I was a greens keeper for 3 years while U of V the V stands for Victoria. The V also stands for the school pet name Vikings I worked at Royal Colwood. In Canada and all Commonwealth countries, if a direct member of the Royal family plays on the course and they like it, the designation Roysl becomes part of the name. All that for this. We had a three man team who had six holes each, and our first duty, was to swish the greens. We had about a twelve foot tool that looks like a whippy radio antena. We would swish these back and fourth on the greens to remove all the morning dew. For a couple weeks, surrounding the longest day of the year June 21. The first group off the tee was at 5.45am. Victoria is on Vancouver Island if you look at a map we are the big Island 7o miles North of Seattle and my Seahawks as the crow flies. There is enough light to play golf 17.5 hours a day. So much a great course which Is difficult at 6700 yards. When we let the rough grow it was so thick a fore caddy would be useful. We grew it out for a Nike tour event now, the corn ferry tour. The winner set the course record of 66. Pat 71 so 5 under. He won the event at 5 under. He followed the 66 with 72, 70 and 71. Only 2 other players broke par. The every hole is tree lined with 80 to 100ft pine and fur trees. Most of the greens are undulating but fair. The greens were running 13 so it was hard to find 4 different pin Placements. The Player who won his name was and is Hallot. He went on to win a couple of times on the PGA tour. At that time their were apx 15, 18 hole courses from Nanaimo south where I live on the southern tip in Oak Bay which us and 6 other municipalities. I put this in because I and we were greens keepers at Royal Colwood we were allowed allowed to play any course in British Columbia. Here is the best part for free. I was finished work by 3 or 3.30pm. I played 3 to 4 times a week. I stopped at the 3rd week of August because training for rugby started then the season opened the third week of September. I played at the elite level of club rugby. I finished playing rugby when I was 33. On a tour of Great Britain. We played two games in England one against the European club champions The Harliquns. My club mate at the Castaways played for the Harliquins he played with us. This was 1988 he was paid 500,000 pounds a year he also had a free house and car plus bonuses. After that we were in Scotland played golf at the St. Andrews old course and because I was a greens keeper for a designated Royal course I played for free.i had my handicap car and work ID we played one more course you Grant played at against Rick Shiels mate who was a former Europian tour player at the Walace golf course the home of Stableford scoring. I played golf for fun. Beer tastes so good on the golf course. I was a 6 handicap back then and back two years ago. Since then I have needed a few surgeries with 2 more coming up in a month. I will be playing, but with a cart for a while.i found Wallace very hard. The wind blew about 20 to 25 in 5 different direction so. We also had rain. The rough didn't look hard. My first effort came out almost dead left. I hope you get to read this. There is something wrong with my phone. I can't go back and fix errors. This might read like a pull hook. PS Granny worked in the kitchen when she was 16 and 17. She was so smart and funny We watched NH l hockey together our last game was in her 95th year Wr
