Yes, the psychological wound that needs to be healed by the reunification of Taiwan with the mainland is there. However, given the US's belligerence that emerged ten years ago, and currently growing, for Taiwan to become genuinely independent would be an existential, military threat to China. That's a no-brainer.

Well my take is, China will not resort to military action unless, Taiwan formally declares independence. They were close to do this back then, and the one that put immense pressure to abort it was the US. Xi said said to Biden during their conference that "We are in no rush to resolve the cross-strait situation/question." That means the military option is currently taking a back seat. The perfect scenario, as Anton said, would be the HK and Macau scenario.
