According to the polls a lot of support was lost during partygate, another chunk was lost during Liz Truss, and more eroded away during Rishi Sunak's tenure. And the polls accurately predicted the final result, so I don't think there's any good reason to think that they don't also point towards the causes. With a result this bad, there's plenty of blame to go around, and the idea that you need to give a 'It was just due to X' explanation is childishly simplistic.
@timonsolus5 ай бұрын
Actually Rishi Sunak did a good job - when compared directly to Liz Truss. If Truss had not been replaced, and had remained Prime Minister until the election, I’m sure that the Tories would now have only 40 seats, not 120.
@tomcapping21365 ай бұрын
@@timonsolus I agree that things would probably be worse if she had stayed. My point is just that Boris and Liz and Rishi all did a good job of losing some support, that you can't have a result this awful without multiple problems, and most of all, that whilst you and I may have certain opinions on this person or that, or this policy direction or that, we don't need to guess how other people felt, as the opinion polls actually did a solid job of showing what things influenced what people.

Gove said "the elctorate moved away from us", but that's actually looking at it the wrong way round - to a large extent, the Tories became extreme: chasing ex-UKIP voters, moving to the right and deserting the middle ground. They moved away from their core electorate, traditional middle-class voters, and pandered to the right-wing and the think-tanks who don't want to pay any taxes, privatise the NHS and get rid of most benefits. You can still see this is the calls to ditch the EHCR, the support for the Rwanda plan, the possibility of Patel or Braverman becoming leader. Until they move back to the middle, they won't win a general election.
