The main issue with a lot of people is understanding “trap shyness” and why, if you’re using traps, they stop working. It’s so important to pick up the traps as soon as a mouse is trapped

Tootsie Rolls are the best trap bait. Warm a little and mold it to the trigger. Malases based. More effort needed to clean the trap equaling more catches. Your point about emptying the trap quickly is VERY important.

The Victor traps that have the yellow plastic base have a sensitivity setting. The left side is labeled "F" for firm and the right side is labeled "S" for sensitive. Also, the best place to locate the bait on these traps is actually under the base, especially when using peanut butter or marshmallow fluff.

I use the traps with the all metal triggering-mechanism and tweak it into a hair-trigger..............kinda harder to set, but the trap goes off at the slightest touch. Don't let the metal trigger get rusty, the trap will not go off as easily, leading to stolen bait.

I bought 4 new classic Victor wooden mouse traps. Had a mouse problem so bad I could see them running during the day. I caught 1 after 2-3 weeks of being daily dilligentn with all the traps. The peanut butter bait would typically be gone from them too, and traps set off. And yes, I only put the bit in that bucket as describes (well, the equivalent, used the traps with the smaller metal trigger pad rather than big yellow plastic piece. At a house in another state, many years ago, the same traps worked brilliantly. I bought the Tomcat plastic traps, for the more recent issue, every day i had mice in it until I had no more mice. Just started getting them again in the summer. Saw one in the late evening. near a cabinent. I had a trap still set up there from winter, with old bait, looked in the cabinent, and there was a dead mouse. I didn't think it could have been the same mouse, because I didn't hear a noise between seeing the mouse and finding the trap filled. Removed mouse, rebaited, next morning, another mouse was in there. Good chance that mouse had seen the prior dead one. And because of their nightly success rate last winter, I am pretty sure these mouse were not getting trap shock. So last winter I would check them daily, rarely did I hear the traps go off. And there was no problem catching new mice. I question the thing about the urine. Because if mice urine signals to other mice "here's an entrance into the home i've been using" (this may have been a different video by Green Akers), why would that same smell repel them on a trap? However, I do believe Green Akers. I have experience with mice in 2 homes. He has far more than me. But based on my observations on the same trap style working well in one state, and not in another. Also based on some of the different reports I'm seeing in this video from what I've observed irl. I think that what it shows are that mice are inconsistent. My advice, if you trap for mice, is to start what Green Akers advised, but realize that your mice may behave differently. Mine seem to have no trap aversion. I've only had my plastic traps half a year, but I will keep using them and rinsing them off between kills. I'm sure rinsing doesn't remove all the smells that mice can detect, but I will probably get extended life out of them. I won't replace them until they start working, but great advice to know that if they do stop, baked in odors could be why. Thanks for the advice video! I think it's great knowledge, I just wanted to express when I'd seen something different. And have no doubt that when I saw something different, there's a real possibility that I just have different mice, and that for many mice those things in the video holds true. Or holds true in their service area.

When I FINALLY got one to HOLD it went off when i tried setting it down. I was on another site where people were complaining about the SAME THING. Finding them impossible to set or going off when setting down. ANY IDEAS? I am disgusted with them and prefer the metal catch. Plastic too slippery?

Hey K. --- I had the same problem. I screwed the mouse trap on the end of a small board about 6-8 inches longer than the trap. i.e., length of a paint stirrer (only thicker). Control is no problem AND...if it's a larger rodent, it's not going to drag the smaller traps away. Hope this helps.

How do they get the peanut butter but don't set it off
@cbaxter65276 жыл бұрын
The mouse licks from the side for the yellow plate design. They must put their full weight on the yellow plate to depress it and trigger; hence the bait must be hard to remove. Also, if they come from behind then they are not standing on the trigger and may remove all the bait. I use the Victor version with the plate lifted only 1/4", I hear Tom Cat versions lift high and are less sensitive. I caught one the other day with rancid peanut butter; it was eating stale cheap chocolate coating from a hard softcream center (what a pig?). It was caught across the palm of its front limb shattering multiple bones. I had to dispatch the critter using an empty deep spaghetti sauce can. Green Akers is correct; you must check traps when you hear the snap. It is not always a head or spine kill. By the way, there was a big bite from the stale peanut butter. They don't seem to be picky eaters; maybe Reese's should make super tiny peanut butter cups.

