Independant of positioning, 57s are not for everything. It's not the case of being more or less modern sounding. There were always Ribbon mics that were used to record bright and textured sounds without making them harsh and gritty, but there are other dynamic mics that come close, with little tweak, and that's not the case with 57s. At the same pricing level, the i5 simply sounds better and doesn't make things muffled or grainy like 57s. The e609 is better (warmer) than 57s. I dare to say even the akg-p3s sounds way better than 57s, despite being 1000 times cheaper. Sm-57s are good for live purposes for being feedback resistent, and that's enough for me.

SM57s on the low end... KM194 a bit higher... I5 more sparkle.

This isn't a good comparison, sound of the amp changes a lot depending on mic placement. With the mics placed in such different places, this test is useless.

This is true. As little as a half inch can make a lot of difference...

The pictures are only illustrations. We used all mic same position when we recorded the sound.

mmmm for heavy rock, pain in the ears sound, still sm57. More general i5. KM184 out of budget. I go for i5.
