I really admire players who take a standard instrument and throw all conventions out the window. Saw him one time in '89 and got to talk with him afterwards. I asked him how he managed to get what was in his heart and mind out through the guitar. He said, "I'm still trying to figure that out."

Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way to Heaven. We've all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins like lying, lusting, etc. Repent and trust only in Jesus, and you will be saved! You can be saved because he took the punishment for our sins on himself when he died on the cross, just like someone can pay your speeding fine in court, and you get off free. Saw him do this piece live at Norfolk, Virginia's "Waterside" outdoor venue back in the day and was totally mesmerized by both its beauty and his unadulterated passion for the instrument. Pure genius. He was equally good playing the harp guitar. Michael was very special and truly not of this world. I miss him and his music. RIP, Michael.

Old discussion but I'll add my 2 cents. For a wedding present in 1986 my wife bought us tickets to a Windom Hill Concert in Pittsburgh. There was Will Ackerman, Shadow Fax, Liz Story and Michael. After his set Shadow Fax came on. About 10 minutes in to there set I noticed someone had come down the steps and set down beside me. After a few seconds I looked over and it was Michael. He nodded and just listened for a while. Greatest present ever.

The first printing of the CD was misprint with liner notes from a different album. You knew there were other musicians on the disc (the fretless bass on one track is obvious), and you knew it was suppsed to be direct to two track. I was left guessing if this track was 2 or 3 guitarists. Then I saw him live and couldn't believe what I was seeing for the first minute or two.

Brilliant. The first time I heard this album (Aerial Boundries) was in 1984 and I was up all night long working on a project for college. It was featured on a local radio station with no commercials...I was awestruck and in a trance...It carried me thru to the morning sunrise and was so beautiful and inspiring. Still is!

Probably in part because he died so young (43), and in part because his music didn't fit a particular genre very well. He did win a Grammy posthumously in 1997 for Best New Age Album. I fell in love with his music when we happened to pick up a used Windham Hill compilation album at a music store in the 90s. I was in awe of what I was hearing.

Just some notes after reading some of the other comments... The actual performance was recorded on a sound stage without an audience, they did not use the Red Rocks performance, you can see he's dressed completely differently in the Red Rocks shots. It's mixed to give the appearance of a live performance. Several of the songs off of Live On The Double Planet were recorded on the same soundstage without an audience, although the performances were indeed "live." There's a good chance that Michael WAS stoned when performing, he was known to be a heavy pot smoker, especially back in those days. The middle-section of the song, which looks like it is the easiest section to play, is actually extremely difficult and involves lots of precise string-stopping technique. The flashy 2-handed parts at the beginning and end are the easiest to play.

I remember when he first started, we were living in Santa Cruz and they had a stations KLRS that played New Age before new age became known for mystic junk. All the artists were very very good. They played their best stuff from many new and upcomming music. We would here something and drive to SF to Rooks and Becords to buy. Still own many of those cds to this day.

actually he was WAAAY stoned when he recorded this for the album. Will ackerman recounts the event in the issue of acoustic guitar magazine featuring Michael on the cover that came out the month after Michael's passing. He said that Michael went for a walk on the grounds outside the studio and smoked the biggest joint that Will had ever seen and then went in to record.
