I think Michael Biehn's a victim of his own success. He is so convincing as a normal human being, that he is thought of as a regular guy. In all his roles, he brings authenticity, vulnerability, and sincerity. In his most noteworthy performances, he had a strength in his character performance, despite his all too human weaknesses. As a leading man, I think audiences have become accustomed to unshakeable stoics, who always have an answer and will always make the right choice. Audience members are drawn to this archetype, because we all wish we could be that strong and composed at all times. As a Michael Biehn fan, I can say my emotional investment in his most famous roles, is not because he is an infallible Superman. The emotional resonance I feel about his characters, is that they remind me of myself in some ways: afraid, weak, unsure what to do, hesitant, hopeless, insecure. Essentially, all the supposed negative traits all human beings have, but that a typical screen hero does not show. Michael Biehn's characters were the antithesis of the classic leading man definition. But that's why I love his performances, because I am the character he is playing in every role I see of his. Not too many actors can do that. Only a highly skilled thespian can pull you into a movie and make you feel as if you are his character, experiencing the events of the movie. Michael Biehn is a great actor. I hope to see him in more prominent roles that will showcase his talent.

I saw an interview with Michael, and he explained that hé was in rehab, multiple times. He was/is an Alcoholic. Very honest and very shy, and kind and loving. I think indeed, that it was never his goal, to become a Hot movie star! Hé Just wanted to act, and stay normal. But we all know, that's not gonna happen in that business! 👍 🙏

I couldn't agree with you more. For example when I first saw the deleted scene between Sarah and Kyle in T2 my jaw was on the floor. The emotion portrayed by both actors in that scene was palpable, it was astounding. He's a fantastic actor and clearly commits deeply to every role he undertakes. I guess some actors don't get super lucky with finding the best part for them to really drive them onto bigger and better things - at least we can enjoy the work he has done. Great video.

Great video! I'm quite young myself, 18 years old, but I love the classic films thanks to my dad and I love learning more about them. I just recently rewatched Terminator and I found myself captivated by Kyle Reese the most even though all of the characters are amazing. I also remember watching Tombstone a lot as a child and funnily enough I had a crush on Kurt Russell and Michael Biehn's characters (being a woman)... He's underappreciated indeed! He and his character was the key (she was also critical) to the greatest romance I've ever seen in a movie that was not. (And you could add that 'love for humanity' was driving his character, in regards to the mission and her too.) Gale Ann Hurd and James (producers) hit it out of the park with T 1, girl!

Michael Biehn and Bruce Willis could both embody a realistic action hero archetype that was both strong and sensitive making them more believable and relatable than the more "action figure" type of action heroes of the era. But having said that, John Rambo fits that description too since his trauma is part of what makes him the way he is, not unlike Kyle Reese. Anyway, as an '80s kid, I wanted to be "just like Mike." In the early 2000s, I found a Vietnam War-era US officer's rain coat at an Army surplus store, so I bought it and wore it whenever the weather permitted. It was exactly like the one worn by Kyle Reese and Colonel Trautman. But I've never done a full-on Reese cosplay.

Just to add, I think "First Blood" really separates itself from a lot of the other action movies of the '80s, in large part because of what you're saying here. There's that element that the first one had, that the sequels obviously didn't, not to mention other action flicks that came after. It's a great movie, and I don't get why the critics back then weren't crazier about it when it had first come out. Thanks for sharing Judson!

For me, Kyle Reese was the highlight in Terminator. He's flesh and blood battling an unstoppable cyborg while risking life and limbs protecting Sarah Conor... I was gutted when he sacrificed himself so heroically. I think Biehn was rated by many, and certainly appreciated too, just that he is very low-key and reserved, not the flashy and loud type.

I became a huge fan of Michael when I saw Terminator somewhere in 85/86 and he is indeed underrated. But he is also a good writer/director by judging his own movie The Victim which I saw yesterday. And those shoes in Terminator, when I saw that, I immediately ran to my closet and grabbed them out, I had the same ones and started wearing them again.......LOL!!

Well,one big reason why Michel Biehn didn't become a big movie star was,well,he had a very heavy drinking problem.Watch the movie ALIENS and in the film,the Sargent says,someone wake up Hicks.Well,that was an inside joke because Biehn was passed out drunk and the other cast knew he was a heavy drinker. Sigourney Weaver even made a joke.She saw Biehn drunk and made a joke/observation and said,sarcastically...That's my leading man?Now,over the years,he got control of his drinking problem.

A good video! I recently had the pleasure of meeting Michael with a little small talk a couple of times in Tombstone. One stand up friendly guy. He’s quite the western historian as well. One of my all time favorite actors along with James Woods and Christopher Walken. His acting will be appreciated for years.

Yeah, I think Biehn worked well, because he was a believable hero. What he lacked in muscles, he made up for in leadership, decisiveness, and courage. He’s the perfect soldier in a sci-fi environment where the biggest obstacle is your fear of a killing machine. In T2, Reese is a superior hero to the T-800, because you do understand that Reese can feel. If the T-800 dies, but John Connor and Sarah live, then the mission is accomplished and it’s not sad. When Reese dies in T1, it is a sad ending, because he surely wanted to have a future with Sarah and it seemed like he deserved after everything he had done.

