The Messi example suggests there may be something wrong with the distribution of wealth, but that does not necessarily mean something's wrong with meritocracy.
@svenhurlimann10996 ай бұрын
I think the example with messi was not directed at meritocracy, but more towards showing that free markets do not bring about meritocracy, or for that matter, do not bring about a meritocratic distribution of wealth.

@svenhurlimann1099 he says high-school teacher should get paid comparable to Messi. I agree. Question is how can we modify the rules such that this happens.
@svenhurlimann10996 ай бұрын
@@CyberneticOrganism01 Agreed, I think we are on the same page here. Teachers should be paid higer wages and that top football athlestes do not need the extreme amounts of money they earn. Regarding the question of how we achive a more fair distribution of wealth, mr. Sandel suggests that meritocracy, as we as a society understand it, may not be the best way and that rather than focusing on individual achivments and skills, we should focus on what is beneficial for the common good, therefore not rewarding people for theyr Talents but for the contribution to society they make. Thats how I understand this talk and I agree with that, at least in large parts.

What about the tyranny of virtue, the tyranny of conscience, the tyranny of honesty, etc? Placing the word tyranny before a complex system does not make it tyrannical. Following the great Thomas Sowell, one can always ask, "What is the alternative." Admittedly, meritocracy is not a perfect system. But it seems that all other alternatives are worse.

Its interesting to think of all things as biases.. talent, merit, effort, genetics.. ignoring all other things.. instead of adapting consideration.. Here's the thing though you can not rely on the individual alone to have consideration. A Republic will not work.. But Socialism brings tyranny of the masses, biases, ignorance's of the individual. A cap perhaps on capitalism, that feeds back into the lowest incomes..

They are a total failure. There are several cities and states talking about imposing rent caps now - and they are all by democrat governments. Imagine if there were caps on incomes? I think an argument about luck of Messi being born in the age of soccer is false. Millions of others are born to the same age and have ssme opportunity to excel in this sport. I agree that there are disadvantaged kids who get less opportunities just because they were born in poor or less educated family. The function of the state is to create just education system that is free for all and gives equal opportunities to all students. Having graduated the high school new adults should join the race to the top with the most innovative and talented rewarded accordingly for their work.

Improving the common good should be the ultimate goal of all people. That is the message of Jesus and Ben Franklin. Orientals surely have examples of their own. When speaking of Messi the professor stopped short. He acknowledged that the footballer was at the very top of his game and that some teachers were also the very best, but then he stopped. The next step should have included that not only was Messi the superstar but that the market judged he was and pays far more to watch him than it will to have superstar teachers. (No contracts for live broadcasts of 11th-grade geometry class are made in the US let alone Brazil or England.) The second shortcoming of Prof. Sandel's analysis concerns the level of starting advantages. For opportunities to be completely equal, we have to go past all 3-year-old's nutrition and medical care to family values and even to DNA. Ultimately, the professor talks himself away from striving for equal opportunity to equal outcomes (though he carefully rephrases). Additionally, he should have noted there are many ways to share in the bounties of life - from missionaries to mentors.
