In this informative and thought-provoking chat, James talks to me about the challenges of using our native flora as the basis for naturalistic planting.
In November 2020, the Victorian Government announced their funding for development of The Melbourne Arts Precinct, which (along with much else) will include 1800 sq m of garden, with planting design by Professors James Hitchmough and Nigel Dunnett, from Sheffield University in the UK. This is hugely exciting for Melbourne, and will, I think, take the rigour attending planting design in public spaces to a whole new level - will totally reset the bar.
Both James and Nigel have had ground-breaking books published in the last couple of years - James’ extraordinary ‘Sowing Beauty’ (Timber Press 2017) and Nigel’s incredible ‘Naturalistic Planting Design’ (Filbert Press 2019). They’re both great gift ideas if someone’s hounding you for a last minute suggestion!
