The 'revitalization of the area' was down to the laundering of drug smuggling money which was used to build high rise apartments and hotels (with the blessing of the mayor at the time!)

Afaik the 2 testarossas were initially black. They repainted them because it was better for filming at night.
@stephenskgunter2 ай бұрын
Correct. The black Testarossa can be seen in the episode "When Irish Eyes Are Crying" which was used as the premier episode of Season 3 although it wasn't intended to be aired that early. This caused a major continuity error, because the black Daytona was blown up in this episode but appeared six episodes later. When Sonny receives the Testarossa in "Stone's War" he comments that the white car has "new paint".

Legendary. To the uninitiated, that years finale for season 3 was Sonny Crockett, after a drug bust gone bad massive head trauma, waking up thinking he was the last person he was undercover pretending to be. That's when Sonny Crockett goes full method and becomes his alter-ego Sonny Burnett. Just when you thought Don Johnson couldn't get any cooler. Sonny Burnett is a bad-ass. There is a lot of moving parts to this storyline. Because the Miami police department can't find Sonny after this drug bust gone wrong. They are caught in a quagmire. Because they can't go public in risk of exposing his cover to the cartel underground so have to do a missing person of one of their own completely covert and stealth not giving away Crocket's true identity if he's been kidnapped or held hostage as a drug competitor, not knowing the insanity of what's really going on: the Sonny thinking he really is Burnett , immediately starts rising up in the drug game as a natural born would be kingpin. The cutting back and forth between squad and the criminals, the cat and mouse game where the main baddie the squad are trying to hunt down who all their informants tell them is a ruthless cutthroat guy named Burnett is actually their own whom they are actively in a manhunt to desperately find and rescue, oblivious they are one of the same. Crocket's main man partner Tubbs gets a tip on Crockett's whereabouts and pursues the lead, arranging a meet up behind a club in the ally. Tubbs meets the contact in there ally who is really there to put a hit on him not knowing Tubbs is an undercover cop.Tubbs is shot down, left for dead, the hitman reveals himself from the shadows to be: Sonny Crokett, full scale amnesia, not knowing he's just attempted assassinated and looks to have succeeded his in real life partner that he's got no recollection of. Then cut to black. Credits. We fans had to wait the entire summer hiatus before the series premiere of season 4 to find out what happened and how far and long this would go. The resolve is epic, but the only disappointment was that the buzz with everybody during the hiatus was how long they would drag this storyline out and every one was on board with making Sonny his murderous alter ego the full season and not resolve it till the very end of the season. Because Don Johnson was incredible as the villain. And the idea of how as Burnett and Tubbs forced to recover from being shot by his parter, best friend, only man he trusts and having to be the one to have to hunt and take him down by any means necessary is the stuff of Shakespeare. But that plot got wrapped up in a two parter and was over. It was a missed opportunity. But the trilogy of episodes are classics and a mini movie in and of themselves. Don Johnson directed the third and last episode of this three show arc. The finale where Crockett as Burnett finds out from someone within his criminal enterprise that he's actually an undercover cop with proof from his interrogation of him and he manages to get the police interrogation footage is amazing and how Sonny escapes that near death situation to just accepting the truth who he really is and walking in cold weaponless into the Miami Vice squad room to turn himself in and the camera spins around from his face to reveal that the entire squad room of cops have their service weapons drawn and pointed square on Sonny, including all his cop friends and fellow agents. Just heartbreaking beautiful legendary work by all involved.

Don Johnson probably the coolest and best looking actor there's ever been... This should have been good forever. Edward James Olmos was great as their boss too. Crockett's theme is probably the song I've heard most in my life, I actually wasn't aware Jan Hammer made the intro music too. You left out one of the main reasons for the ratings drop in seasons 3 & 4. Showrunner Michael Mann left and Dick Wolf, of future Law & Order fame, was brought in. He changed the entire tone of the show. He toned down the colorful style and fashions, and basically more it more like Law & Order. Lots more gritty grey colors, slightly more conventional clothes, and made it a somewhat more generic cop show. To be fair, the writing may have improved a bit too, but that's not why people were watching.
@grannyweatherwax80053 ай бұрын
I also have a theory that part of the first season's style and success was due to Joel Surnow. He was rather young at the time and is credited as part of season one's writing team but I wonder what else he may have done as producer, because after just that one season he was given The Equalizer to run. But after that he created the highly stylized La Femme Nikita then 24, both of which I consider to have been just as revolutionary to tv as Miami Vice. Also season one to me is the most quintessential version of the show. YMMV

The movie was great - I really enjoyed it. It's bad ratings IMO are a product of people's inability to like anything that isn't operating at tik-tok speed. Michael Mann's movies always use pacing as part of the story telling and some people can't wrap their heads around that. One of the best parts of movies like Miami Vice, Blackhat, Heat, and Collateral is how Mann uses pacing to illustrate the lifestyles and/or personalities of the characters.I had a shirt I called the "miami vice" shirt when I was in school in the 80s - and my parents hated it. They would forbid me to wear it on picture day - so I would stuff it in my backpack and change into at school.
