It's called presentism. I disagree with this line of argument that the student made. But I do applaud him for using a primary source. He should have made the case about how even the Spanish monarchy had to recall Columbus because he was an absolutely idiot as a governor which led to a virtual genocide because of his 'gold quotas'. Look it up. It's pretty awful from standards then and now. That's the line of argument that morons like Knowles can't defend (mostly because the dude is a political instigator and not an actual historian).

@@rso1411 I don't like political commentators. And if the man was good at debate, he would have mentioned the word "presentism" since that was the boy's flaw. Instead, he ran it up to some theme of 'we are where we are because of everything in the past' argument which is weak and lazy. And I used that word because I meant it. Just about everyone I've met that armchairs history is a moron. I actually have an advanced degree for the subject. Just as you don't go to your buddy who reads WebMD for a spinal surgery, I don't go to political commentators for history. I go to historians or the actual source material. The boy who he "destroyed" was at least using source material. I can respect that even though he fell into a presentism argument. Knowles gets paid 10-15k for these arrangement. And people on here hyping him up only puts money in his pockets. I'd rather people go get a real history book.

Sure but Columbus committed mass genocide and cruelty to other human beings (in Cuba and the Caribbean). Someone like George Washington, who also owned slaves, did not lead genocidal campaigns to the scale that Columbus did. He held slaves, but that was normal for people in his caste at the time, so we forgive that to a point when focusing on some of his political ideas. Columbus had few political ideas but for religion and the brutal subjugation of those who he thought god deemed inferior. there's a definite difference.

These weren’t small moral concessions as Knowles put it, these were horrific crimes against humanity type shit. He’s whitewashing the reality or he simply doesn’t know the whole story. D'Genee Knapp wrote, _"IM SHOCKED!!!"_ Not likely. More likely is that you're privileged and apathetic, and you use words without first thinking carefully enough to use words honestly. As long as you benefited from past atrocities, they don't matter to you. But, if someone today commits an atrocity against you, gets away with it, and future generations are going to benefit from that event... well, I bet you've got a lot to say in protest, right? All matters of injustice and oppression must -- MUST -- be viewed from the perspective of the victim. Because power will always rationalize it's abuse, greed, injustice, etc.
@dohvahkene4473
@dohvahkene4473 Жыл бұрын
@@RichardHarlos Where did anyone say they didn't care? People are of their time. While it's true that those in power can often rationalize their actions, viewing all matters of injustice and oppression solely from the perspective of the victim can limit the understanding of complex social issues. The reality is that societal problems are often rooted in systemic and structural issues, rather than the actions of a single group or individual. Thus, a more comprehensive perspective, which takes into account the perspectives of all stakeholders, can lead to a more effective solution. Additionally, empathy and understanding of the perspectives of those in positions of power can help to build bridges and promote meaningful change, whereas a solely victim-centric perspective can lead to a stance of hostility and division. Any argument that is only looked at from the point of view of the victim without willingness to see that of the other is ignorant. For instance, I will use the touchy topic of the American Civil War. The conflict was rooted in deep-seated societal problems, including slavery, states' rights, and economic differences between North and South. While it can be argued that the victims of slavery were at the heart of the conflict, viewing the war solely from their perspective would ignore the complex and interwoven motivations of all involved parties. A more comprehensive understanding of the perspectives of those who fought for the Confederacy, as well as those in positions of power in the North and South, can provide a deeper understanding of the conflict and its causes. Furthermore, empathy and understanding of the perspectives of all parties can lead to a more productive and inclusive approach to discussing and addressing the legacy of slavery in the United States.

(I didn't write that; you did). _"viewing all matters of injustice and oppression solely from the perspective of the victim "_ Where did I say to view matters *_solely_* from the victim's perspective? Spain was taking a reputation beating which isn't bad if you have gold (see countless other atrocities they and other European powers made in the name of God aka gold). Democrats and Republicans flipped values in the 1930s. I can't stand when people start saying Republicans are better because xyz before 1930. Or Democrats are better because xyz after 1930. This is basic history that was taught in elementary school. I get people are conflicted on some historical figures...but the Democrat and Republican thing is elementary.

It's the CHEAPEST way liberals today AVOID responsibility and blame for their party when too much harm committed throughout history aligns with them. Sorry dumbass but that's not how this works. You can't even argue their values changed cus guess who tf is STILL tryna reintroduce segregation by calling them "safe spaces"? who tf STILL tells POCs they're "oppressed" and need saving? Who tf is encouraging violence towards anyone that voices an opinion that doesn't align with theirs (fascist ideolody)? Democraps sure asf haven't changed. The only thing that's changed is how fucking STUPID their cult members *voters are. Btw cult is accurate considering the fact they also founded the KKK

Columbus was Italian who worked for the Spanish king. Columbus didn't discover the USA, he landed in what is now Mexico. It was the Spanish who stormed the lands and named in New Spain in 1521. "White man" as people say, didn't hit Plymouth Rock until 1620. There is so much of our history that people refuse to acknowledge...

Thanks@@Perky_the_Great , i do get that ! I also think that we really should be past this, we aren't tribal territory defenders anymore, we've built a civilisation that spans the globe and have built complex networks for trade and travel; it's whimsy but i dream the world can see itself as one civilisation soon instead of separate independent countries where we clearly rely on one another, or at least countries caring for the fragility of the world and being more thoughtful. conquers ur mom, lmao !

Most people don't comprehend that the end of slavery in the western world coincided with the beginning of the industrial revolution. This was not a coincidence. Machines replaced slaves. For a person to produce their own place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, and have extra to trade for other necessities took massive effort. Just producing enough to survive was unbelievably hard. Slavery increased the efficiency of production, much in the same way machines do today.

@@stevenpadilla4294 I'm not saying it was only him, just that the crown wasn't happy with his actions. He gets the blame for it because he had the responsibility for his crew, and not only allowed their actions but did the same things. And yeah, a 15th century galleon can't really hold much crew compared to todays ships. And yes, 500 years is a long time. Nobody should expect people today to pay for what assholes did so long ago, and I don't think that's what is being asked for. The goal of reframing it as "Indigenous Day" is to stop lionizing Columbus, not to tell white people how terrible they are.
@roboteen
@roboteen Жыл бұрын
@@yraglacus3259 nah, the goal is to tell white people that they're terrible and have to pay reparations. Ask any Democrat politician if they want the whites to pay reparations, literally any of them and they'll tell you that they do. Ask them if they think Africans should pay reparations for the slavery they currently have in Africa, and the slave trade they built kingdoms on in the past (the woman king). Ask them if the Spaniards should pay reparations for being far worse on the slaves they purchased from the Africans. You'll notice that they ONLY want the white people paying. They don't care about the family tree of the black slave owners in America paying, they don't care about the Africans who made the slave trade possible in the first place, they don't care about the Asians that traveled here and are now know as native Americans who also enslaved, raped and pillaged other tribes. They only care that white people pay. They don't even care that the Irish were enslaved. You people only care about Columbus doing a bad deed that literally every group of people in the world did at that time because he was 1: white and 2: he did colonization better than those other groups.
