becoming worthy of her. That’s when things start going right for him.

🤔 It's interesting. You seemed to give Phil more of a "pass" in the first part of his journey than I've seen from most other reactors, but then you were harder on him in the back end than they were.

I thought the mentioning of his bad behavior became tiresome. It was obvious early in the film that he was that sort of person. I almost felt as though there was some resentment of men going on here. I would have liked to have heard more commentary on the comedic aspects of his journey. I don’t understand how she thought this occurred over only a few days. He learned to play jazz-piano like a pro, ice sculpt, etc. One of my all-time favorite movies.

This was filmed in Woodstock, IL... a little northwest of Chicago. A few years after the film was made, the town began to have it's own Groundhog Day celebration similar to Punxsutawney, PA. It's a week of festivities.. dinners, dances, trivia nights..and viewings of the movie in the local theater. They have little markers all over the town square indicating certain scenes... "Ned's corner" "Bill Murray's pothole" etc.

The Insurance guy, Steven Tobolowsky, really deserves a lot more love. He has nearly 300 IMDB credits. OMG, he just shows up in everything. Somethings he may only have two lines but he kills it. He's really good at quirky characters. "Thelma and Louise, Mississippi Burning, The Goldbergs, The Grifters, Baswic Instinct, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He's been in so much stuff Can I get an Amen for Steven Tobolowsky. No, I am not Steven Tobolowsky.

Groundhog Day is one of my favourite films of all time, and I've seen it lots of times. I enjoy it so much, I re-watch it every February 2nd! I've always liked Bill Murray anyway, and this film is a lot more complex that it at first appears. There are so many layers to this film exploring themes about time and eternity, death and destiny, choice, self-realisation and development, etc, yet there's also romance and humour in there and overall it's a wholesome, feelgood film. Phil goes from scared to self-indulgent to manipulative to desperate to depressed, but it was only when he learned to stop being self-focused and genuinely started to care for Rita and improve himself for the benefit of others that he was released from the 'captivity' of groundhog day. You mentioned Phil's actions being about an ego boost for him, but in fact that was how he was earlier, when he was 'faking it'. By the time he was saving the falling boy and helping the old ladies with their car, etc, he had actually changed and was being genuinely helpful and altruistic. If you watch the extra commentary on the extended DVD, the director Harold Ramis (who also plays the neurologist in the scene at 10:53) says that Phil was probably stuck in that same day for many, many years, although as with much of this film (like why it happened in the first place), it's left to the imagination of the viewer. Sadly, Murray and Ramis fell out during the making of Groundhog Day and didn't talk for years (which is why Bill is not in the 'Making of' features), but fortunately Murray relented and they made up just before Ramis died in 2014. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJWanJ6bmMunatk

There's a lot of SNL dna in this movie: Bill Murray (cast member 1977-1980) Brian Doyle Murray (Bill's older brother- writer/cast member 1978-1982) Chris Elliott (cast member 1994-1995)- (Chris' daughter Abby was also a cast member 2008-2012) Robin Duke (Doris the waitress- cast member 1981-1984) The movie's director, Harold Ramis, plays the neurologist. The man Phil meets in the hallway every morning was the Santa in Home Alone. Stephen Tobolowski and Marita Geraghty (Nancy Taylor) both appeared in episodes of Seinfeld.

He would cease to resemble a human being after that much time. The 35 years estimate feels right. After 10,000 years he would have befriended, slept with, married, murdered and eaten every man woman and child in that town. 10,000 years is not something a human mind can deal with.

Great reaction Amelia like always love this movie its a classic. There some fun-facts about it, While different times have been mentioned over the years, is subject of much debate, the time Phil spent in his seemingly endless time loop. Some have estimated that Phil spent a total of ten years in his cycle. However, Ramis (The Director) indicates that the time spent was more like “30 to 40 years.” The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray stepped here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. Bill Murray was actually bitten twice by Scooter, one of the groundhogs. The bites were apparently so deep that Murray had to received anti-rabies injections to prevent serious complications. Brian Doyle-Murray who plays Buster Green in the film, is actually the elder brother of Bill Murray. The two have previously co-starred in other features such as ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Ghostbuster II’. Keep up the good work.

