2:35 I wasn't sure, seeing other videos of this performance, but this slowed / close up shot ... so does he have taps on the sides of that part of his shoes? ... Please forgive me for probably being inconcise as hell with terminnology). I wonder if taps being on that part of the ... platforms for the heels? is a modification or something that people partaking in the dancing this is based on can do that the hard shoes are capable of doing normally (again, I know little about this, and the style of dance Lord of the Dance and Riverdance are derived from, but am keen to learn).

The song/hymn Lord of the Dance was written in 1963 by Sidney Carter in England. The tune he chose is an old Quaker tune written in Maine in 1848 by Joseph Brackett called Simple Gifts. Sidney Carter was actually looking at a statue of Shiva (a Hindu God of India) who has the attribute translated as "Lord of the Dance" when he conceived of the song. In the UK Lord of dance has a copyright even though the tune it uses Simple Gifts also has a copyright. The tune sped up when it came to Ireland, and Michael Flatley and Ronin Hardiman presumed it was a long-time tune and tradition of Ireland. .
