Michael didn’t perform very often in the 2000s, especially not in the US, so that would explain the vibe that you’re getting from the crowd here. Though audiences everywhere else also went absolutely bonkers for him, we just got more chances to see him in person. If you watch the 2006 WMAs in London, he’s on stage for less than 5 mins and is barely audibly singing half a line of a song (he wasn’t meant to sing so that’s not a diss!), and the audience were the most insane I’ve ever seen/been in! What I love about this performance is that you can see the individuals in the audience more than in the stadium shows and it truly shows the breadth of his appeal as there’s all ages, genders, races losing their minds over him🙌🏼

The Bucharest 1992 version on his official KZbin channel gives the clearest idea of how crowds reacted to him. And watch to the very end - most reactors end when he gets the singers/dancers to bow and don’t get to the ad-lib and dancing epicness of the end and his ‘exit’ from the stage after the boxes appear (trying to tell you what to look out for without spoiling it).

@@naiel18 Performance-wise, yes. But the Bucharest one has the crowd reaction which adds even more to it.

I think the thing that younger people don’t now get about Michael is how wide-reaching his fame and popularity was, which is where the comparisons to newer artists come in but don’t really stand up. With Michael, 5 years olds and 85 year olds know/knew his songs, famous moves, costumes, news reports about him & his life, and all before the time of social media! Because EVERYTHING he did was everywhere - if he flew to a country the national news would report it! When it comes to newer acts, they just don’t have that same impact. I’m a music fan and not especially old, and I could name 4 Bruno Mars songs. I know my parents’ generation would know fewer and probably have never even heard of him. I’d even say the same with Beyoncé (I know far more of her songs because we’re a similar age so her career kicked off a time when I was following the charts much more), but again, I doubt there are many older generations than myself who’d know much about her. It’s easy to think that artists today have a huge appeal because they have certain numbers attached to them (followers, views/streams), but that isn’t a realistic measure to compare against.

@@CriticalGaming141 No problem! Glad you’re discovering him👍🏼 For those of us who clearly remember the Michael days - and were fortunate enough to experience him in person ourselves - it’s really our job to ensure the next generations know all about him and what it was like to have him here!
