I was a novice Club Kid briefly. I attended NYU during the late 1987-1988 semester. Unfortunately or more fortunately, I ended up partying too much, my grades suffered and my parents made me come back home. This was a blessing in disguise because I was basically drowning in various chemicals. Had I stayed in NYC I have no doubt that I probably would've ended up dead and dumped in an alley somewhere from an OD. I regret that I pissed away my chance to graduate from NYU but overall I don't regret the experience. It was a whole vibe and we bounced between the Danceteria, Limelight and the Palladium. Michael Alig and James St. James were well known but this was several years before Andre "Angel" Melendez was murdered. Fun fact: I met (famous designer) Isaac Mizrahi when he was young and starting out. He had long hair and I thought he was gorgeous. He broke my heart when he told me he was gay. Then we became best friends for the Winter. 😂

Girl. We’re the same age. I dreamed of NY but stayed in the Midwest until I studied abroad and tasted European night life. We would have vibed. Isaac Mizrahi, how amazing. Idk about NY but I was hard pressed to find a straight club boy.
@deniece0821 Жыл бұрын
@@glauvie Oh wow, being in Europe would've been so fun! YES!!!! You are so correct about not being able to find a straight male club kid. That's precisely why my friend and I would hit the punk/metal clubs/bars occasionally. We would occasionally go to CBGBs but it was expensive and very hard to get in. We were only 18/19 and they were pretty strict about only letting in 21 and over. We had fake IDs but they still would deny us sometimes. Back in '87/'88 it was incredibly easy to get into clubs/bars and drink but CBGBs was really hard. I'd heard a rumor that they had recently gotten busted for serving underage drinkers and had also busted a huge drug (cocaine) operation. The word was that CBGBs was being watched constantly by the FBI/ATF and the owners were under investigation. If all that was true, it's probably why they were so strict about who they let in there. There was a cool punk/metal bar/club out in Queens on Myrtle Ave called Ace's. We would head out there quite a bit. Especially if we were looking for straight guys. 🤣 It's so funny because when I came back home my parents were PISSED at me...and rightly so. After they calmed down about it all my dad confessed that he wasn't worried about me hooking up with some asshole and getting pregnant. I asked him how was he assured that I wouldn't and he said "Because, every guy you hang around with is queerier than a $3 bill. I'm actually grateful to them."🤣🤣🤣 Of course that isn't a very PC thing to say but was very common back in the '80s. My dad actually was not homophobic He was just a bit raunchy with his language. 🥴

Wow, I have a lot in common with this person. Went to FIT, met a club kid, started going out, dropped out of college and worked in and helped promote clubs. Went to many of those clubs that you mentioned (was different on the anti-drug part). Very glad that's as far as the commonalities went though, obviously.

when i first saw you post this yesterday i got excited + then immediately sad. as a Queer Millennial i know this story + many, many of the players well (know of, i mean....not...personally 😅). so, i was excited you were covering it (plus, i saw the club kid look. LOL) but then immediately sad for Angel. 😢 although, i think i been saying Alig's last name wrong this whole time. 😬🤦🏾♀ so...there's that. whoops.❤ thanks for telling a bit of Angel's story. from what i've seen, a lot of folks who tell this story give almost none of Angel's background + seldom mention that he had family who loved + missed him + came looking for him. RIP Andre Angel Melendez 🖤✊🏾

Fun fact! Illegal raves only became illegal in the UK in 1992. I started getting involved in them in 2003. We used to send out a text message at around 10pm on Saturdays telling people the location (warehouse, forestry commission track, random field in the ass end of nowhere) and hundreds of people would show up! No exaggeration. It was AMAZING until the legal crackdown in around 2010. Wounded. It was a great moment in time. Lot of great music. Lot of GREAT people. Most of us have moved on to festivals/clubs etc. Sad. But that's why I'm working as a bouncer/security guard now. That's my villain arc. God bless the Club Kids for kicking off the movement! We owe you everything! Understatement....but, shame Alig was such a fkup. It absolutely had a MASSIVE effect on the rave scene internationally.😞 ... sorry for the super long post but the spawn of this movement was literally EVERYTHING to me. I miss what it was.😢

Anyone interested in Michael's "club kid looks" should watch the documentary on Lee Bowery....very interesting person and very creative! Michael basically stole everything from Lee.... p.s. my roommate in college had a poster (very gory) from one of the parties that Michael promoted in NYC.

Awesome demonstration of doing self-makeup while expositorily relating a gruesome tale. I am a painter/guy who spent 20 years living in Manhattan/Brooklyn and remember Limelight well. I remember so vividly entering that church the first time with such a sense of a negative foreboding aura. My friends were the architect for the China Club and Limelight, and "dance raves" organizer, ( "The saturday night love Flights"), So, I have never understood how women apply this "body painting" and was fascinating to see you apply aesthetic choices on a secondarily concious level, while articulating a lateral and primary tale. Bravo, if you ever visit LA send an email, would love to hear your take at a studio visit.

I watched a documentary, and then i found Michaels KZbin channel and I did watch for a while here and there and I don’t remember if it was on Facebook or KZbin that he posted a video that you can tell that he was just high out of his mind. It was like 2 o’clock in the morning and he was live like cleaning his apartment and things he was talking about I just didn’t make any sense it was actually kind of really sad.I doubt that video is still up but it’s really sad that he was doing really well at rebuilding his life and drugs just took a hold of him again..
