He’s easily the second best QB based on performance and talent combined. Throwing only he’s the best. The issue is obviously health.
@johnfranklin8047
@johnfranklin8047 2 ай бұрын
The issues go beyond health. He’s a talented thrower who doesn’t pass over the middle of the field (essential in the NFL), and who had a complete meltdown in the National Championship game against Michigan when faced with the nearest to an NFL D he’d seen to that point. If he’s pushed off his spot, and his rhythm is thrown off, he struggles - and he doesn’t create (another essential in the NFL). These are not my words, but those of respected analysts Dane Brugler and Nate Tice of the Athletic. Both have a late Round 2 Grade on Penix.
@romain8390
@romain8390 2 ай бұрын
@@johnfranklin8047 there is a video about an hour and a half long of every single Michael Penix Junior throw from 2023.. Passing over the middle is such an overrated knocking of his game… That simply wasn’t what his offense asked him to do… if the majority of the route concepts are focused to open space in the intermediate sideline and deep portion of the field, that doesn’t mean Michael Penix, Junior, can’t make those drawers… But if you want to see them, watch the Texas game, he had at least four completions over the middle that were 10 yards one more… Including a touchdown to McMillan, so it’s not like it’s something he cannot do…
@johnfranklin8047
@johnfranklin8047 2 ай бұрын
Of course, Penix ‘can’ throw the ball over the middle (the coaches draw the plays with routes in the middle), but he chooses not to throw the ball there. As I said, he has excellent arm talent. But he can’t work in a muddy pocket, as the Michigan game demonstrated, and if he’s knocked off his spot he is unable to create. Despite posting a good 40 time, he doesn’t create with his legs. This combination, plus his injury history, will make it difficult for teams to select him before Day 2. This is the point I’m making.
@werb24
@werb24 2 ай бұрын
@@johnfranklin8047seriously? We are using one game against the best team in the nation as the measuring stick? I guess you would have passed on Manning and Andrew Luck too? They struggled on the games against the top competition. What about the ND game for Williams? Or the 4 game stretch where he under performed? You gonna come up with 20 excuses for it like every TV analyst? Love Williams talent, so not saying he’s not the top guy, but just that these broad takes from small sample sizes is nonsense. And btw if you are quoting Dane or some other TV analyst you’re lost already. Watch the guy on your own. His lower body mechanics are the key issue w him. Feet aren’t always pointed where they should be. That’s really correctable and is largely responsible for his issues w shorter throws/muddy pockets.
@johnfranklin8047
@johnfranklin8047 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply. I’ve watched and played a lot of football at the QB position, and I don’t believe that you can only evaluate without taking on-board other opinions (both good and bad). As stated, Penix is a talented thrower at the college level and has delivered in the PAC. I do not base my opinion on one game. I’m merely highlighting my concerns based upon his short circuiting, trying to go ‘coast-to-coast’ (that’s sideline to sideline) on plays rather than throw the ball into tight windows over the middle. His ability to deal with muddy pockets is poor because he has a wide base, and unless this changes - at almost 24 years old that’s unlikely - he’ll struggle to transition to the NFL.

@@xavierlemon7035 Good question... I actually got excited, but it reminded me of when the Vikings reached for Christian Ponder. Strategically, I was elated as a Bears fan cuz the best player on the board was Odunze and they left him for us... Penix is healing strongly from the consecutive ACLs and will be a potential powerhouse if he can sit and heal... His leadership and intangibles are top notch. Quarterbacks and Kickers are the only ones who don't compete for their job. Cousins got two years guaranteed at the top of the market... I actually like the aggressiveness, but hate that everyone might not have been on board with it cuz Penix is a great pick with outstanding football character. They paid Cousins a US Mint, but didn't get him an extra weapon... However, Penix could be in a great position with the aging QB... Great Drama!...

Honestly don’t care what Dane had to say about it. I can make the same argument about Williams, who fell apart against the only NFL caliber D he faced. The offense was geared to throw the ball deep outside. But for sure he has areas to work with (foot work and base on intermediate throws etc) but his talent throwing the ball is only Matched by Williams. Daniels is a guy w a good not great arm who didn’t show a ton of arm strength during the year or at his pro day. To me penix and Williams are in their own class. JJ is a JAG and so is Nix.

