These guys sing with energy and sweet harmony. But the depth of Sinatra's Hamlet-like ballad interpretations ("wrist-slashers," or "suicide songs," he called them) can't even be implied by a cabaret act. Sinatra's genius resided in his ability to remove these songs from such ephemera and raise them to the level of timeless and universal art. When it comes to the up-tempo numbers, the word "swing" has vanished from the American vocabulary since Frank, the hardest-swinger of all, last had his turn at these tunes. Modern vaudeville-like treatments of Sinatra material substitute Welk-like "peppiness" for Sinatra's time-shifting, Louis-like execution ("the only singer who," drummer Sonny Payne once said, "made we WANT to swing"). Finally, when Frank sang Hammerstein or "Bess, Where's My Bess?" or "If You Are But a Dream" (in the '40s, '50s, '60s) his voice soared above the largest symphony orchestras and reached the highest and furthest balconies. Like Shakespeare (and Orson Welles) he was bigger than any TV or computer screen. Some former haters of Sinatra are kidding themselves if they suddenly think they "like" Ole Blue based on flimsy evidence.
@Robb33489 жыл бұрын
+caponsacchi Your perspective has a lot of merit, even though I do like the music on display here. You're right IMO about the issue of depth, Sinatra vs. these guys, and the "Hamlet-like" gravitas of Frank. You're also right IMO about the issue of swing or lack thereof. True swing is a spiritual profundity of temporal art, and is only superficially "peppy". To hear swing and hear only that it's "peppy" is a classic vulgar American "miss" of what's being conveyed. Thanks for clarifying that for me; as soon as you said it, I realized the truth of what you're saying. I love these songs, and I'm a big fan of Feinstein's, but I'll tell you a secret: what I'm really a fan of is his best work, his most soulful and most creative, which is, unexpectedly, on his CHILDREN'S album, "Pure Imagination", available here on KZbin. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. My theory is that, when he as singing for children he dropped several layers of masks and sang from the heart, from his own inner child. It's still perhaps saccharine, but it's redeemed by the fact that it's intended for children, where naivete is appropriate. Thanks again.

Feinstein has every right to be humble about representing "The Voice," "The Chair," "The Master Storyteller." Every singer and musician (including Feinstein, Criss, and Pizzarelli) who attempts to represent Sinatra does him injury unless he or she first comes to terms with the BASIS of Sinatra's singular brilliance: It was Frank Sinatra who, for the first time, made listeners take notice of not merely the singer and his or her vocal quality ("pretty voices" are a dime a dozen) but the song and its composer. That's why Frank Sinatra, more than any other single artist, "created" the Great American Songbook. Were it not for "Ole Blue," many of these songs (now referred to as "standards") would have suffered the same fate as the long-forgotten revues for which they were originally written by Rodgers&Hart, Harold Arlen, etc. You can't represent Sinatra by a mere half-dozen songs any more than you can capture the artistry of the Songbook without the high standards of interpretation and presentation introduced by Frank. Why do so few people understand that, in addition to the African-American art of jazz, this country can take equal pride in giving birth to the 32-bar American Popular Song (as unique as jazz, yet utterly inseparable from the music that improvises on "Standards" from the Songbook). Please, will somebody help finance a Ken Burns series on the American Popular Song (one composer a week, from Berlin hrough Jimmy Van Heusen)? (With a few notable exceptions--e.g. Duke Ellington and Cole Porter--the major songwriters have been Jewish-Americans.)
@Robb33489 жыл бұрын
+caponsacchi Again I agree with you, and want to highlight one of Sinatra's biggest contributions to vocal artistry, and that is his "speech-level singing." Early Sinatra sounds like all the other crooners, with a "singy" tone (e.g. a noticeable vibrato) and diction. Somewhere along the way, he came forth with his talking-singing, where it sounds, not like he's vocalizing or being a singer, but like he's telling a story, only the emotions have led him to the intensification of rhythm and pitch that makes it become singing. Every singer since him has been influenced by what he did there.