I can't agree with you more. He's got the looks, is a real character player, and a great, underestamaded, actor. His roles are Brilliant. Pe, Grease, Kennicky (Jeff Conaway), and ofcourse Michael Biehn! Though Johnny got famous, and Lorenzo Llamas a tiny bit, but nobody saw Jeff and Michael. Like you said, most iconic films/roles! As you pointed out there were no weapons until the end .my favourite qoite from Alien 3 " this is a Maximum security prison and there no weapons of any kind 😮" Michael sued the film makes beause his image in Alien 3 .He didn't get get paid. I loved him in Thombstone one of best performances . Seen the movie so many times his performance stands out as the best . I will have check out his other performances that did in fantastic video. I imagine you’ve seen the “Special Edition” of Terminator 2? Biehn’s brief cameo as Kyle in that dream scene was actually pretty decent and one of the few scenes I felt could have stayed despite the rest of the added scenes not really doing much for the film. I definitely still prefer the 1991 theatrical cut though which I only watched a couple of years after first watching T2 a couple of years before on my DVD copy which was the Special Edition.

Michael Biehn shouldve been a bigger star. He was so great in The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss and Tombstone. As talented as Michael is, he was also just as handsome as any other major star. Hey. Dont trash Terminator 2 for not having Michael Biehn. He died in the first film. Michael didnt die unceremoniously in The Terminator as he did in Alien 3. The Terminator was the Star Wars for my generation. T2 is the Empire Strikes Back for me. You could say that Michael and Mark Hamill have had similar careers. Mark is only known for 3 or 4 roles just as Michael is best known for 3 or 4 roles. At least, Michael never screwed up his face.

I agree with all your points, and I too didn't care much for T2 because Biehn wasn't in it. He made Aliens turn out the same way for me too, and it made me very angry when they excluded him in part 3. Maybe it was for the better since for me it's a very forgettable movie. His being in it would have probably made it better I think.

I had no investment in the non-Ripley characters in that movie, yet I was invested in everyone in Alien, as well as at least a few of the marines in Aliens; to go with all of the other key players in that movie. Interesting take. He reminds me of Sam Rockwell. And maybe if Biehn, as Rockwell has, had gotten a greater variety of roles, his career would have blossomed...I remember him in an episode of HILL STREET BLUES, as a nasty cop who goads a sensitive rookie into having sex at a stag party. (The rookie, who commits suicide, was played by not-yet-star Tim Robbins.)

All they had to do was make Michael Biehn the bad terminator in terminator 2. They could have said that terminators were infiltration units made to look like known soldiers of the resistance. And this one happened to look like Reese. And why let hicks live in aliens only to kl him off in the third film. The rule should be that they never should make a sequel without bringing back as many characters as possible.

He’s not underrated and underappreciated, many enjoyed him on the big screen, he’s a top guy, and a top B rated actor, not A, Sigourney etc were A…however he’s had his days in the sun with some great parts, notably Aliens, Terminator, The Rock, so should look back with much pride, luck and appreciation, as I’m sure he does.

I was isolating his earliest work, through to the blockbusters that he appeared in up until the '90s. He certainly did - and is still doing - a lot of stuff after The Rock (1996); which was the last movie that I'd referenced.

I think Michael Biehn in Terminator and Aliens and the Abyss has something only a few actors had. I’d say James Dean had it. Maybe Ryan Gosling has it. It’s the ability to just be on the screen and your eyes go to him. He communicates so much without even speaking. You’re right, he mysterious in an effortless way. Here’s my theory on why he didn’t have a bigger career. James Cameron is an unbelievably talented director. Michael Biehn just didn’t hook up with other great directors. And once he kind of fell into movies like say, “Timebomb” is was a wrap. It was saying that he’s a straight to video guy. I remember reading an article in the magazine Movie Line where he said he was going to play a role in the move American Me directed by Edward James Olmos. He lost the part to William Forsythe. I think had Biehn held out for some better quality projects, he may have transferred the momentum he had in the 80’s. But I think he’s a great actor.

I agree 100% with what you've said; "Timebomb" being a perfect example of that. "He communicates so much without even speaking." And I love the actors you've compared him too, specifically Ryan Gosling. I'm thinking of his movies "Drive", "Only God Forgives", "The Place Beyond the Pines", and "Blade Runner 2049", and Biehn not being able to play the other type of characters that Gosling was fortunate enough to play ("The Notebook" for example) that would show his range because I do believe he had some. But as for Biehn, you might want to check out the youtube video "Greatest Screen Hero's-Kyle Reese" another video that pays homage to Michael Biehn's subtle and nuanced acting. Yes, I think Biehn was trying to go between heroes and bad guys. I do think he was wasted in movies like "Navy Seals" and "K2". He was getting a bit of hype for a movie called "The Divide". I watched it for him. His performance was really good. Hes a great physical actor and always stayed in shape. But that movie was trying to be dark and I think just was depressing and kind of gross. I'm not quite sure what Michael has in store as he's about 66 now. But damn, Kyle Reese and Hicks live on!

I never saw "The Divide", so I'll be sure to add to the list of things to watch. It just blows my mind to think about how he was just sitting there, all of those years, and no one realized that they had the ideal action star who could carry a movie; and he's more than just an action star to boot. I think we're likely on the same page - depending on how old you are - but growing up playing with friends, if I can't be Han Solo or Indiana Jones, I'd be VERY happy playing the role Kyle Reese or Hicks. I'm currently in the process of upgrading my audio (set up) in my future videos - which has been disappointing and beyond frustrating trying to get it right - so I have a number of projects that I'm going to be releasing in the not-too-distant-future. My Boyfriend saw the movie TOMBSTONE, and he saw Michael BEIGN was in it and was going nuts as to where he was. But when he found out Michael played as "JOHNNY RINGO", To say he was blown away would have been an understatement. We have always hated the fact that every Movie Michael was in: He was killed off in each and every one of them.
