This electrifying recording of Mozart's Mitridate, which he wrote at just 14 years old, stars baritenor Michael Spyres in the title role with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre. Discover here: w.lnk.to/mitLY
When Michael Spyres sang this role in Paris in 2016, Opera magazine wrote: "With their vertiginous leaps and wide range, Mozart’s arias present formidable technical challenges, not least for the tenor in the title role, who is pushed to extremes. Michael Spyres, a singer of exceptional agility and control, took these in his stride." A year later, he took the role at London’s Royal Opera House, and this time Opera magazine praised his performance as "never less than thrilling", noting that his recitatives were "outstanding for their beauty and unforced eloquence."
The cast of the album also features vocal stars Julie Fuchs as Aspasia, Sabine Devieilhe as Ismene, Elsa Dreisig as Sifare, Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian as Farnace, Adriana Bignagni Lesca as Arbate, and Cyrille Dubois as Marzio.

It is absolute vocal perfection: technique, style, breath control, phrasing, dynamics and unique beauty of the superb voice. Mr. Spyres easily shows how the highest, just unattainable level of opera singing transformes in a true Art. Breathtaking! Real miracle. Bravo!

Mozart was not mean. The role of Mitridate was composed to showcase the abilities of Guglielmo d'Ettore, who specialised in wide leaps and high tessituræ. Mozart always composed his operatic roles for the specific talents of the singers in question. 'Mean' doesn't come into it t all.

@comment6864

to adequately compare him to Gedda you’d have to hear him in something intimate and delicate in expressivity and technical at the same time, because that’s the pinnacle Gedda reached to. Just saying..

@@ladyizolde4508 nope. not in a million years. ford and spyers are just ‘vocalists’. croft is the real ARTIST. The drama, the rhetoric, the interpretation 😍😍😍 This is what opera is all about - theater! Ford and Spyers are just park and bark.

It's the studio recording and the main goal of such projects is to demonstrate the beauty, style and in this way the soul of music. Check out Spyres's or Ford's live performances of Mitridate and you'll understand what I'm talking about. They create a real dramatic character and put emotions in their singing. Early Italian style of Mozart's operas of this period is a formal baroque opera seria which requiers firts of all ideal technique, breath control, vocal beauty. Virtuosity is the main goal of baroque singing. And honestly Croft is not the best in it.
@zauber620
@zauber620 2 жыл бұрын
@@ladyizolde4508 It does not matter what it is. Opera is first and foremost theater. As established by Monteverdi! (if you really wanna talk proper baroque). And trust me, I've seen the live recordings of both Ford and Spyers. It's still all vocal fireworks without much essence. Mozart is not using the baroque formula, but the galant one, which is quite different. And his focus is first and foremost on dramatic expression and rhetorical acting with the voice. This is exactly why Hasse said "This kid is going to render us (all other composers) obsolete" after hearing Mitridate. And this is why Mozart was never again invited to Italy after Lucio Silla. His dramatic demands were much too high for them. All they wanted was boring vocal pyrotechnics, which is what you, sadly, seem to want.
@ladyizolde4508
@ladyizolde4508 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the vocal component of the role dominates above all others. Emotinal expression must not destroy the perfection of vocal lines. Monteverdi is not Hasse and Hasse is not Mozart. Each composer works in some style paradigme connecting it with his one interpretation of emotional expression and stage dramaturgy. Alas, the presentation of opera first of all as a theatre ruins it today. Only music does matter. And I"ve listened to Spyres live as well. Ford and Croft in recordings only, they left stage befor I could listen to them, cause I'm 24. And Spyres not only virtupso singer, his is a good actot with very noble, truly regal emotional presence without cheap effects. Anyway, it is a matter of taste. For example, you just like the stage temperament of Croft and can exuse some of his vocal flaws. If I dont't like quality of singing and technique skills of some performer I don't care if he plays as an Oscar winner, I want him sing like an opera god. Because if I want visual effects i will go to the cinema or dramatic theatre. When I'm going to the opera, I want hear good singing first of all. And it is not primitive thinking, it is the difference between art genres. By the way, today almost all singers sing so terribly, that any choise between just good singer and good singer-actor is meaningless, there is no left neither. So I will prefer Spyres who really can sing than any voicless surrogate of opera singer. Even if he is the Oscar winner)