I have found no matter what food or where I place the traps, that method doesn't work. The mice eat or take away the food, but don't trip the trap. My greatest success has been the sticky/glue traps. Reviews have stated that you can hear them trying to escape, I haven't experienced that. Easy to dispose of. I've taken a broom, stuck it in the glue, lifted it and shook it inside garbage can. I don't have to look at it OR touch a trap. Works for me.

The Times Up mouse trap is worth a try, IMO. I killed 58 mice in 2021, and I've killed 54 in the 5 weeks since I retired my old traps. Placing traps inside a tunnel, which only allows mice to approach the trap head-on makes a huge difference. Mine are made out of scrap timber, with a 1/2" hole to only let mice inside, and to keep unwanted animals out (like cats sticking their paws inside). A very good bait to try is egg mayonnaise.

I found THAT THE MICE WILL GENTLY LICK THE PEANUT BUTTER GENTLY OUT OF THE 'BUCKET'. Sometimes it does catch a mouse, but not all the time. BUT if you lift that little V shaped piece of plastic on the pedestal and JAMB a half of a peanut UNDER that V piece of plastic, and also smear a little peanut butter in the 'bucket' and on that half of peanut UNDER the V plastic, it will rarely be touched by a mouse without the mouse becoming a victim. A reason to NOT place the TRAP the way the announcer says, with the pedestal closest to the wall, that when the mouse does 'spring' the trap, the spring will send the trap flying in the opposite direction, and will actually move the trap away from where the mouse is standing, missing the mouse and also feeding the mouse. but with the pedestal away from the wall, when the spring is sprung, the wall will stop the trap from flying away from the mouse. Naturally, if ya got pets that like peanut butter, dogs and birds, then place the trap where they can't get at it, very painful. I would say that poison should never be used, just too dangerous to other animals.

I've seen plenty of mouse trap videos and mice don't give two shits about a dead mouse near by. You have two traps they'll eat the bait of the one that already killed a mouse then go set off the other trap trying to get more. I've concluded mice are some of the dumbest animals around and only exist today cause they multiply faster than rabbits.
@GreenAkersPC7 жыл бұрын
I guess you have not heard of trap shy mice? A lot of people haven't. I can guarantee that mice do understand when a dead mouse is on a trap and they do indeed understand the trap will kill them if it killed another.
@PhoenixPhire227 жыл бұрын
Can you explain Shawn Woods videos where he is often setting up traps that catch multiple mice? The mice just climb over the dead one and eat the bait. Or they'll check out the dead one sniff out the bait but can't get it an lo and behold there's a second trap set up and it proceeds to get the bait there and it gets caught. Just the other day he set up one that caught 4 and each one ignored the previous dead mouse. I've heard of mice being trap shy after a trap fails to kill it but based on spawns videos, mice don't give two shits about dead mice. Rats on the other hand though... Yeah different story

Honestly I had never even heard of Shawn Woods until I made this series on baiting and trapping mice. I don't know what type of video cuts or information he gives to people but mouse trap shyness does exist no matter what some youtuber has claimed....For some reason he is peddling amazon affiliate links in his descriptions and it would seem that it is in his best interest to sell mouse traps not be truthful about baiting and trapping them. It is a source of income for him so this is why he does it, or claims these traps he sells work.
@PhoenixPhire227 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t doubting you I was just curious your explanation why his don’t care. And he’s not claiming this, he shows video footage of traps at night going off. He put one up the other day that caught 4 in one night in a trap he made that was designed in a book over 400 years old and the mice just ignore the dead ones and set off the next trap. I’m not sure if he just has so many mice in the barn that it’s just inevitable another mouse will come along... but his mice don’t seem care bought the dead ones.
