Boat Encampment, David Thompson stopped here when traveling the Columbia River in 1811. For many years, it remained a key stopping point on the Big Bend for fur traders making the journey through to Jasper house in the Rocky Mountains.
The actual Boat Encampment of 1811 that David Thompson stopped at was flooded when the Mica dam was built in the 70s. This encampment was used by fur traders , trappers, and gold prospectors for many years. It is now a national historic site of Canada.
As we head southbound on the Big Bend highway from Boat Encampment, we pass a boat landing with some logging tugs and a cable ferry. Carnes Creek was a site during the big bend gold rush but is now flooded by the revelstoke dam. The Big Bend region on the Columbia River in BC is a magical place with a lost history many times over.
