In Oct. 1989, Michael Jackson came to Gardner St. Elementary School in Hollywood for a dedication of the school auditorium in his name. Michael attended the school in his youth. This is the uncut version of the tape that went home afterwards with the students. It includes Michael's comments to the gathered crowd and his interaction with the kids in the classroom. I remember when this kind of media was ALL you ever saw of Michael Jackson. Awards, merit, charity unmatched. UNMATCHED. He was what our parents insisted we try to emulate. His music was universally "great to listen to" by our parents, and our schools. I remember this so well. I remember these points so much more than anything else I have seen in just the last 15 years. We were freaking out about the Jackson Five in 1969/70 from Mississippi, so I could just imagine how they felt having one of the members of the group in their classroom.

I knew Michael personally for over twelve years. He talked about going back to his old school for this. He was only there for a year. But he was still reminded of how his life was then, more normal than what came later.

I'm her today because it's Michael's birthday and I was one of the ushers at this dedication. My son attended this school and he was so elated that Michael was going to be there. My son was a huge fan of Michael and so was I so I made sure I bought him one of those red jackets (a duplicate of the one Michael wore) they were very popular then. I told my son to take the jacket to the dedication to see if Michael would autograph it. My son 's teacher was controlling the kids so he didn't get a chance to ask him but I got the jacket and stepped away from my post and handed the jacket with a felt pen to Michael and asked if he would autograph it for my son AND HE DID! My son is grown now but I still have that jacket. I don't think the event was highly publicized because for a star like Michael, there were not that many people there. There were a few inside and out but not like the whole city showed up. Happy Birthday Michael! You are legendary and that will remain forever!
