I miss those days too. Back then I could tell who or where the song was from after about 10 seconds of hearing the beat. Pretty much everything was in-house then. If there was a featured rapper on a song they would be from the same label most of the time. Of all of the producers from that era, I would have to say that Manny had the biggest impact on the modern hip-hop sound. He was really the first to move away from using the standard funk styled bass lines and sampled r&b hooks.

people always talked shit about Silkk...personally I like Silkk. His delivery wasn't "always" on point, but he had lyrics for days. He clearly had the best verse on this song and that's saying something because no one would ever think Silkk could out shine P, C, or Mia on the same song. I'd rather listen to Silkk instead of these weak rappers today. As a matter of fact I still bump "Charge it to the game" till this day.

I doubt their albums weren't mixed and mastered when they signed deals with Priority and Universal, respectively. Most artists are local until they blow up so your point doesn't make sense. Tupac and Biggie were local artists until they made it. They weren't an overnight sensation. Master P said one of the expensive parts of selling records was the packaging and he went against industry norms thus the cheaper album case and covers. Also No Limit has sold over 75 mill and Cash Money over 45 mill.