You know, on deep throws the ball can curve a bit dependent upon spin. I think there’s a Physics term for it. But I wonder how much receivers have to adjust to play with a lefty? Simms is a lefty I think and just the opposite rotation might be weird for most receivers. (Tom Brady I think had a higher completion percentage throwing to his left. I vaguely remember seeing a stat on it a few years ago. But I think most QBs like throwing the opposite way. If true it seems a lefty might be better to his right.)

Yes, Penix is a talented thrower, and you can get away with that (alone) in college. But playing QB in the NFL requires a whole lot more. Once in a blue moon someone will mention it, like here, but I think it's by design to mute any talk about it to prevent people from any exodus from the NFL as they get more Vegas bound with deceptive officiating. It's blatant. If you don't believe the NFL tilts games through referee earpieces, you're not paying attention. Look at the 2009 NFC Championship. Secondly, Dane had mock drafts which are based on what he believes teams will do, from talking to his contacts. This is quite different. The NFL just gotta push them boys in a position they absolutely suck at because it takes a brain to properly play that position. Ask Sean Payton how his experience with his ridiculously overpaid quarterback in Denver was.

What a shocker Florio has nothing to offer regarding player evaluations or X’s and O’s. Hmmm wonder why this is always the case? Uhh cuz Florio doesn’t know football!! He refuses to actually do his job and analyze football. He can’t hold a candle to Simms. They’re not even in the same galaxy. And Florio knows that but he’ll never admit that, or actually put the work in cuz it’s too easy for him to just steal Simms takes and knowledge and never give him credit for it. He’s a selfish, egotistical fraud

Terrific comment. It's really embarrassing when Florio does offer his football insight. He gets braver when he's on with Miles and the ignorance flows a little more frequently.

You watch film. You then make you evaluation. That doesn't mean you'll be good in the NFL. Wilson has arm talent. Wilson has tools. Wilson isn't a smart QB.

😂 Chris Simms must be pulling some major smoke to help NYG. Please, somebody in the top 5 take Penix and push one of those other QBs to the Giants. Penix will bust in the NFL. Sorry.

Not worth the 13th pick in the first round Mabey in 2nd or 3rd raiders have all 3 NFL QBs better draft defense.

Most draftniks are and have been 100% wrong (especially on Penix) with their copy & paste lame takes, and are WAY TOO LATE when it comes to QB prospects and the NFL Draft... As a big time UW Husky and Raiders fan, I have seen EVERY GAME of Penix as a Husky, I said BACK IN DECEMBER when Penix' Huskies beat that LOSER BO NIX for a 3rd straight game, and the final Pac 12 Title Game win IN RAIDERS ALLEGIANT STADIUM HELLOOOO!!! It was meant to be :) At #13 overall (or maybe small trade up) Penix is more than worthy of the pick because QB HELLOOOO! No stupid cornerbacks or maybe the 4th best Tackle Florio & Simms! When you have MEH traited QB's like O'Connell & Minshew (both are BACKUP QBs PERIOD) you take the winner, Uber traited QB talent with elite arm velocity/accuracy, great presnap reads ability, tons of experience, made amazing clutch throws and 2nd chance mobile plays all 2023 season: vs. Oregon 2 times, @USC beating Caleb, in the playoffs vs Ewers' Longhorns, and Penix was a WARRIOR vs. #1 Michigan D that was overpowering every Husky olineman not named Troy Fautanu, and were literally mugging every Husky WR since the National Title refs let Michigan CBs mug and DPI all game for no flags, just rewatch Penix lazer TD throw to McMillan before haltime where Penix called out the DPI on Rome Odunze mid play!(plus Huskies had no run game and were down 14-0 fast thanks to that meh Husky run D). Plus the whole stupid Penix injury narrative and age (ahem Penix is younger than Bo Nix by 7 months) Micheal hasn't had a major injury in 3 years by the time the 2024 season starts. Big Penix Energy to the Raiders, make it so Tom Telesco and Coach AP, Micheal will be the most CJ Stroud like QB from this draft. Ready to roll with the talented Raiders skill players on offense. No to Loser Bo and WAYYYY Overrated JJ McCarthy (ahem Zach Wilson 2.0 just watch) Micheal Penix Jr to Raiders all the way!
