The "Gilded Age" was not a good time for the average American, but I believe the ultra wealthy of that time - who wouldn't even make it into the top 10% today - seemed beholden to the axiom of "Noblesse Oblige." The notion that people of privilege have a responsibility to act with generosity toward the less privileged. That notion died long ago though, and the only obligation the ultra wealthy feel today is to retaining and growing their fortunes at any cost. And I think a lot of that attitude comes from a notion that they made their fortunes all on their own, so why would they help elevate anyone who is less fortunate? There doesn't seem to be a consistent definition of "elites". Sometimes it's business leaders, sometimes it's the super rich, and sometimes it's the intelligent and educated. We need a few more words to keep this organized.
@jeffhaas957716 күн бұрын
There are two competing definitions here - Lewis is talking about the super rich (including business leaders) who are able to do as they want and act on society without consequence. They believe they got there by their own efforts and conveniently ignore all the advantages, or good luck and timing, that they had. The other use describes highly educated people in a derogatory way, which is somewhat justified when they view working class people poorly. So "the coastal elites" is a way of referring to college graduates living in cities. "We're tired of being looked down on by those educated elites."
@jeffrey131215 күн бұрын
@@jeffhaas9577 Then I guess I'm one of the coastal elites, and my opinion of the working class is pretty low right now, but not without cause.

@@jeffrey1312 You know the bar is low when having a uni degree (no big deal where I'm from) and living in a city (85% of the population in my country) makes you "elite". I consider that average.

But why is Michael Lewis compelled to write books about repulsive people? I think he's an entertaining writer, but he really needs to develop some better interests. There's still time, and there are plenty of interesting people out there who aren't repulsive.
@GardenerGeorge2 күн бұрын
Its what he knows . And people have told him they are interested by buying ( a lot of ) his books . I would not want to work in finance OR waste time writing about it . He must feel its his subject at this point .
@jeffpowanda88212 күн бұрын
@@GardenerGeorge Biographers like Lewis, Woodward, and Isaacson tend to find themselves compromised by the subjects they're writing about. They thrive on privileged access, closeness that other writers can't achieve, which promises intimacy and greater insight, but more often results in sycophantism, myopia, and inaccuracy. Best to avoid modern biographies. When Lewis isn't seduced into writing biography, he's a fascinating writer, and much more interesting than Woodward and Isaacson.

@@jeffpowanda8821 Thanks for the response and insightful critique . It triggered two thoughts : 1) The subjects writers choose - I love to write but have never found my subject . One needs ego and motivation that I seem to lack . Its An interesting topic how certain writers choose their topics and why . 2) Modern biography . I absolutely hear what you are saying . I have had similar thoughts about when historians venture into analysis Of “ current “ politics . They are often wrong , because there is information missing from their calculations , and it lowers their integrity and / or authority .

Good politicians should see capitalism as a tool to achieve the common good, a tool that needs control and regulation. When capitalism controls the government, as it does now, the government has lost its purpose.

One lesson I've learnt from billionaires is to always put your money to work, and diversifying your investments. I'm planning to invest about $200k of my savings in stocks this year, and I hope I make profits.

You are right. The best approach I feel is to diversify investments- by spreading investments across different asset classes like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown
