Dr. Sandel's way of engaging with the questioners was so refreshing and endearing. I also like how he insists on clarifying what exactly the questioner means and subtely forcing them to have courage in voicing out and spell out their thoughts. We need more gentle and kinder discussions like this and eventually and debate between the various view points holders which doesnt devolve into disrespect, name calling and dismissing the others' idea.

Brilliant lecture by Prof. Sandel. A very strong argument for deliberative democracy- and the idea for deliberation with a sense of openness. Democracy as deliberation requires listening for the principles underlying a position that we do not agree with. We've really lost our ability to have these conversations - so much of this is because of our social media driven attention spans that prioritize labelling and ad hominem arguments over doing the hard work of fully understanding the full moral and philosophical import of an argument.

Brilliance of Michal in making the moderator spell out what it means to be illeberal. Its important to reign in the maximalistic idea of the 'tolerant liberalism' which is often extremely quick to paint any opposing viewpoint, no matter how debate-worthy, as illiberal

The talk duly emphasizes the current problems of severe and rising economic and social inequalities, high and rising levels of polarization in the society, and resultant unacceptable levels of intolerance towards the `other’ in the society, which will be detrimental to democracy. It cannot be denied that these problems need a lasting solution on an urgent basis. What is doubtful for me is whether such an important and a worthy aim can be attained through a rational appeal to develop morality required for cohesive society. The doubt arises out of several reasons. First, several factors affected development of democracy. The Renaissance (for example, Encyclopedia of Diderot) had initiated replacement of science in place of religion as dependable guide to understand the life and the world around us. Many of the ruling powers (feudal and of monarchs) had severely diluted because the incessant wars had bled them to near bankruptcy. There no longer were more uncharted areas where the colonies could expand, bringing in the riches through exploitation, and restore power. Technological developments had empowered the common man to find alternative means for livelihood. It was confluence of these and similar factors that established a global movement of equality, to be attained through democracy or socialism or communism. During that era, most of the people were poor and communities were rural. Poverty does instill a virtue of cooperation because cooperation is the only means of survival during adversities that regularly befall one or the other across populations. As against that, today much of the people are richer and more educated. I wonder if they can be made to heed to some appeal for development of moral virtue, no matter how appropriate, even inescapable such an appeal maybe. David Graeber had highlighted several issues where equality is not pursued. He had said that we are yet to create a simple robot that would take one’s laundry to washing machine and bring it back. Such rudimentary automation would ease the life of common man, but that has not happened. Similarly, we have found drugs like Prozac and Ritalin but have not found cure for several of the diseases that affect masses, or drugs that can cure cancer. Since 1960s, there have been no projects with global vision. Under the dictates of neo-liberal economic theory, one of the basic premises of which was balancing the budgets over at least an electoral cycle, such projects have evaporated. Last such project was declared by Russia to launch hundreds of satellites that could reflect light (energy) back onto the earth, thereby solving the energy problem. Nothing more came out of it. To the extent that these claims are right, and they are, it seems that world is not busy solving problems of the common man, but is busy protecting the hegemony of the ruling class or the rich people. Let us take the issue of data ownership on social platforms, which drives the prosperity of tech giants. The data ownership depends on a single court judgement in late 1970s and can be easily corrected. The tech giants are not only significantly contributing to the social polarization but also drives unbridled consumerism, causing the climate change to the extent that it has brought the planet on the brink of extinction. I am sure that things are much more complex than I have summarized above, but even this rudimentary analysis, all which I am capable of, has led me to wonder whether mere appeal to `better angels of our nature’ will produce necessary results. We know that time and again Capitalism has failed, and failed seriously, eroding democracy to the extent possible. Essential question is: Could we think of a system where democracy and capitalism are sufficiently decoupled to ensure better life for common man?

Dr. Sandel is a particularly gifted at addressing the nuances of any issue brought before him, talking with rather than at the interviewers. However, I’m disappointed with the level of discourse offered by the two clearly well-educated interviewers. The questions were trite and unhelpful to the listener (seemed more like audience questions for a guru). Missed opportunity.