I've heard estimates that he repeated the same day between 35 years and 1000 years. It's said that it takes 100,000 hours of dedicated practice to become an expert at any skill. Some people dedicate their entire lives to mastering one skill. Multiply that by the number of skills he learned: piano, ice sculpting, French language and poetry, medical, every gust of wind, the details of the lives of every resident, etc. Then add all the days he couldn't drag himself out of bed, or how often he killed himself, or robbed the bank, or just tossed cards into a hat, or tried to drive out of town as far as possible. My guess is the lazy days would be 10 times more than the dedication days. There's one mistake that bothers me, though. At the end, the piano teacher shouldn't know that he's her student. If he had bothered to go for a lesson on that day, she would have said there's nothing she could teach him because he's already an expert. More likely, he stopped going as soon as he learned enough to practice on his own.

6:36 "I mean, it's always six more weeks of winter." Yep. Because Groundhog Day is Feb 2nd and the last day of Winter is the Spring Equinox which can vary a little, but is always around March 20th, give or take a bit. So that's like six and a half weeks, literally, based on the calendar. I guess groundhogs don't bother too much with the extra half week.

"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter. From Punxsutawney, it's Phil Connors. So long." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Michael Shannon. Time Loop Fact: There are exactly 38 days depicted in this film, either partially or in full. The actual time Phil (Bill Murray) spends in his loop can only be guessed at. Art Imitates Life Fact: The idea of Phil Connors reading to Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) while she sleeps came from Bill Murray. His wife drank too much champagne on their wedding night and fell asleep early, so Murray read aloud to her until he too fell asleep. Location Location Fact: The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray Stepped Here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. There is another plaque on the building wall at the corner that says "Ned's Corner" where Phil Connors was continually accosted by Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky). During the Ned scene the sign for "Woodstock Jewelers" is clearly seen in the background.

Why did the old man always recognize him? Why did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math folks on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, and know the town so well, and everyone know him, he was in this loop over 30 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she WANTED to be with him. The doctor guy, Harold Ramis. He and Murray worked together since late 70s, with Ivan Reitman and Dan Akroyd. Ramis hated Murray for his stuck up, misogynistic ways, but they did make movie magic together, with this, Stripes, Ghostbusters and other movies. Lots of writing producing directing acting etc., movies with Bill. Such as Stripes, Ghostbusters 1-2, and others. It was a story originally written, very dark, and him being in the loop like 10,000 years!😮😮😮 Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman, reworked it to make it a bit funny! But u must ask urself? Did he really leave the loop completely? He's staying with rita, in the town he knows everything about, he's going to live there, everyone else knows him extensively...also watch his movie, Scrooged! or worse thought, what if he became the owner or master of his own loop, and now everyone else is in it?😮😮 The real trick is this, the story was written long ago, and much darker. It's a psychology study. Think of every character in this, on screen longer than 3-4 minutes. They all have very distinct and different personalities. Who are u? Hannah is unchanged start to finish, like Rita. And Ashe? Just go back and listen to his comments because he is very much bad Phil!

Amelia, i think it’s safe to say you work in “the biz” from your comments. However, never link G&E together, that’s disrespectful even though we work closely together. The grips are the knuckle draggers that try to get you onto their truck to party. Not us. We tend to be more nerdy and less “bad boy” like the grips. The electricians (aka Lighting technicians, as we are now known as) are the civilized, non-malodorous guys and gals. That’s how you can tell us apart when we’re grouped together.

Danny Rubin, the writer, said that, in the script, Phil relived the same day for 10,000 years. Harold Ramis, the director, tried to say it was less. However, since it isn't stated within the film, I go with the intention of the writer. He was the one who created the whole story. So I always go with 10,000 years regardless of any argument people try to come up with to say otherwise.

After 10,000 years, you’d think you’d have the time to learn everything. EVERYTHING. You’d be an oracle of knowledge in the other side.

Phil basically was. He learned everything about everyone in town. Also, in the script, the way he kept track of how long he was trapped was going to the library and reading a single page from a book each day until he read the entire library.

@@Joker_JAK Interesting - how'd you get a copy of the script? Is it out there? I bought Danny Rubin's book "How to Write Groundhog Day", which his brother (who is an acquaintance) recommended to me.

The part that is hilarious is that if he sees his shadow there is 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow it is a month and a half (which is ALSO 6 weeks) until spring! So in the end it is always the same, March 21st is always the first day of spring, whether it is snowing or if it is 75 degrees on that day!! 😉😉😊😊👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
