My economics personal statement:
The documentary 'The Big Short' about the financial crisis of 2008 sparked my interest in Economics. It showed how Wall Street bankers predicted the housing market crash and shorted the bonds to make millions. The film inspired my extended project where I constructed and critically assessed arguments from different sources to investigate 'Was the activity of the Federal Reserve to blame for the 2008 financial crisis?'. An article in The New York Times that particularly interested me, 'Reagan Did It' by P. Krugman, explored how the deregulation of banks was to blame for the crisis. Consequences of 'Reaganomics' including rising inequality contributed, but it was the increasing debt caused by Reagan's fiscal policy that left the economy 'ill prepared' for the 2008 trouble. By studying finance modules as part of the degree, I hope to gain an even greater understanding of this event. I have really enjoyed studying macroeconomics in Economics, exploring how economies as a whole operate. Fiscal policy and the multiplier effect, Keynesian theories developed in attempt to understand the Great Depression, are of particular interest to me. In the BBC documentary 'Masters of Money', my attention was caught by a notion explaining why events do not always follow economic theory: 'Economies are made up of people not numbers'. For example the concept of inferior goods explains why demand does not always increase following a fall in price, although in theory it should due to the income effect and substitution effect. There will always be new theories developed in attempt to explain holes in the subject, which is why Economics is fascinating to keep up with and why I want to study it. Should economic growth be the government's key focus for the economy despite the environmental damage it causes? Questions such as these make me curious about the economics versus ethics argument. Although economic growth leads to a higher standard of living, disadvantages include pollution and rising inequality. I learned more about this topic by reading 'The Economics of Sustainability' by J. Farley, part of a book that covers many different perspectives on sustainability. The Economics section explores potential ways to ration scarce resources in order to preserve them for future generations to have a quality of life equal to or better than our own. Sustainability is becoming a priority in the modern world, reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals. I am looking forward to studying this topic in more depth as it is relevant to economic development, differing worldwide. Attending the KPMG Discovery programme gave me an insight into the finance industry. I worked on a restructuring project which involved using my A level economics in practice to advise a business that had recently been in the news for financial problems. It linked economics with business management, which is something that I have enjoyed in my DT theory work too - investigating cost cutting, just in time production and efficiency. I took part in the ICAEW Business and Accounting Competition where my team attended the national final. We worked together on a business management project which furthered my communication and presentation skills. Our team received a highly commended award, coming in third place out of fifty teams. My interest in Mathematics lead me to Economics as I recognise that Statistics specifically, is significant to the subject. This year I gained a silver award in the Maths Challenge and took an AS in Further Maths to gain skills in analysing problems logically and critically. I regularly read about topics linking Statistics and Economics on 'The Balance' including articles on loans and investment as I like to learn about how my A level theory work applies to real life. Global events such as the Great Recession make me realise how influential economics is. I am excited to watch it develop as the world changes, and for the challenge of studying this complex subject.

Hi Mia, this was so helpful once again thank you so much! Do you get access to the powerpoint slides of your lectures in advance so you can annotate them or something? Also, I really love development economics too and I was wondering if it’s a career interest for you, and if yes, do you know what related job roles there are? Sorry if this is confusing I’ve just done a lot of research to get an idea of what a career focused on development economics actually consists of and still not too sure. Thanks again for your help! :)

Ah lad, Leeds. I was born in Bradford (Bradfud LOL). I have lived in the US for a number of years and have my degrees from Pennsylvania State University. I go back to the UK fairly often to see relatives and friends. I went to grammar school years ago in England and my daughter got her MLitt in International Business from the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland so I'm familiar with the British system.

@turkishcookingmadeeasy7815

Dont listen to the guardians ranking. Bath is top 10 for economics, guardian value their rankings using a different metric, (they ranked stirling over lse) look at the complete university guide its 9th. Guardian value student satisfaction, research performance and employment percentages as high critea which may be less for bath, but not as much Starting salary post grad, entry requirements etc.

@Detsky but having econ at high school is a plus point. As miaalicex said, they don't teach basic econ clearly at uni it's true. Hi, I'm considering applying for Economics at university. I haven't been studying Economics at alevel. I'm studying maths, further maths and physics, so I'm assuming the maths side would be easier for me to pick up than it was for you, but of course I'd struggle with micro/macro economics, whereas you found that easy. My question to you is do they teach micro and macro economics as if you're first learning it, or do they treat it as if its just a quick revision of the alevel course? In other words would I be able to learn it while at uni easily enough or would it be advised to learn it all over the summer in between finishing college and going to university?

F.A.Y.E Maths is very very very important for economics, especially if you choose a BSc econ degree and not a BA. I did maths, further maths, English Lit and Spanish. Further maths isn’t necessary unless you wanna go somewhere like LSE but it does make the maths at uni easier but, as not everyone does it, they still teach you thoroughly. English or a subject where you do extended writing is important due the essays you have to write in an econ degree so I would choose something like English lit or something like history if you don’t want to do economics a level. I did Spanish because I enjoyed it. Economics a level allows you to write extended essays so if you don’t want to do something like English or history you can still pick econ. Hope this helps :-)