If anyones taking questions, I have one, if the purpose of the presence of a moral or spiritual idea in public square is just to fill the void that might be otherwise invaded by vices like intolerance, or is there also any inherent purpose to it? Second, Is national pride a moral virtue or something that is filling the gap?
@rishavsingh1188
@rishavsingh1188 2 ай бұрын
I can try... The purpose of Moral is not just to avoid other vices but to inherit growth..for example having aim is complete in itself not because not having an aim distracts people in life... 2.National pride can never be filling a Gap it should come naturally as a person is naturally proud of his home his family his school his district etc.

@@rishavsingh1188 Hi! Thankyou for replying! My purpose here is to ask that if morality is an end in itself(as you suggested) then why is it necessary, in public sphere, to employ morality as a mean to an end vis-a-vis “filling a void that might be evaded by vices”! ( about which I think positive secularism is a visionary step taken by constitution makers) But we have seen “religion” and “National Pride” being often misused as a political tool to fill that void. In that case does it not become vice? I mean what is pride, but the mother of arrogance! So in my opinion, these are very subjective terms. We should draw inspiration from them and incorporate them in our daily life but at a personal level.
@rishavsingh1188

@@simranjuttla8693 everything is subjective at a certain point but Moral is something that is complete in itself if anyone is using national pride or religion for personal agenda that is personal but my belief is that if anything feels forced to you that simply means you never had that inherited in you for eg-standing at the time of national anthem is not necessary to prove patriotism but if you are thinking about it or convincing yourself that means you have other factors affecting your Moral judgement otherwise it is obvious and should come naturally...

What a fantastic discussion ! Dr. sandel is great.. old fan here of course ! He’s done more to teach me philosophy of law than my legal degree did ! But - the anchors can do a lot to actually reflect on their view of India. They are the definition of disconnected liberals who have no idea what’s happening in their country and so they end up jumping to lazy and easy conclusions. It would have been so much better had the anchors asked a lot more informed questions than the ones they did. I truly admire Dr sandal who may not know as much about India, but instinctively is spot on, than these guys !

A laudable sentiment but it’s important to look deeper to the reality and history. Why has it come to be? Sure a country should care for all citizens including the minorities. However does that mean that PM (UPI) can state and act that a particular minority has first claim on the county’s resources? When the biggest terrorist attack in Mumbai happened, is it reasonable to lie and claim that Tamils were responsible and not hold the people responsible to account. Unfortunately Congress party ruled by dividing the majority and support a minority. It is unfortunate that India was ruled, not governed, by a (Nehru/Gandhi) family as a monarchy. It continues to perpetuate divisions (North/South; minorities/majority) to maintain relevance. I hope people of India treat all citizens equally well but also expect equal responsibility.

The entire point for the same can be reversed onto the BJP, who have utilized faultlines, to serve their political agenda, of disregarding and furthermore, openly demonizing minority voices, are extrinsically in opposition to the state, without caring to engage with the ideas. That is why the Pm of the country comes down to appeal to the base desires of people, asking people to be idenitified by their clothes, and not by what they say. In the same vein, the party utilizes technology to peddle falsities, to poison the well of good and noble discourse.

Minority appeasement is a hindutva propaganda only. Statistical data shows minorities especially muslims are way backward in all socio-economic indicators countrywide, most instances even behind salita. This was already visible across India but again proven by the Justice Sachar commission and Rangan ath Mudra commission reports. Not a single HDI indicator muslims are in a better position than forget about upper caste hindus even other OBC communities. This minority appeasement is a widely used tool to polarise votes on communal lines and spew hate and enmity against muslims by hindutva supremacists actually.

Morality does not change with social contexts. Killing a person, in any societal structure is wrong. Intellectuals are the menace to the ilk of your liking, because they run away from any form of discourse, like plague, because they are afraid of discussing their own ideas, lest it be called out openly in the marketplace of ideas. Why? because they are simply bad. Am I generalizing it? probably yes. But that is also because how hesitant the BJp is to openly discuss ideology, and instead hiding behind terminology like Hindu unity, which when analysed by any sensible hindu, would deem it easily fallible. BJp and RSS, would not be happy to have them, because they would run away from them. That is the truth. Which is why I respect people like Sanyal, and gadkari, who are still willing to engage and put in a point, instead of obviously running away from the matter, like the likes of Modi.
