Michael Moore presents a film by Jeff Gibbs, Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will - that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road - selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It's too little, too late.

Removed from the debate is the only thing that MIGHT save us: getting a grip on our out-of-control human presence and consumption. Why is this not THE issue? Because that would be bad for profits, bad for business. Have we environmentalists fallen for illusions, “green” illusions, that are anything but green, because we’re scared that this is the end-and we’ve pinned all our hopes on biomass, wind turbines, and electric cars?
No amount of batteries are going to save us, warns director Jeff Gibbs (lifelong environmentalist and co-producer of “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Bowling for Columbine"). This urgent, must-see movie, a full-frontal assault on our sacred cows, is guaranteed to generate anger, debate, and, hopefully, a willingness to see our survival in a new way-before it’s too late.

EVs are an absolutely indispensable part of preventing catastrophic global ecological collapse. Integrated with renewables they are many times better ecologically than ICVs, & I’m happy to support that with citations. “Are electric cars really green? @@tjevans3025 Not a problem. We have all been duped by the supposedly better for the environment electric vehicle movement. Another area I just found out about, which you don't see being reported, is the number of electric vehicles China is supposedly selling. The information I've read stated China is forcing EV owners to turn their cars in after 2 or 3 years, then they have to get the next model themselves to replace them. There are thousands of nearly new EV's sitting in fields in China, just rotting away. It's all propaganda to make them look like the leader in EV sales. Just like everything else, it's all about the money.
@J4Zonian

@@tjevans3025 Hydrogen is extremely inefficient, expensive, hard to handle & a terrible idea. See Michael Barnard at Cleantechnica & elsewhere. Mining is dirty. The more of it we do the worse off we all are-human & non. Fossil fuels require 500 times more of it than a renewable world, an ever-expanding stain of death on the Earth. Cobalt is being abandoned by the 2 biggest EV makers; not oil refiners, reactor makers, the military... Like your food, clothes, electronics & more, some of it’s produced by slaves because capitalism demands it, the oligarchy demand their lion’s share chunk of every transaction & the most possible profit always. EVs cost more up front, for now, but are getting cheaper fast as batteries get cheaper & more powerful. Fuel & maintenance are so much cheaper (ICVs have 100 times more moving parts than EVs) that total cost of ownership, ie, cost per mile including everything, makes EVs cheaper. That happened for luxury Vs a long time ago & has been trickling down through the models ever since. Want simple? Try iron-air batteries, now in production. Try sodium batteries, ditto. Etc. Solar panels & wind turbines have always been immensely cleaner than fuels. They’re made of steel, glass, aluminum, silicon, copper, a tiny bit of silver & lead, which is all recovered & reused. They use less land than fuels. They pay back the energy, carbon, & other pollution costs of construction in a few months to 2½ years, & produce virtually pollution-free power for decades, until they, like batteries, are essentially 100% recycled, making subsequent generations of renewable generation even more safe, healthy, ecological, cheap. (The lead & other heavy metals, most-deadly PM2.5 particulates, released by burning fossil fuels are scattered everywhere into air, water, soil, bodies, & minds, causing death & destruction wherever they go. Fossil fuels kill 10 million every year, probably sicken 100 million more. They waste precious water, decrease the security of the world, cause wars, autocracy, inequality, oppression.) Please start researching credible sites & listening to experts instead of right wing fossil-fueled psychopathic liars. “A Fossil Fuel Economy Requires 535x More Mining Than a Clean Energy Economy” Michael Thomas, Distilled, March 29, 2023 “New Video: Clean Energy = Less Mining” Climate Crock of the Week, September 15, 2022 “NREL: How Much Land for Renewables?” Climate Crock of the Week, March 1, 2023 “Will We Run Out of Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition?” Climate Crock of the Week, November 17, 2022 “Solar Waste Stream is Tiny, Compared to Current Fossil Fuels" Climate Denial Crock of the Week, October 9, 2023 “Setting the Record Straight About Renewable Energy” May 12, 2020, Susan Tierney & Lori Bird “Planet of the Humans: Let’s Just Have a Think”

@markhemsworth2670
@markhemsworth2670 4 жыл бұрын
@@scsi_joe yes ,it is happening, but the trend is very recent...this documentary really focused on years ago. The example below is India...but Asia represents 2/3rds of power development in the world. Cheaper than coal In 2018, India’s “levelized” cost of solar-power generation-an analysis removing the impact of direct subsidies and figuring in the costs of construction and financing for a new plant-fell to 14% below that of coal, the first time anywhere in the world that generating solar was cheaper than coal on that basis, according to international energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie. India’s national energy plan doesn’t anticipate construction of new coal power plants for at least several years. Even state-controlled Coal India, one of the world’s largest coal-producing companies, in November said it planned a pilot solar project as it navigated a future with less coal. Across Asia, a region expected to account for two-thirds of the world’s new power demand during the next two decades, price declines will make wind and solar combined 17% cheaper than coal by 2030 on a levelized basis, says Wood Mackenzie. In India, solar generation will be almost 50% cheaper, it projects. www.wsj.com/articles/solar-power-is-beginning-to-eclipse-fossil-fuels-11581964338

