Excellent review as always :) I remember when this came out. He got so much backlash due to the lyrics etc. Musically it was a bit of a departure for MJ but he gained so many new fans from this. The Brazilian people loved having him there and for MJ it was very important to not portray anyone in a bad light. He was respectful to them but wanted to emphasise their plight. Not to mention visiting a lot of their hospitals whilst he was there etc. They loved him then and still do. They adore him. Those drums apparantly were playing from morning to night, over a few days. Such a decent, caring person he was.

Psyche, thank you so much for this reaction! As a Brazilian from Rio, this is just so special. Not only was Michael the first to do something like this, but he did it so respectfully. He showcased Brazilian culture to the world, featuring Olodum (the group with the drums) to the world, wearing their shirt... And in Rio, I remember watching some amateur recordings people did when he was there. He was taking photos with babies, talking to people, and he left his signature on the wall of one of the houses he and his team used as a dressing room - seeing that signature there was the closest I ever got to him. After he passed, the community put a statue of him in that beautiful spot you can see at 3:10. And what still amazes me is how this song resonates so strongly 25 years later, whether it is Brazil or in the US or in so many other places.

I can’t believe we just passed the 12 year mark of his passing. The tears still flow. I can’t help it. It’s a great loss. He was more than just a singer to so many. I just love this song and MJ’s HIStory album. Probably his most mature and personal collection of songs. HIStory is actually my favorite MJ album, containing my favorite MJ song “Stranger In Moscow” (which, as I noted, is how I found your channel 😁). For the likes of Michael Jackson, that was a very stripped-down video of him simply doing what he loved. In the streets with the very people who this song was speaking for. Look around at the state of the world back then to today. We have a long way to go. He caused a stir with the lyrics but ya know, sometimes hearing the truth spoken is hard to swallow. What artist today is anywhere near his caliber and excellence that speaks and performs to the world. There isn't anyone close but my goodness how gifted we were to have him.

His message is so universal and rooted so deeply in truth it will always be pertinent to whatever time or decade you listen to it. I love the energy, excitement, and the people in this film. It captures so much. Some of the richest people I have known have lived in poverty but it seems to bring some people closer to God in some ways. Just finding joy where you can and making love the center of your life as it brings the most meaning to a life. Michael was such a student of human emotions and used his knowledge to reach out and touch people deeply with his artistry. There are so many people all over the world that have been influenced by Brazilian Samba/Bossa Nova. Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire wrote "Brazilian Rhyme". Basia; I believe she lives in England, her music has a very Brazilian sound to it. Have you listened to any of the great artists from Brazil? Sergio Mendes, Tania Maria, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto are some of my favorites.

I absolutely love Michael miss him when he was arrested they put the handcuffs so tight he had huge bruises and they locked him in a bathroom at the jail that had pee and poop all over the walls and floor they left him in there for a long time and kept asking him if it smelled good enough for him and he just said yeah because they kept abusing him its sad what this poor man went through and he was found 100% innocent
