How is Mike doing these days and what is he up to?

Shaftlet - Agree totally. The guy couldn't adapt. Whatever you think of the motionless start, they were the rules and he acted like an utter blouse when others just got on with it. Still, he won it all as a rider, but still saw fit to act like a five year old on the track. I can only go on a wikipedia report of his misdemeanour, but riding the opposite direction, into oncoming riders sounds like pretty miserable behaviour. What really happened?

Preferred Ippo like this, before they ''modernised'' the place. Imagine Mike the Bike riding in the Polish League today...he would be fantastic and make a fortune!

I think this was a combination of Frank Ebdon trying to make a name for himself and Michael being totally paranoid that refs were out to get him, which they probably were but by this time Michael was fed up with the whole day to day life of being a speedway rider, shame really. By the way Carl Glover who was the manager that day I thought was one of the best and most sensible managers we ever had, I think the riders respected him too, at the 1984 British final when it all kicked off with Carter he was called down from the stands to the changing rooms to sort em all out !

I heard he said he would fight them bare knuckle if they didn't behave..

I saw many home meetings from a referees' box in the 80s, meeting Ebdon & other referees many times. He was the worst by some margin. He could never see anything from a rider's point of view decisions all seemed to be based on finishing the meeting as quickly as possible. If a rider fell after being squeezed out at the first turn, you could guarantee that Ebdon would exclude him instead of putting all 4 back. He was also the only referee I have seen put the 2 minute warning on as the riders crossed the finish line in the previous race. On a very wet & greasy track, I saw him refuse to stop a race after a rider had fallen & couldn't get up, causing the others to ride past as they struggled to maintain control. They assumed the race had stopped until the leader (Mel Taylor) heard an announcement that it was not stopped. The track doctor stormed up to the box in fury then, after Edbon snapped back at him, he withdrew his services for while causing the meeting to be delayed.

If "Tiger" Louis is 43 in this video, that makes it 1984....and I'm probably standing somewhere on the back straight there at Foxhall stadium ....those were the days.

If only John Louis had started his speedway career ten years earlier who know what he might have achieved.

i bet when he looks back now ,, as he has now grown up he must think why did i do that .. but i must say that i do agree with mike a bit cuz back in 84 it was very harsh to be excludsed just for slightly touchuing the tapes . it was a very hard rule in those days when riders were used to rolling n rolling at starts.... just imagine if they allowed rollin again todays riders bought up on standing still would find it unfair if a new rider who had rolled beat them off the start!