Mark Hemsworth it isn't about which form of energy is cheaper, the fact is solar is not green due to the sheer amount of mining and coal burning needed to create the infrastructure for it. Your article details a plant that can power the equivalent of a small US town. If we look early in the docu and see the solar array that purportedly could only run about ten US homes, the scale of the one in India would have to be massive. Extrapolate that to running a country or the world? Impossible. Population and energy usage reduction are the most realistic solutions i think.

Here in Germany I uninstalled those apps soon after moving here, because there isn't a single product on shelves in supermarkets here today that doesn't have SOME form of palm oil in it. I cut back on showering and shampooing (1-2x week!) and save water/energy, too. I had a very vivid dream, by vivid I remembered colors, details, and I wasn’t rushed, I contemplated the scene and even thought I’m dreaming but kept observing. What I was observing was a new species of human, the environment that they lived the structures they lived in and their anatomy. The environment was a sandy estuary type creek running though a settlement of small huts. Plant life was very basic, around the creek edges grew a bit of a grassy verge a few gnarly trees spread far and wide and no other plant life. People were collecting water from the creek. The beings were small slim and looked quite tired and under nourished. They were all wearing very drab tunics and then as I looked closely at a male who walked past me I noticed that he had grass like hair and his body hair was like mycelium. It was very hot, the environment looked like it was basically scorched. These people were not eating, they had nothing to eat. They were photosynthesising. Somehow this tribe had been genetically modified to photosynthesise. They were slightly plant like. The thing I remember was how basic, their lives were, how weak they were and how poor the environment was. It was like everything else had died of heat except these beings who could water themselves and gained all their nutrition from the burning sun.

Same with Blood & Gore, Grantham etc who are more obviously in it for the money. And oddly, this kind of scummy business is precisely why some greens become sceptics as they're no longer in 'denial'. But sustainability is a tough sell because you're asking people to consume less. Much easier to use regulatory capture to funnel $$ in your direction & tell people they're saving the planet by burning it. But as this video shows, it's practically and economically a massive scam creating environmental destruction and energy poverty.

I've been saying for years we need to invest in energy storage R&D. There are methods available, but it needs out-of-the-box thinking. For example, at a household level, in Africa they use a simple gravity storage system for lights (similar to winding up an old-fashioned grandfather clock). At a neighbourhood level, there's gravity storage (see Wikipedia for detail). At a country-wide level there's building hydro-power two-level dams, that pump the water up when the sun is shining/wind is blowing and use it to run hydro-electric when it's not. A Canadian firm is using renewables & electrolysis to convert CO2 into airplane fuel. HOWEVER, there is an up-front energy cost to build these, for a net lowering of energy in the long term. Also, as the film points out, these processes need to be cleaner too. Make the steel and cement as intermittent processes (which requires a new design, or local energy storage). Ideally we would reduce our energy consumption first - insulate our homes, build cities where work, leisure and home are within walking distance (with pavements - something I noticed was sorely missing in the US when, as a non-car driver I tried to walk to the local store from my mother-in-law's house!). This needs to start with those who have the top 10% of wealth - they currently consume over 50% of the world's energy, more than the whole of the under-developed world.

I also choose, back in the 1990s, to limit my childbearing to two. This is happening too in the West, however the capitalist system requires "new blood" to fuel the illusion that growth is necessary - usually by immigration from poorer (less energy intensive) countries. It is this underlying political change that needs to happen. Moving away from growth, to sustainability, and beyond to renewing the land, rivers and seas that have been polluted by past capital growth.

Watching those 500 year old Joshua trees get pulverized in the name of "green energy" was more than angering, it was painful, heartbreaking. (While watching this movie I was reminded of the somewhat recent moves by the Sierra Club to label John Muir - who did so much to save the redwood forests - a white supremacist. This together with its support of burning "wood chips" (forests) in the name of saving the environment shows the true colors of the Sierra Club.). My eyes were opened to a lot of things I didn't know as well, although none of it was surprising.

