Very easy Butterfly wrap top/shirt cutting and sewing | Even a beginner can make this shirt

I read a lot of comments asking for a larger size and never saw an answer, so I tried. As shown, this is a “one size fits all” garment, which doesn’t work for taller/heavier people. American here, but I’ll also include metric - I am 5’10” (177cm), 190 lbs (86kg) with a 43” (109cm) bust, 36” (91cm) waist, and 44”(112cm) hips. In American sizes I’m generally a size 14 or XL, but those vary depending on manufacture and the cut of the garment. When I make clothes, I add length to the bodice for both my height and my bust of a bodice to actually sit where it’s supposed to, even when the pattern is already for my “size” - as sizes usually care more about your roundness than your height, sizing up for me just creates a different set of problems. Here’s what I did: I sought to make my top 2” (5cm) longer and 1” (2.5cm) wider, and since I was using inches, I made my original cut of fabric 42”x40” (100cmx95cm). I cut the neck hole at 3.5” (8cm) radius from the video. Bottom of the shirt increased to 13” (33cm), curve from the shoulder to make the sleeve I kept at 17” (45cm), cut up from the bottom to meet the sleeve I increased to 7” (17.5cm). Pleats at bottom edges (front and back) I marked at 9” (22.5cm) and kept 1.5” (3cm) wide. I think everything else stayed the same, or used the same technique. COMMENTS ON CONSTRUCTION: - with a 3.5” radius neck opening, I needed roughly 25” (64cm) of bias (the diagonal cut of fabric”, so I cut 26” (66cm) to be safe. 25 would have been fine, but it’s good to add a cushion. - for the rolled hem on the sides, I don’t like making rolled hems (I find it difficult, Mia does it with ease!), but I have presser foot for it and you need a delicate hem, so if you can’t do a rolled hem, fold over twice as a small as you can. - 59” (150cm) ties for the bottoms will not give you enough for the front section to wrap around a second time to tie in front. If you want that (in which case both ties go in front) then you need to double the length. -- I think I could still add another inch (2.5cm) or two (5cm) to the bottom front and back and I'd feel a little more comfortable wearing it. FINAL THOUGHTS: I used cotton (an unused flat bedsheet specifically, but 100% cotton) and I don’t know if it’s the fabric or my body shape, but I’m not loving how this shirt works on me. Even tied loosely, it definitely sits on the waist and maybe I need extra high waisted pants to like where the shirt sits (my taller frame, ready-made pants I don’t think fit me as intended, I do prefer skirts). And it’s not the added measurements, I just don’t like how it lays but I will be trying other versions of this. So see if maybe it’s just this design. Maybe a lighter fabric (or a heavier-but-thinner?) would hang better on me? It also doesn’t overlap as much as I would like on the sides. I know the sides will be open, but it’s too much to feel comfortable in public and not enough to just wear a camisole underneath. I’m still happy I tried this design, it was easy and came together well, I’m sure it’s just my body shape it’s not working with. EDIT: tried something, pinned the sides about 9" (22.5cm) up and then tied fronts to backs - I like this better. Assuming I can take this off as-is (pinned) I'm going to stitch sides together so that it's no longer a wrap top, leave the ties to dangle and tie-up decoratively instead of functionally and I think I'll wear this shirt. I am still going to try other butterfly-wrap styles out there.

I remember in the late 60’s -early 70’s making the wrap skirts and “granny dresses”. We wore the knee high boots and crocheted shawl. I’m68. I bought a pair of patchwork boots. My guy friends use to get me to embroider their jackets! Fun times!-Susan

I just started sewing and decided to make this. The video is very easy to follow! Made the shirt with the measurements named in the video and because im a western woman with a long torso the sleeves end above my elbows, which i actually quite like, and the body itself ends around my waist. So its sort of a cropped top for me, which i do not mind! Im proud of what i made and will definitely make this again but larger :) Edit: i just made a larger version that was 60 cm by 60 cm folded quare. Neckhole still 10 by 8 cm. Sleeve 50. Bottom width 40cm instead of 30 from video. Etc. And now that i have this i actually prefer the look of the smaller one lol.

I am US size 14 top. I made this with a 60x60cm square (once folded). I made the neck hole 10x12cm (could have been smaller and I wish I cut the front deeper than the back. Cut the waist at 40 (instead of 30) and the body up 20 cm (instead of 15) but felt the 48 cm sleeve length too long so went back and cut off maybe another 6 cm. It hits just above my elbow now. I cut the strips for the ties much longer. 170x8 cm and 260x4 cm. For the pleats in the front/back I did 17|3|17|3|17|3|17. I did the hem around the neck wrong but it kinda works. And I'm still very confused how the waist ties get sewn on but what I did looked ok and tucks under anyways so you cant see it. Results: gapping at the side along my ribs; fixed by stiching about 2.5x.75 cm square along each side to hold front/back together (I pinned it while wearing it). Collar slides backwards and then feels like it is too tight to front of neck. The fit looks pretty good and I plan to wear the shirt. It's between crop top and t-shirt length. The corner rides up over my low back/hip area esp if I bend over. If I want to reach high overhead I have to do a quick sleeve pinch and pull towards my neck to get enough slack to lift arm way overhead but it stays there for a second if I needed to reach up repeatedly. TL;DR will wear, not planning to make again

You will need the desired waist measurement of the top (your waist + allowance to make you feel comfortable and the top to be slightly loose) and start from there. Add seam allowance and divide by 4. Then add 15-20 cm for the sleeve. This will determine the size of your piece of fabric. The 1/4 of your waist will replace the 30 cm, the length between the neckline and the edge of fabric will be the sleeve length (40 cm in this video). Depending on the size of your neck, you might want to adjust the 10x8 for neckline, but likely this would be 1-2 cm max, so can be adjusted after you cut the hole and put it over your head. If the neckline seems too small, ad 0.5-1 cm at a time to make it larger. Then follow the rest of the cutting. Hope that helps. Let me know if you try it.
