Michael Jai White highlighted the psychological component of Mike Tyson's famous bouts with Evander Holyfield. Past interviewees, including Teddy Atlas, detailed their understanding of how Tyson's knowledge and respect for Holyfield potentially impacted the matches' outcomes. Atlas predicted Tyson's disqualification due to his belief that Tyson knew he could not defeat Holyfield, eventually culminating in the infamous "ear-biting" incident. Holyfield later mentioned that he was never scared of Tyson and viewed Tyson's approach as an opportunity to counterattack. White supported these views by arguing that Tyson might have won had he not known Holyfield personally.

Spot on. I was in high school in 1989 arguing with Tyson fans and told them Holyfield would beat Tyson. Because he wasnt afraid of him. Tyson won most fights at the press conference. Holyfield was an elite boxer and fearless. In the stare downs before both fights he looked right thru Tyson. In the rematch Tyson flinched in the staredown. He knew he couldnt intimidate Holyfield and early on in the second fight he realized he couldnt beat him after being dominated in the first fight. He wanted out of the fight so got himself disqualified just like Teddy said because he knew he couldnt win. Everything I said in 1989 happened.

Nearly 99%of the opponents he faced in the ring were terrified of him, that's basically how he won. But when you pay attention to his matches against fighters who weren't afraid of him, you'll quickly notice that Tyson would do very poorly. This is interesting because, it creates a justified argument about whether or not Tyson is truly as great as he's considered. Let's talk about it 😊🥊.

Tyson would never beat Holyfield. Have no idea what's so hard for people to understand about that. He was not scared in the Olympics, or either of the two times they fought. Holyfield was simply a more skilled boxer. Tyson had only one way to beat you, and if he could not do that early he ran out of gas.

The Buster Douglas fight was a one-off. Buster came in ready, and took it seriously. Mike has said he didn't take Buster seriously. He was with Bobby Brown, in Tokyo, running through a fleet of Japanese women the night before the fight. Didn't even get a good night's sleep. Tyson came in ready to fight Holyfield, and was beaten by a better fighter, with a chin of granite, and no fear in his heart.

Evander signed to fight Tyson twice during that period. Each time Mike derailed the fight. The first time the fight was set for June 18,1990, after Holyfield had already been the number one contender for almost a year. Tyson then lost to a journeyman fighter in Buster Douglas before it could happen. The second time it was set for November 8, 1991. Mike pulled out three weeks before the fight with a supposed rib injury. So, far from not wanting to fight Tyson at his best, Evander was champing at the bit to get Mike in the ring with him, but each time Mike either lost, delayed, or cancelled.

I am legit talking to a friend of mine about this topic when this video dropped. I’ll tell you this, there is not a day in the history of the world where Tyson would beat Holyfield. Holyfield handled Tyson in sparring many times. I know it ain’t the same as a fight, but Evander is superior. If they fought in 90-91, Tyson would have been knocked unconscious.

It's much harder to fight someone that you know may very well know of all your strengths and weaknesses - especially when you know more of their strength than weaknesses. That too much info sort of weakens you a bit. If you were to have a fight against someone - you'd give yourself 10/10 chance of beating them: FAIR. But if somebody show you footage of that person beating up Scott Adkins or Michael J White in a real fight (not movies) - you'd most probably reduce that to a 50/50 probability of win. Too much information is sometimes at your disadvantage.

Bottom line when they fought Holyfield was still a top fighter and Tyson was not. The Mike Tyson who beat Marvis Frazier would have easily beat Holyfield just like the Ali who beat Liston would have destroyed Joe Frazier. Those two examples are why fans want to see fights when both fighters are in their prime which includes Terrence Crawford vs Errol Spence.

All this "Holyfield wasn't scared of Tyson" and "Holyfield was prepared" is bullshit to me. Holyfield was scared of Tyson this is why I feel he kept head butting him in the first and second fights. He used psychological warfare on Mike because he knew it would throw Mike off of his game or aggravate him to the point of disqualification which is exactly what happened in the second fight. Mike seen the same shit happening in the first fight and said "fuck it I'm going to get disqualified but this want to go street then let's go" and took Holyfield ass to Brownsville, Brooklyn! Only thing I fault Mike on is having that weak ass corner who wasn't seasoned in Cus D'Amato style. Had Kevin Rooney been in Mike's corner and he had people around him at Mike's best interest, he would have destroyed Holyfield both fights.

@billdouglas8701
@billdouglas8701 8 ай бұрын
Tyson never came within a mile of “dropping” Evander . He was doing better in the third round than he had been, sure, but there’s no need to exaggerate it. Mike never landed anything as solid and clean in that round as his right to the body-right uppercut to the head in the 5th round of the first fight, and Evander never came close to going down even from that.
@marcuscarr123
@marcuscarr123 8 ай бұрын
@@billdouglas8701 you are full of shit! He was winning round 3 wobbled Holyfield and he almost went down but held on because of his steroid power. Did you see how big Holyfield was. Never been that big before or since. He was training with a known steroid user bodybuilder Lee Haney. That's why he was able to push Holyfield back and out wrestle him even more the second fight. The low blows, headbutting and excessive wrestling alone is terrible. Add steroids to the mix and Mike did not have much of a chance. However a lot of roundheads get tired fast which happened in the 3rd round.
