Every live performance from any tour is lip syncd for the bulk of the song. Even in the Bad tour New York and Kansas City dates where he sung every other song live , he still lip syncd Man in the Mirror (until the live portion begins). So this video is very special.

Random Guy is correct. This is the only reason live version of Man in the Mirror. MJ was so talented but this song is usually reserved to be the final track in his concert when we would usually be understandably fatigued and it's usually lip synced. Too bad we couldn't see this concert

@@kicik5038 not the reason. Dud you hear how hard he had to strain to sing those parts ? They sounded so hard for him to sing. So strained and sharp and tight on his throat and just not right on key. He couldn't do thst every night. He'd fuck it up. The more gravelly part of the end of thdthe song he could sing with Michael more ease.

From what I see he's not holding back even though he says in all of his interviews that he don't give his best in the rehearsals but I'm sure sometimes he do gives his best like this one and the IJCSLY rehearsal of 2009. His voice is pretty rough/not in good condition. He's aging and yes for sure struggling a bit to sing and dance at the same time. You can see that here in the video. His breathing says it all

I know he could always sound like the album version, he just chose not to and used playback instead on some of his songs, to preserve his voice and to avoid further larynx injury (Especially during the 90's). Also, he kinda changed his vocal style during the Bad era, adding more rasp to his higher notes. Listen to the Billie Jean in This Is it, he sounded almost the same to 1983.
