One of the most insightful explanations of what painting is that I've heard. To hear my personal belief of what painting is, voiced by someone as insightful as Mr. Simpson reaffirmed my way of thinking.

Wow. I really see vermeer in his art. Abstract yet realistic yet dreamy. It doesn't look like a painting anymore, but it very much is.

Nice interview, 'chairs have that sense of human presence...' and the bench, as a metaphor of time passing. Intrigued by the ladders, as I have something with ladders in my paintings too. Wish I could see the show in Bornemouth opening today...

I can never answer the question 'what are you feeling'. I am so glad he hesitated over the question. Feeling seems limited, inexpressible being maybe? Like listening to him... Thanks. - usa

This a very interesting interview. I only don't understand why he would say that Vermeer has a beautiful FLEMISCH feel in his paintings. Their is quite a difference between the Dutch masters and the Belgian primitives.

Flemish Baroque painting refers to the art produced in the Southern Netherlands during Spanish control in the 16th and 17th centuries. See:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flemish_Baroque_painting and www.transfigurephotography.co.uk/vermeer-de-delft/

I don't understand: first see the painting itself and then the image later... must ask my teacher.

@@AnIrishRover Didn’t know Delft was seen as a part of the Southern Netherlands. As far as I know it is ( and was ) part of Holland (The Northern part of the Low Countries).

Everyone of these painter guys announce to the world that they are atheists in these videos. Does someone expect them to say that. Is there a powerful someone in the art world who wants to hear that? If they were to say I'm a Jesus freak, would they lose all of their business and collectors?

By the time this video was made it would not matter any more, success has already arrived. Trust me, no one is ever going to ask you to make a video about your life's work.

At 14:00 is someone going to tell him that when God came to earth as man He cleansed the lepers? Mad at the church, not the Creator.

It's also true that most truly authentic painters are treated as lepers and kept outside the art world. The treatment they receive is not dissimilar.
