It's not that they didn't know the lyrics. It's that they chickened out when the volume of Michael and the guitar went to zero. You can tell by how their voices went from singing "You" to nothing as they all started looking at each other with huge grins on their faces and shrugging (which no doubt happened, because it happens every time this sort of thing occurs).