@@betsyj59 I hundred percent agree with your feelings on the killing of the ancient Joshua trees! That was just gruesome and enraging. The capitalistic mind loves to classify deserts (and swamps) as "wastelands" so they can exploited and abused in a whole variety of ways (nuke tests, military exercises, uranium mines, off-road vehicles, garbage dumps, toxic waste and radioactive waste dumps and so on...). Even the ancient forests that I, and Muir, love(d) so much were up until very recently (and some still see them this way amazingly) were considered by many to be biological deserts (see a slam on both the forests and the deserts) and cellulose cemeteries and were considered wasteful. It was considered morally right and even morally imperative to cut these forests down and replace them with spindly overstocked monoculture tree farms/plantations where the trees would never be allowed to reach anywhere near their maximum ages and therefore would never be able to provide the ecologically stability and resilience that ancients forests do. Their impacts on carbon cycling and water cycling and quality and biodiversity, much more manageable forest fires and so on... are incredibly beneficial to life as we know it.

This is such a biased outlook on the big picture. We are all part of the problem! Blaming a set of individuals who have lived a less amount of time on the earth than previous generations is borderline ignorant. Regardless of the amount of consumption at the present moment, previous generations will always have consumed more of the earths resources, new generations just add to the problem. Yes it’s a battle for renewable resources and cutting down on our global footprint, but the main issue is our growth as a global population and not having enough resources to fill that need. If you think people born after 1996 who are just now 25 and settling into adulthood are the main contributors to our global crisis, and not the countless generations beforehand, then i don’t know what to tell you man, it’s just shifting the blame on the new guy. That’s the type of attitude that stagnates our progress to solving this. It’s their future too man, they inherit this.

The number one thing that any one person can do to address the worldwide poly crisis is to support a voluntary reduction of the human population. We need a 25% ecological footprint tax for the richest 1% of the world to hire the appropriate medical staff, and set up mobile units that could go to communities around the world, paying people to get sterilized. Organizations, such as the nonprofit #WorldVasectomyDayWouldBeIdeal. When considering, renewable energy options to mitigate the suffering caused by our predicament… Don’t believe the bright green lies! There is nothing renewable about so-called “renewable energy“. Energy powers ecological devastation independent of its source. If human beings actually had an endless source of free clean green energy… Which does not exist it would only fuel the acceleration of the destruction of the biosphere. Deforestation, ocean depletion, habitat loss, desertification, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, groundwater depletion, global warming, overpopulation, rampant pollution, and the six mass extinction would all continue to accelerate. This is not a supply problem… It’s a demand problem! Fewer humans equals less suffering for all life on earth! We really need to promote government and nonprofit funded vasectomies and tubal ligations. I realize that it is unlikely that governments will pass a tax on the rich to pay for voluntary sterilization, and you may not be able to contribute, or participate in a nonprofit that funds voluntary sterilization. However, you can discuss with others whether it is ethical to bring a child onto a planet, in the midst of. Global industrial, and ecological collapse. We can talk about the ways that we can mitigate suffering, or people can stay silent, remain ignorant, live in denial, continue to celebrate procreation, and contribute to the suffering. We can either reduce our population by choice… Or we can let nature do it in her unmerciful way… it’s biology 101… A life that is never brought into existence, is a life that will not have to suffer the unequivocal impending collapse.

@kev The political situation caused by the unhinged lunatics on the far right certainly is heartbreaking. But no, we’re not doomed yet. Among the crucial solutions are the things Gibbs hated on in this seemingly endless collection of lies. This kind of relentless attack has allowed the insane right wing to delay implementing those & other solutions for decades. We can still save ourselves, & them, by removing them from power by whatever peaceful means are necessary, & making sure progressives are in charge. “Setting the Record Straight About Renewable Energy” May 12, 2020, Susan Tierney & Lori Bird Why “Planet of the Humans” is crap Tom Athanasiou, April 23, 2020

I wouldn't catastrophize it so much. I think we need to get back to basics. Greed is evil. We don't NEED to live like this, especially if it involves sacrificing the planet! We are so spoiled that you never hear any of these people say we should simply live on less. Put down our TV's and cars and phones and planes and modern medicine live as the earth will allow. All roads point to this is not the way humans can live forever. But until we get our greed in check and stop spoiling ourselves and the planet with technology in pursuit of comfort and excess, this will be a self fulfilling prophecy. Again the obvious solution is we simply go without a lot of the modern comforts in favor of our planet and hence our species long term survival.

If we talk about politics, society, religion, organized crime-corruption (Biden's Delaware and trumps''s mafia) - MUCH MUCH MORE! just imagine turning entire countries to evil by removing few people - it happened in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, South Korea. China, Pakistan, Ecuador, central Europe and they keep going - the last example being North Korea, but others will follow. They have the (flat/empty) money, they have the technology, they just need armies of liers and killers and they recruit them at fast pace, through bribing, fake promises and satanist indoctrination (see the charismatics replacing the older Christian chuirches, the campaigns against islam (where they support a sect called assasins), buddism. confucianism to name but a few.

