I knew this symphony while driving in my car in '1980s, then I called the station to find out its name. There was only one CD at that time (CPO 999 101-2) by Slovak Chamber Orchestra/Bohdan Warchal. Lovely symphony. To me, It has more character than his brother's symphonies (Joseph Haydn).

The character is different, rather than more or less; Michael’s works were written for Salzburg, Joseph’s for Prince Nicholas at the Eszterhazy court - that made a difference. Michael’s symphonies are highly-professionally composed, and are unfailingly attractive works, but it’s better to leave out his brother in terms of comparisons as he really inhabits a different world. A better comparison would be with Mozart’s earlier works written whilst he too was still in Salzburg.
