Greg Mathieson is playing keys. The song is an improvisation around a Lee Ritenour composition called Butterfly from his Earth Run album. Greg is a veteran player from the West Coast music scene, and that's the legend John "JR" Robinson on the drums

got2bharmony This is by Herbie Hancock not Lee.

correct. from the headhunters album "thrust".
@got2bharmony5 жыл бұрын
You are of course correct thanks for giving the rightful credit to Herbie. I was trying to suggest that Michael's opening was very much an improv of Lee Rit's version. As you see I'm still going back to this for a dose of inspiration. I love Michael's tone, effects and control, but it is JR's drums, bass and tasteful keys that make the overall sound so cool.

What a wonderful Jam. I sure wish Exotic-Guitars would share the Names of all these great musicians?, or perhaps its KZbin that no longer allows us see the Musician Credits? With every phone update, we lose our access to the democratic lifting of our Musicians. Why would they not allow you to know Everybody on the cut

I am almost certain that Michael Thompson is the other guitar player in a Butterfield clip where Buzzy fieten and Michael play. Michael plays the first solo which is one of the best solos on anything.....but there is no mention of him. Its got to be him.

This song was originally performed by Herbie Hancock, not Lee Ritenour, who did cover it on his 1986 Earth Run album
@got2bharmony8 жыл бұрын
+BadSneakers That is very true, but to me the opening style is very similar to that of Lee's and I suspect Michael was influenced by Lee's adaptation of the song. BTW, does anyone know who the bassist is hidden behind Greg M?
@paul38ford798 жыл бұрын
+got2bharmony It might be Abraham Laboriel. I've seen Greg Mathieson the keyboard player at the Baked Potato many times, sometimes Laboriel was playing with him. Not sure if this is the same show, but I did see Thompson there with Mathieson as well.

Look at the Baked Potato website, the calendar goes back years... From the website: NATIVE SON ALLSTAR FUNK-ROCK MICHAEL THOMPSON …(GUITAR) JOHN J.R. ROBINSON …(DRUMS) BOBBY WATSON …(BASS) GREG MATHESON …(KEYS) ROMEO JOHNSON …(VOCALS)

I really like Thomson a lot on many things. But for a tune like Butterfly, his improvisation is just a little to straight forward rock, imo. While I don't mind an interpretation with some rock energy, Butterfly is a song that lives of it's gorgeous harmonies. And in order to do it justice, I'd prefer a more fusion oriented player like Scott Henderson, John Scofield, Mike Stern, or Frank Gambale, to name but a few. If we'd stick to the 70s cats, then maybe Carlton, or Ford in his Yellowjackets days. But great playing, obviously.

nice relaxed backing track ,but I miss Mike Landau here ...Thomson isnt simply very well-known for his ingenious lead guitar playing...

dont get me wrong,Thomsons solo playing is great,but he has no real signature style like Lukather or Landau...its pretty mainstream

If you can get your hands on his first solo album "How Long"...hard to find, but I'm sure it will change your mind. IMO, one of the great guitar albums. A little taste... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHmtm3yefdOilZI