@@louisdrouard9211 Sure, subsidies for Teslas and solarpanels you can call a result of some taxmoney from oil. You have some misconceptions about Norway. We have pisspoor public transport, train really is no option, and in the north there is no railway. This is one of the big issues for the left who wants to kill oil. They propose to spend 200 billions, an entire years budget on high speed trains. Double that if the north should be included. And the tram if it is the subway, is only built in Oslo. Few buslines, not an option as a commute for people who do not work in the cities. And it costs a fortune for a buspass ar a trainticket. once I bought a ticket for a flight to spain, thast cost the same as a busride to Oslo, a 3,5 hour busride. And included in the spainflight was a domestic flight to oslo. Bit ridiculous that people discuss if they are going to take a weekendtrip to a domestic city or a trip to london, and ends up on London because it is cheaper. And sweden is better and cheaper on public transport, has lower CO2 emissions pr capita than we do. And Finland has been doing good financially the last 50 years, they have had the ability to go green. And the land of the thousand lakes have vast potential for hydropower, which is liquid gold. But they choose to conserve their nature. Also, norway and sweden are on the same power market, we import export to eachother. We produce 105% of the energy we consume in green energy. So a portion of the energy sweden consume comes from us, which helps their CO2 footprint.
@fatlittlekid1982
@fatlittlekid1982 4 жыл бұрын
@@louisdrouard9211 Reputation might be good, but according to tables we have about twice the per capita CO2 emissions of sweden. I assume that is because of the oilindustry. Should not focus to much on that, when it is so scarcely populated, and the nature is so nice, with clean air and clean water. Just like Canada, almost the same level as the US, but the footprint is not the same with so vast landarea and small population. And Canada also have a good reputation on this. Sure, oil was a blessing in the past, because we were one of the poorest countries in Europe. kind of a curse too. When mismanaged policies, the living expences skyrocket. So with a housingmarket that doubles in price each decade, because of lack of building, peoples expences grow more than the wages when you get 4% yearly increase. Public employees usually get that. People are drowning in debt then, and we are just about highest in the west in personal debt. Also, with such wages in the public sector and it employs 1/3, we are really just burning the money. Roads are terrible, and have not found funds to do infrastructure because of this. When a strip of road costs 10 times what it cost to do it ten years prior, you can never catch up. And healthcare and other public buildings are crumbling. Hospitals has to choose between maintenence of buildiings, new machinery, and care. So not as rosey as it seems. When the government take it for granted and not a buffer, you get hit hard when oilprices halves and you steer to break even with peak oil and highest oilprices ever. Like we had in 2006. Then we got the crack, oilproduction was lowered, and prices went down the drain. We got hit hard. And that is a thing to think about, each time we have a financial crises in the world, we seem to be hit the hardest because of oil. Financially instable to have a volitale sector be so dominant. And it is partly due to the oil, that our labourparty has chased most industry out of our country, so bit of a curse. High taxes has made it cheaper to move to sweden and produce, then export back to us. Or to denmark, it is crazy to buy traditional norwegian food, and it says made in sweden or denmark. Like norwegian fish, they ship it to denmark, then process it and sgips it back. How is that good for the emissions? That has to be done because our silly labourgovernment signed a tradedeal with EU, where we can only export raw fish to them without high tariffs. Cannot put it in tomatosauce in a can or smoke it here and export. So the processingplants moved to denmark.

Yes, GM killed the electric auto though those who were leasing them wanted to buy them, but GM falsely said no one was interested. Though GM started to get back in the game, they're quitting again because of weak sales. The real issue is that technology is rapidly advancing, such that the newer electric cars have greater distance capability. Sweden is building an electric highway system so electrics can charge while driving, thus needing less batteries, decreasing the car's overall weight. New electrics with older tech, don't sell! A report this month shows Germany's emissions hit a 70 year low as it reduces reliance on coal in 2023. Some countries, the US included, are dragging their feet. Things are possible, where there's a will, there's a way!

It is certainly sad about those orangutans and what is also sad is the paradox here. I think the documentary accurately identified the issue at the heart of it all, humans fear and inability to face the reality of mortality. So how do the authors finish the film? They conclude it by tapping into that same fear and thus enable the disgust of death to continue. Perhaps that paradox is necessary. After watching this documentary by Moore, who I don't really like because he is also quite hypocritical at times (though thanks for making it freely available) is that the solution is fairly straight forward but capitalism in particular will not like it. What is that solution? Reduce consumption, stop wasting energy, plant forrests and reduce the human population through a one child policy. At least we can experience parenthood this way which might be better than a debatable alternative. I wonder for example if that alternative will be the corona virus vaccine. Is it's goal not vaccinate against a manufactured epidemic, but really to be the method of sterilizing the human population.
